BOB Watch: Patriots vs Broncos Open Thread

How many teams get to see their newly-hired head coach in action a week after getting the job. For those of you like me who aren't big NFL fans, we get to see just what kind of offense Bill O'Brien calls for New England. And for the rest of you, also like me, who previously had a less-than-amicable relationship with the Pats... well, let's suck it up and cheer for #PSUBOB.

Standard open thread rules. But especially today--for obvious OMLASJCTEBOW reasons--keep religion OUT of this thread. We will be watching, so think about your comments before posting them, please.

What’s your opinion: Pats lose so we can get BOB sooner, or win it all so he has a SB ring to wave in recruits’ faces?

Yeah, I'm learning the same way.

Pats are putting on a clinic tonight, and BOB will be able to claim some defensive cred: “My offensive guys executed really well, and it let the defense tee off. See how one squad supports the other? Come to Penn State, and enjoy the success!”

Yes, I like that sales pitch

As an Eagles fan still smarting from ‘04 who never much cared for the Pats prior, it’s been a bit tough for me to swallow rooting for them this post-season, but I’m buying to the Super Bowl ring as recruiting tool.

Down here, I only saw about half of the games that year.

Early in the conference season, I would see these scores roll across the bottom of the screen ticker: What is it? Late third quarter? And then something like 11:54, 1st Q would roll by.

Still, my favorite all-time Penn State offensive performance did not come from this team. Instead it was the Sacca-BYU Holiday Bowl.

This was the year that I learned that Joe wasn't the 79' Sugar Bowl predictable Joe I had thought.

The Holiday Bowl prepared me for the NFL offense of 94. Specifically, the over-the-top throws down field at an increased frequency. Something about the Lions’ offense in 94 reminds me still of the 79 and 80 Steeler teams. Here comes Franco. Here comes Rocky. Oops, you forgot about Stallworth/Swann on the fly. Kijana is Franco and Rocky. Engram and Scott are Stallworth and Swann. And I guess Brady is Bennie Cunningham. Hartings as Webster really resonates for me.

And I forgot the most important part:

Kerry is Terry. They have a bunch of the same attitude. Plus, they have both recorded country music. Bradshaw put out a album of covers that we all owned for camp value alone. It was the sort of thing that was played at excessive volume at two or three am.

The reason for the hoodie...

Belicheck feels as though all coaches should wear suits, but the NFL requires coaches to wear Reebok gear with their team on it. Therefore, he makes his stuff look ridiculous to spite the NFL.

It was dependent on reebok developing a line of suits that would end up being available for sale to the public. Reebok made them, did marketing testing, and killed the project, so no suits for coaches.

psuwxman and I have been having this discussion on Twitter

I believe that unless Morningwheg is a stud next year or PJ finally get his head on straight, the genius of the Bill O’Brien offense won’t be felt until 2013 when a competent QB can run it. 2012 will be meh unless there is a QB who can get the ball to playmakers.

Part of that discussion hinges on Bolden, as well.

by psuwxman on Jan 14, 2012 9:02 PM EST up reply actions

disagree

according to BOB, he’s not going to run this specific offense he runs with the Pats. His “gameplan” offense takes into account the skills of the players involved as well as the opposing defenses. I suspect next year will still be run heavy, and in the future it will depend on what talent we have. Perhaps at some point it looks like the Pats current system, but not anytime soon. I’m also not saying it will/wont be effective next year as the QB is still an issue, but if we have a good running QB I would imagine he would use that, or switch to a pass heavy scheme with a dropback qb.

that under new tutelage, Mac’s more ill-advised tendancies could be mimimized a bit more than what appears to be lack of self confidence with RB.

My pure guess is that if PJ gets all things academic under control, and can compete in the spring, B/W game and in the late summer practices – he’d get the nod.

He was shown up again and again

by Major Applewhite. Simms looked like a stud on paper, but Major was the scrapper who won big games. If you needed a guy to hang 40 on Baylor or Kansas, Simms was your guy. Now beating Nebraska or Oklahoma by 3? Not so much. That’s why they simply couldn’t keep Applewhite on the bench; he was the better option.

Irony is like tragedy.

I frequently hear stories on local TV such as “four children between the ages of two and 10 were tragic victims of a fiery crash on I-10 in St. James Parish last night.”

These kids had a fatal flaw that resulted in them bringing about their own demise?

No.

This is why I usually have the sound off.

Just hoping to hear some BOB/PSU crumbs, but these guys are tough to listen to. Another quarter of bilge to listen to . . . .

One more Pat's score and...

You should be hearing a lot of non-game blather from these announcers. Looks like Denver’s defense has quit for the night already.

So with the game very much decided...

Anybody drinking anything good tonight? I’m personally going with some Christmas Ale from Bells Brewery in Michigan. They make some damn fine beers.

Oberon

and their IPA are my favorites. I do wish you could get the Oberon year round.

I just blew up...

Two bottles of Malbec and at an 18 ounce dry aged Ribye.

Yeah.

I make a bad ass steak, but this was a beautiful piece of meat. A playboy bunny in my decidedly Larry Flint kitchen.

I went much less classy

than the steak and wine and went with beer and chili. I think I’d gladly trade for the dry aged ribeye.

by James on Jan 14, 2012 11:43 PM EST up reply actions

The meat was a present from my Wife.

Medium Rare (although I missed it by a few degrees toward medium, which is actually how I like it, but I digress), seasoned with sea salt and crushed black pepper corns. Took the Au Jus, and cut it with a bit of A-1 and a big assed baked potato.

Ate it off a wood cutting board. And if you’ve never ate a bad ass steak on a wood cutting board, well, that’s the way to do it.

Indulge an old guy for a second.

One of the most influential things I ever heard in my life….

Me and buddy were kids, like 21, in college, and we were at the distributor with his Dad. He asked for a case of beer and the guy said they had it, but it was $50 (gasp) a case. His response; “I didn’t go to graduate school so I could worry about the price of a case of beer”.

In it’s way, it was high motivational.

by jesse. on Jan 15, 2012 12:13 AM EST up reply actions

That is motivational.

Although I only have to deal with pollock food for 4 more months. Then its off to the real world. Its bittersweet. It’s gonna be nice to have a real income thats for sure. But it will suck not getting to be here all the time.

I chopped up a chiltepin pepper fromthe bush I've got out back

and folded it into about a half cup of that chili dog sauce recipe Mel put up last year — it was frozen. After adding some finely chopped onion, wrapping the prepped dogs in foil to steam (Italian sausage style), and finishing with some mustard, I had one of my favorite meals. The chiltepin gave it the most wonderfully warm heat. Hot; not bitter.

So I guess I’m eating Big Butts food in a Larry Flint kitchen.

Did you grow Tepins?

I did too.

They were good. Stinkin’ hot for their size. But the bush was too big for my garden against the yield of peppers. I just killed the last of my fresh ghost chilies in a Chicago Pizza yesterday. They are pretty much an irreplaceable ingredient. Dried powdered GC’s are nearly $25 an ounce.

And I’ve had to cook for Mel, so…something.

Yeah,

I’ve got a bush I put on the back fence line — it’s not in the garden with the rest of the pepper plants. But, all of these things thrive down here. Hard freeze?, Fuck You Hard Freeze. They are wonderful.

The Bhut is the bitchiest plant I've ever owned.

But that fucker is in a pot in front of a window. Alive. My Wife has cats, and I have plants. I had a Basil plant named Daryl Clark, which was a legend, but eventually he died.

We've had the same Basil plant since just past Katrina/Rita.

In this climate, basil is almost virulent — it replicates as a zombie. Our coldest day of the year is usually something like three consecutive days with six hours overnight of 29.

I desperately need a hard freeze. The mosquitoes require at least token resistance. I’m out of chemicals. It’s January for Christ’s sake.

that's what I had last night

They were $2 domestic drafts…but Yeungling wasn’t on the list. When I questioned the waitress about its, she said that everyone asked why that was but I didn’t press her.

They should have a disclaimer: “$2 domestic drafts!!* *except for the beer you know you all want”

with something like Michelob Amber Bock. And another time with LaBatts, which while technically is an import, seemed weak to me.

Alright

I have might been drinking, so I am not oging ot read all these comments, since I can’t consentrate on them corretly.

Do we like Bob more or less? And yeah we need a better nickname for him. We go from a strong, JoePa, to bob, just not doing it for me.

My take is that the pats really gamplaned for the broncos’ and knew exactly how to attack their weaknesses, something i hope we can do next year, especially against OSU, screw them, i want to drop another 63 on them suns of biactchs.

BOB it is! not bobbitt....nor bobsled...not BYOB...nor billybob...etc., et al...

Looking east from deep in my coyote den in the mtns. of cowboy land, appears all is well in lionland…Praise be to BOB! And…according to wordsmiths the world over, the established nickname for Bill O’Brien is BOB, soon to be chronicled as such by the 2012 edition, Oxford Acronyms for Proper Nouns (OAPN).

But can we still say that we're "riding the BOBsled"?

…when we start pummeling our opponents? I just like the imagery there.

Anybody else notice who took the photo above? Really, we’re all the Sandusky’s busy?

Any chance we get a transfer QB, like Wisconsin did last year?

I hope high school TEs are watching the Pats, Coach Billy O should get a couple of TEs every year…..

I'm glad Jesse James,

2012 TE recruit, is already enrolled, but wouldn’t mind adding another TE to this year’s batch.
