Wrestling Wreport: PSU sweeps Northwestern and Wisconsin

Frank the Tank didn't give up a point this weekend.

Penn State took on two Big Ten teams on the road this weekend and destroyed both of them. The Lions beat Northwestern 38-3 Friday night and then shut out Wisconsin 43-0 Sunday afternoon. It was Penn State’s first dual shutout in their Big Ten history and the first time Wisconsin was shut out in over half a century. Penn State’s only loss on the weekend was a close 2-1 bout between Dylan Alton and #3 Jason Welsh of Northwestern. The numbers are just plain crazy, as a team, Penn State gave up just 6 takedowns combined, while amassing 53. The Nittany Lions had 4 pins, 3 tech falls, 3 major decisions and one bout end on injury default. Penn State combined for 24 bonus points.

Star-divide

#17 Northwestern

Wt Winner dec. Loser Bout Score Team Score
125: # 10 Nico Megaludis PSU dec #7 Levin Mele NU 7-3 3-0
133: Frank Martellotti PSU dec Jameson Oster NU 10-4 6-0
141: Bryan Pearsall PSU inj. def. Colin Shober NU Inj. Def.; 3:18 12-0
149: #1 Frank Molinaro PSU maj. dec. Kaleb Friedley NU 10-0 16-0
157: #3 Jason Welsh NU dec #9 Dylan Alton PSU 2-1 16-3
165: #1 David Taylor PSU tech fall Pierce Harger NU 20-5 (TF; 7:00) 21-3
174: #2 Ed Ruth PSU tech fall #9 Lee Munster NU 18-3 (TF; 5:37) 26-3
184: #3 Quentin Wright PSU pinned Marcus Shrewsbury NU WBF (2:41) 32-3
197: #13 Morgan McIntosh PSU dec John Schoen NU 6-4 35-3
285: #6 Cameron Wade PSU dec #19 Mike McMullan NU 6-3 38-3

Megaludis served notice that he belongs ranked in the top 10. Nico shot early and often against Mele, forced a stall warning, and converted on several attempts. Megaludis continues to get better as the season unfolds. Alton’s tough loss can be chalked up to inexperience. Like his brother last season, Dylan is not on par with the top guys when it comes to mat work. Neither wrestler got a takedown, a 3rd period riding time point for Welsh was the difference. Alton needs to work on getting out from the bottom position.

Wisconsin

Wt Winner dec. Loser Bout Score Team Score
125: # 10 Nico Megaludis PSU pinned Austin Hietpas UW WBF (6:05) 6-0
133: Frank Martellotti PSU maj. dec Shane McQuade UW 14-6 10-0
141: Bryan Pearsall PSU dec Thomas Glenn UW 4-2 13-0
149: #1 Frank Molinaro PSU maj. dec #9 Cole Schmitt UW 12-0 17-0
157: #9 Dylan Alton PSU dec Shawn Perry UW 11-4 20-0

184: #3 Quentin Wright PSU pinned Timmy McCall UW WBF (6:05) 37-0
197: #13 Morgan McIntosh PSU dec Jackson Hein UW 7-3 40-0
285: #6 Cameron Wade PSU dec Cole Tobin UW 6-4 43-0

Martellotti is slowly getting back to form after being out of the lineup for so long. Molinaro is so tough on top that he didn’t give up a point all weekend long. With Molinaro up 4-0 going into the third period, Schmitt chose down to start the third and was dominated. Molinaro turned Schmitt several times and turned a close match into a 12-0 whitewash. Murder’s row of Taylor, Ruth, and Wright were at it again accounting for 3 pins and 3 tech falls. If you wrestle Penn State and you’re not up when 157 comes around, you’re in trouble.

The other true freshman Morgan McIntosh seems to be a little off. Clay Steadman who was working color commentator for Jeff Byers suggested that perhaps McIntosh doesn’t have the confidence yet. Morgan has proven he can hang with the big boys he just needs to take the next step and start dominating unranked wrestlers.

Another weekend of wrestling and another head scratcher for Cameron Wade. Wade beat a ranked wrestler but almost lost to Cole Tobin who barely had a winning record (6-5). In fact, Wade had to milk a 6-4 3rd period lead and had a stall call against him. That bout was way too close for comfort.

Penn State now returns home for the huge home dual against Iowa Sunday at 2 pm. The match is sold out and should be a great one. If you can’t get excited about wrestling Iowa at home, you need to check your pulse.

Three of Wisconsin's best are shooting for the Olympics...

Andrew Howe, Tyler Graff, and Travis Rutt are all gone, so Wisconsin is a LOT weaker than it was last year on the mat.

No doubt

Penn State had the same problem when Cael took over, his first year he redshirted Ruth & Wright, so we know your pain.

But will they all come back

After the departure of Asst Coach Pritzlaff?

I’m worried about Barry Davis.

Molinaro has an incredible 10 shutouts this year. amazing

it has been noted that he dead lifts 550 lbs. he weighs less than 149.

I just read.

I couldn't believe Schmitt took down to start the 3rd

I mean he was losing 4-0 but give yourself a chance. If he chooses neutral he at least has a shot, taking bottom was the end for him.

If I'm BO'B

When I hit town permanently I could do worse things than become fast friends with Cael.

I thought the same thing

This is Bill’s first run at a head coaching position. He should sit down with Cael and pick his brain about handling 18-year old student athletes.

I'd add Russ Rose to that list

And a few other coaches. Penn State really does have an amazing coaching staff in the “olympic” sports.

by psuwresfan on Jan 17, 2012 8:29 AM EST up reply actions

Not to take ANYTHING away from Russ Rose

but isn’t he a tad of a laid-back kind of coach? Cael is similar to JoePa with his rules, just like Joe, if a meeting is at 10:00 AM you are there at 9:45. Again, I’m not taking anything away from the incredible career of Russ Rose.

by Galen on Jan 17, 2012 9:12 AM EST up reply actions

He's laid back somewhat

But as far as a disciplinarian no he’s from the JoePa mold from what I understand. And like Joe the way I understand he’s not shy about telling his players they need to get it together.

My impression of Rose is that he's huge into data analysis

Which may have come into play if indeed he had any role on the football search committee.

I’d love to learn if Rose & BoB have already met or not.

Great summary, Galen!

Thanks! It’s good to hear positive things that don’t involve drama.

"Make haste to reassure us, I beg you, and tell us that our fellow citizens understand us, support us, and protect us as we ourselves are protecting the glory of the Empire.

Wade and McIntosh have me worried

I see this weekend’s match coming down to those two bouts and while both should be favored neither is instilling much confidence in me at this point.

And looking further down the road, Penn State will need both two do well at Big Ten’s and NCAAs if they’re going to win it.

by psuwresfan on Jan 17, 2012 8:31 AM EST reply actions

This weekend

Penn State MUST have at least a split at 197/HWT. They can not afford to lose both, either Morgan or Wade have to come up big.

by Galen on Jan 17, 2012 9:13 AM EST up reply actions

That being said

Seems like many in the Iowa circles are not at all happy about the way the Gambrall and Telford are wrestling now either. Should be really interesting.

I think the key to the bout is bonus points. Iowa doesn’t typically give up many, they always find a way to limit the damage. Penn State will need to the do the same, anything worse than a 12 0 hole from 125 – 141 could destroy Penn State.

Iowa then wrestled NW on Sunday, and won 24-13

Their match began at HWT, so the bout by bout Team Scores don’t sync up so much, but here are the comparative results. PSU took 3 wins over NW that Iowa did not: at 149, 197 & HWT. Not sure if it was due to being mauled by Ruth on Friday or just improvement by Iowa, but Munster lost again on Sunday to Lofthouse, who he beat rather solidly in the Midlands finals a few weeks ago.

Would really like to see 125-141 not be worse than 13-0

for security, but I really think PSU can sweep the rest.
149 +4
157 +3
165 +4
174 +5 Ruth is wrestling fantastic right now
184 +4 hoping for 6
197 +3 Gambrall is defensive, MM needs to be patient
HWT +3 Wade seems to be doing just enough but Telford is an odd matchup for him
26-13 I reallly doubt it will be this decisive but you never know. I feel much better this year than last especially with the way Ruth and Wright are going right now.

I just read.

They're definitely superior to us at all three of those weights

But bonus isn’t gonna come so easy to them there. Stylistically, if not in talent or experience, we match up pretty decent with them. McD’s the most likely pinner of those three, but Nico would have to get caught real good for him to let that happen. Remember how it looked like Perrelli had him dead to rights and Nico fought it off. Plus, both guys are notable for their length & huge gas tanks. Obvs, McD’s got way more experience and Nico’s TD defense still needs work, but preventing bonus is gonna be very important to him.

Ramos & Martellotti are both aggressive attackers. Martellotti is pretty rusty still, but he’s gonna keep bringin the offensive attempts. Not sure what his tank is yet, and Ramos’ is pretty strong, so that may factor in. And Martellotti was once pretty good at riding, tho he didn’t show that on Fri night. So not really sure what to expect out of him yet, but he’s got enough talent to prevent a TF; we’ll see about a Major.

Until Sunday, Marion hasn’t been dominating much. And he’s shown he’s capable of being frustrated. I think he’s still one of the best-conditioned wrestlers in the country right now, but skill-wise, he’s still far superior to Pearsall. I’m wondering if Pearsall will be able to ride him and buy some time? I could see a Major or Tech, here, tho, if Marion decides to bring it.

I like the rest of those scores, tho ;)

Tank NEEDS to get a major. I wanna see him make good scoring decisions, unlike in the dual last year. 7-pt wins suck. And his opponent has gone 1-3 in his last four.

I’ve seen some assertions that Derek St. John, the #4 finisher last year in DT’s weight, will return to action from injury. He’s ranked #2 this year behind Dake. In 3 losses to Taylor last year, he gave up quite a few takedowns, but improved from start to finish. In the dual, he got majored 12-4, in the Big Ten final, it was 8-3. In the National quarterfinals, it was only 6-3. He got mauled by Fittery in the 3rd place match 13-1, so there is a track record out there that he can be scored upon. And Dylan’s got some real good shots. And DSJ hasn’t competed since 12/8, so who knows what might happen there. If he doesn’t go, tho, that +3 you’ve got for Dylan very much should stick.

I like DT’s edge this year: that the team may need pins instead of tech falls. Rec Hall could go crazy if he starts out that part of our lineup with a big score.

Man, I wish I had seen that Ruth-Munster match from Friday. Byers was going crazy. Sounds like the staff is finding the right mix of motivational coaching for Eddie for him to come out and want to dominate like that.

Q needs a pin. Wagner’s job is to avoid it.

I feel bad for Gambrall, like I do for anybody recovering from head injury. He looks lost out there at 197. Looks very unripped as well, as you might expect wrestling up a weight and being prohibited from weight-cutting techniques. Size-wise, tho, Morgan’s not one of the 197 horses either, so I wanna see some speed and technique from him on Sunday.

Heavyweights. Sigh.

All in all, it’s certainly possible that we get outwrestled like we did last year. It’s Iowa. They’ll come in and wrestle tough. But even if we do, I like how this team is improving & looking as we get closer to March.

Good stuff guys

I’m sayin’ the black hearted bastards will be up 12-0 after the first 3 weights. Nico and Martellotti should avoid giving up big bonus pts. Then:

Frank wins big, at least 5 pts.
DSJ returns and gets a slim dec.
DT, Ruth and Q get 16 pts between them. (Yes jtot, Q wins by fall)
MM and Wade wrestle with the dual pretty much in hand and each win by dec.

Final 27-15

Of course, I thought we were going to beat them last year as well.

Applied scouting

by Iowa against PSU last year was obvious. Against Nebraska last week, Iowa did better than they should have on paper (again, scouting as well as determination). I’ll be watching to see how Iowa tries to neutralize each wrestler’s style.

I sure hope the officials assigned to this match are up to the challenge (a pin is a pin is a pin).

It seemed to me that against Nebraska several Iowa wrestlers immediately went for a takedown as soon as they escaped. I’ll be looking to see how that tendency plays out against PSU.

Man, that was an interesting match, wasn't it?

The Iowa Nebraska match from Fri night. Nebby’s got some very interesting young talent. That 157 pounder, James Green, looks like a Jordan Burroughs clone, albeit TRFR raw. I also liked that dude Sueflohn, who Marion was up against at 141. He was all kinds of beat up (gauze in both nostrils, before taking an elbow to the eye and getting his head wrapped). But I was bummed at the performance of their then-#3-ranked 165 pounder, Robert Kokesh. I’ve been hearing about him for a few years now and Mike Evans was in control the whole time.

Fun match to watch, tho, with Penn State facing off against both teams in the next few weeks.

DT and Evans will be fun to watch

I’ve watched Evans since elementary school, as he and Sam were the same weight til their junior years and Evans jumped up to 171.

I just read.

Hey, Bman!

Sorry I’ve been out of touch…yeah, I’ve been reading about him for years, but Fri vs. Nebby is the first I’ve seen him. He’s got a few attributes that make him easy to hate as a rival and he def still looks RSFR unpolished. But he’s long, to borrow from Jay Bilas. And he looks like a spider on top. Had a few decent shots from neutral, one from a nice angle that he had set up. Will def be fun to watch him against the Unicorn.

On McIntosh
The other true freshman Morgan McIntosh seems to be a little off. Clay Steadman who was working color commentator for Jeff Byers suggested that perhaps McIntosh doesn’t have the confidence yet. Morgan has proven he can hang with the big boys he just needs to take the next step and start dominating unranked wrestlers.

Yeah, it does sound like confidence is the issue for the true freshman. Sanderson’s quote after the NLO about him started out ‘if Morgan stays real confident…’ but it ended with ‘he could be a national champion this year.’ (emphasis mine). I can’t even imagine how difficult that HS-to-college transition is, even for a dude with as much national HS experience as Morgan had. But it’s definitely in play. He was a few seconds away from wins over #3 Powless (the Byers call sounds like it was a ripoff anyway) and #6 Yohn, both Seniors. This dude, Schoen, is ranked #21 in Gregg Henry’s rankings (Intermat only goes to 20) and he’s a 5th year SR too. What, 4-5 years older than Morgan? Byers said that match got pretty heated, something like ’it’s clear these two have developed a distaste for each other.’ And Morgan pulled out the victory.

I’d guess dominating isn’t gonna come for him quite this year, but I’ll be very happy with a top-4 finish at B1Gs and 1 or 2 wins in the championship bracket followed by a decent run through the consis (4-9 pts) at Nationals.
