Pennsylvania Wrestling: The Sanderson Effect
We're about a month away from the start of the wrestling season, where we'll get to see Penn State try to defend their Big Ten & National Championships against a much stronger 2011-2012 field. Win Magazine took a look at the culture of wrestling in the state of Pennsylvania and makes a loose case that the arrival of Cael Sanderson to the Head Coach position of the state's premier collegiate wrestling team has changed the goal mindsets of its High School wrestlers:
“High school wrestlers in Pennsylvania haven’t really had their eyes on college,” PA wrestling insider Corey Haddad said. “Their penultimate goal has always been gold in Hershey (site of the PIAA state tournament). Cael has quickly changed that. He re-energized kids to not only wrestle, but to be successful in post-secondary school. Now more than ever, kids want opportunities to compete in college.”
It's a short article, packed with .... not much beyond the assertion, but it could be a fun topic to consider for Pennsylvania wrestling fans.

Another link: article on Nebraska & Jordan Burroughs Head Coach
Manning, who returns just 11 of last year’s 43.5 NCAA points this winter, believes he has a team that will also soak up Burroughs’ success. "We have some good young men working their tails off," Manning said. "I’m excited about seeing Jordan move forward. I’m exciting about the young men in our program."
Annnd, another
Damn, just surfing through the reader I found lots of good updates from Win. This one is an interview with Dan Gable, where he discusses the state of American wrestling in the aftermath of our 3rd place team finish at the World Championships. The man spits gems:
I didn’t like the fact just because we struggled that we felt we had to start all over. I felt like there was so much emphasis on qualifying weights for the Olympics. When I was at the training camp, I saw signs posted that the No. 1 thing was to qualify your weight class. That should be on a much lower priority than winning gold medals. I didn’t go to high school simply with the goal of graduating from high school or I didn’t go to college just to get a diploma. That was an assumption. I didn’t question whether I was going to get my degree. If I go for a C, I’ll probably get a D. If I go for an A, I might get a C or I may get a B or higher. It’s all part of the mental development that has you at a higher level of expectation.
I love Cael
But I have to disagree with Corey Haddad here. Kids wrestling in college from PA has always been big. Where PA guys are going to school has always been a big topic in wrestling circles. Maybe it’s getting more appeal outside of the wrestling world now, but I don’t really think there will be an uptick of kids going to college because of Cael.
This is true, kids from all over Pa tried to go to college with wrestling. I remember a kid from Montgomery, Pa, opposing school from mine that was rumored to have scored a 450 on his SAT’s but he still was accepted and tried to go to school at Iowa or Iowa St. (late 70’s). I think he was back on the farm by spring but at least he tried. The best wrestlers from my high school all at least went to a PSAC school with Bloomsburg and Lock Haven nearby and a couple went to PSU. Distric IV was the grumpy back in the day and still produces some great talent.

This was my first time ever hearing of
‘PA wrestling insider Corey Haddad.’ Have you guys heard of him before?
not I, but then I am south central Pa. he could be from anywhere else.

after a brief google session
I have decided that if you wrestled in the early 2000’s, wrote one article for intermat and know someone from another wrestling source that makes you an “insider”. Actually, what the hell is a Pa wrestling insider? Pa wresting is huge and there are very few people who know the entire state. maybe a district or league, but the entire state, no.
insider? don’t even know her.

Good stuff
Yeah, it was a pretty flimsy article through and through. I agree with you, tho. The oldheads on FOS sure come with plenty of District Insider kennollege, but yeah, the state is huge and there are a boatload of HS programs.
Did you see that former PSU Director of Wrestling Operations & new Clarion Head Coach Matt Dernlan has lured PSU assistant coach Troy Letters to coach with him there now too? I haven’t see that Sanderson has replaced either yet.
I imagine, Cael will not lack for people wanting to coach with him.
I do go over to FOS to read the wrestling coverage and you can get a good bit of info. I guess Cael has more time to search for an assistant now, too.

Yeah, I like those guys there
You can tell most of them have a ton of watching experience, and some have access to the mat room and can share their stories, however many saltgrains you have to take em in with. And, most surprisingly, there’s very few jackholes. And the few that come round frequently get schooled pretty respectfully. I wish all that conversation was had here, tho, on this platform instead. I’d be way more interactive/inquisitive.
Yea that hire happened in the mid to late summer and then letters left a few weeks ago. Really happy to see Dernlan head elsewhere however that will be a huge loss for our program. More than a lot of people know.
Letters probably a good coach but I don’t know if he’s been around enough to say he’s had a huge impact.
Would be nice to see Cael bring in a few PA people to join the staff. And one of them we’ll likely need to be a lightweight coach.
Wrestling Season Tickets...
I was researching in hopes of making a few, but schedule isn’t working that way. Here’s what I found:
There are still some seats available (a few hundred maybe). NLC not required (doesn’t help).
If interested call Joel Diamond – 814-867-2557.
7 home matches includes 4 B1G (Iowa, Minnesota, OSU & Michigan) & three non-B1G (Pitt, West VA & Bloomsburg)
$42. Available Seats are West End Upper in Rec Hall.
Yo fumo español
I hope there are still single tickets available to matches.
my youngest grandson will be very disappointed if we don’t get to at least one match. He is wrestling this year for the elementary program, gonna be interesting. He is a bit of a character. My winter saturdays from hell with the 8 am starts, drives all over southcentral Pa and sitting in a gym for 4 or 5 hours so he gets 2 or 3 matches. Did it for my sons, now the grandson. Older grandson wrestled 2 yrs, pretty good but he wanted to play basketball.

I would be surprised if single match tickets aren’t available. And will also be really disappointed if they aren’t. Although I would say if they do become available act fast because matches like Iowa and Minnesota will likely go quick. I hope to at least make those two matches. Just too many friday matches for me to buy season tickets.
This was Illinois last year. I was able to take him to Lock Haven and this match.
Wish I had a camera at the Lock Haven match. we sat about 10 rows up mid mat and then Zayden got to meet Frank Molinaro (his favorite) and Ed Ruth afterwards.

Speaking of Ruth
Is the any word on the ramifications of his of season behavior?
Losing a game is heartbreaking. Losing your sense of excellence or worth is a tragedy.
Joe Paterno
Frankie Mo
In the article: " For the first time in years, there is a glimmer in PA wrestlers’ eyes watching and hoping to be the next Jordan Oliver, Frank Molinaro or Quentin Wright".
Frankie Mo is a Jersey Boy. I guess what was meant by the above sentence was……..something.
