"Get Started" Penn State Football 2012 Hype Video

Here's the new "hype" video from Penn State. I'm interested in seeing what everyone thinks. I'll share my thoughts after the jump

Star-divide

I find this video very unsettling. O'Brien says the right things and I respect him, but it's clear that he doesn't drive the message. Am I supposed to trust the workings of the hapless imbeciles who have made a terrible situation even worse and reduced a legend to an impotent puppet? Why should I expect any different from them now? Why should the new guy have any more control or power over such affairs than the incorrectly-heralded "Most powerful man in Pennsylvania?"

Those of you who have been around these parts for a while know that I'm the eternal optimist when it comes to Penn State football. For goodness's sake, I think that with a little work Rob Bolden can win the Heisman. But I absolutely do not feel comfortable with the program in the hands of the current BOT, Erickson, Joyner, and the rest of the men and women who have proven nothing to me over the last two and a half months except how immensely their concept of "We Are Penn State" differs from mine.

I'm sure this is somewhat of an overreaction, but this is a portion of reality that I wasn't quite ready to face and I can't say that I'm entirely confident that the future is as bright as this video suggests.

What are your thoughts, feelings, emotions? I figure either someone out there is going to cheer me up or we can all mope together. After all, Dr. Erickson assures me that we're all in this together. With that in mind, and all the confidence it gives me, I guess I can let out a hearty--

...We are...?

I know there isn't really any other way that PSU can spin this right now

but I think the complete neglect of Paterno speaks volumes. I said that O’Brien needed to do 2 things to earn the respect of Penn Staters— speak well of Paterno and attempt to keep Larry Johnson on staff. He did what was required and I feel it was genuine.

But from the administration, I see them still trying to distance themselves as far away from Paterno as humanly possible. It wouldn’t surprise me if they’re hiding something, but the idea of a “new” age of Penn State football is already mindblowing enough. What new age? It’s Penn State football! Same uniforms, same shoes, no names on the back of the jersey, hard-nosed defense, linebacker U football. I know they referenced that in the video, but the only person who seems willing to talk about Penn State football’s link to the past is O’Brien himself. Everyone else just seems scared.

I found it funny

that Erickson is featured so prominently in a football video. I also found it funny how our “new era” video featured the JoePa “you never stay the same” quote.

That being said, it did get me excited for next year. Nothing will compare to the Gladiator video, though.

I think he's done a great job here so far. I really do respect him.

But in a lot of places, the head football coach is viewed as the head of the program. He gets to say “This is the future of our program,” or “This is what this program will hold important.” I used to think that Joe had that kind of power, but if he did, it’s clear to me now that it was very indirect.

It just seems to me like O’Brien is a puppet, placed there by the administration who are trying to hide behind propaganda. Like they did with Joe, they want all the power, but none of the consequences. Their message is one of distance, one of cowardice. It’s not about Penn State. In my opinion, to refuse to embrace the past is to reject Penn State as a whole.

"O’Brien is a puppet"

it’s not far fetched that the search committee was looking for a coach they could push around. I think if BOB is successful he will have the same influence over time. I can’t say anything bad about the guy right now.

Why does it need to be about the coach?

This does nothing to excite me. Why not portray our strengths instead of our uncertainties. Words mean nothing without actions to back them up. It’s great that O’Brien is saying the right things, but that’s pretty easy to do, especially with prepared statements. Until we see his actions, the words are hollow.

Why couldn’t this be a video about the successful players we’ve had and continue to produce? Include LJ Sr. or Vandy, maybe even have a Heisman candidacy innuendo for Redd? It bothers me that this video is supposed to be about the new era in Penn State, about the continuation of our tradition, and yet the most predominant figure in it is the greatest uncertainty to both. I truly hope O’Brien is successful, and I give him all the support I can. Stop trying to sell me on the guy, and lets let his actions start speaking for themselves.

Video made me sad.

There is no good way to handle this, but the video just made me sad. I especially did not like seeing “the big uglies” without Paterno. I am not surprised, or disappointed, but just profoundly sad.

by dontcallmescooter on Jan 17, 2012 4:18 PM EST reply actions

Once again, it seems like action was taken when it wasn't necessary.

I agree that there’s no good way to handle it, but why is it necessary now? It just kind of seems forced. Why not wait another month or 2, maybe get more soundbites to use, maybe get more story lines to promote? I don’t feel like this video said anything other than “A new era begins”, which is fine, but you don’t need 2 minutes to state it.

I agree.

And maybe it is just the era, but I am not sure we need a “pump up” video for this year. If the football team takes a dip this year, let it take a dip and build back organically. This seems forced.

I personally think it was a bad quote to use.

If it was intended as a tip of the hat, fine, but it’s still not fitting. There is nothing innately positive about that quote. There’s no context that really supports we will be getting better instead of getting worse. They might as well have said “Results Guaranteed!”

Would you have preferred a 2 minute Joe Paterno highlight reel?

I don’t really understand your frustration. This is a 120 second video stating that we’re ready to move on. Nothing more, nothing less.

I think the Joe tributes will come. In time.

I didn’t really take away that they were trying to portray “new and improved”. I can see how one would though.

Watched it a couple days ago.

Felt nothing good whatsoever. I’m pretty sure I’m jaded now, and anything that is produced and distributed by the university or athletic department simply rings hollow. And to be honest, smacks of propaganda. I don’t think anything in these videos has significantly changed; in fact I’m pretty sure they’ve been propaganda all along. It is just that my head is screwed on differently now.

Ehhh. It's okay.

Not much else to work with in terms of video/audio, and I guess PSU decided that public outrage had sufficiently died down and it was time to start a season ticket campaign.

Still can’t wait to see how this affects renewals. Most of the people who said they’d never renew their tickets seem to have come around rather quickly.

I said this on Twitter but not on here

It wasn’t the ends that bothered me, it was the means. I wouldn’t have cared if we landed Les Miles or zombie Vince Lombardi, the ends don’t justify the means. Wait...there was a coach before BOB???

This message has nothing negative to say about BOB, I am willing to give the guy a fighting chance, but how long do we have to pretend as a University that JVP didn’t exist? From videos at the Nebraska game where he was removed (I only recall seeing one shot of his shoes during the whole game) to not even mentioning his name after his own quote in this video.

Why do we have to cut ties with his memory from a PR standpoint or a video standpoint? One more thing we are doing to satisfy the media/public opinion. We are (the admin of PSU) once again telling the world that we agree JVP needed to be punished and look at us, we are already moving on and forgetting about the last 60 years!

Sorry for the rant, but I am so sick of the BoT or the Admin putting out messages and taking action that makes the world’s largest alumni base in the world look bad. If the admin wants to apologize and cower to the media and the public, go ahead, but I for one do not. I can’t wait to wear my JVP t-shirts all spring/summer long. I’m still proud of what that man did for my University and I’m sick of being told to hide that pride by our so called leaders.

Joseph Vincent Paterno may not be the BOT's head coach, but he is still MY Head Coach!

by wek5000lion09 on Jan 18, 2012 7:52 AM EST reply actions

Hang on a second.

The JVP IP rights were held by a company that had a joint agreement with PSU. In the best interest of JVP and his family they had to part ways when he was relieved of his coaching duties. At that time, PSU had to remove all his image and likeness in order to not get sued by the licensing company that owns the rights to his image, correct?

Possibility now, not Nov 12, right?

I could see that being the case now, but I don’t believe that happened immediately. I could be wrong, but I thought the announcement on the sale of items with JVP’s likeness, etc occurred after the Nebraska game.

If that is the reason for not mentioning his name in videos since that announcement, I can live with that. To me, it just seems like mentioning Paterno was some taboo thing around our admin, Board, and other PSU people. It was almost surprising to hear people associated with PSU say his name to media outlets, etc. Maybe it is just me still being sour about the whole situation, certainly wouldn’t be the first time since Nov 9 I’ve been irrationally pissy about something!

Joseph Vincent Paterno. That is all.

by wek5000lion09 on Jan 19, 2012 7:24 AM EST up reply actions

When they did the senior videos thing

Where they show the pump -up videos from the last four years, Joe was not removed from any of them? Were you at the game? That was pretty hard to miss. The crowd went nuts every time he was onscreen, which was quite a bit during those videos.

by PSUMark2008 on Jan 19, 2012 4:00 PM EST up reply actions

I think we'll see more nods to Joe the further we get from November 2011.

Right now, the media is still in attack mode about this situation. Even though the talking points are played out and mostly off the air, every time anything happens at PSU there’s some sort of coverage, and it’s usually negative. If we tried to feature a video that included shots of Joe Paterno, we’re still going to be labeled as blue kool-aid cultists who still don’t get it. Whether you like it or not, this affects PSU’s wallet in a number of ways. There are still a number of fans/alumni who buy every word the media feeds them, and continuous negative publicity will drive advertisers away.

In a few years I guarantee they’ll start bringing Joe back into things like this, but for now we pretty much have to be patient and understand that it’s simply not appropriate to plaster Joe’s face everywhere. Let’s also not forget that Joe basically said “eff you” to the university and cut licensing ties. Isn’t it entirely possible that the university simply can’t feature Joe’s likeness?

by dbl5030 on Jan 18, 2012 9:01 AM EST reply actions

Then again.

Given the agreement to not use Joe’s likeness on any merchandise, etc., right now, perhaps that also extends to promotional videos and such. Who knows.

by Chris Grovich on Jan 18, 2012 2:15 PM EST up reply actions

Woops,

didn’t see this when I posted above.

I think it’s more complicated by his illness than anything else. They need to negotiate parameters and compensation for use of his likeness. Probably seems like a pretty crass request (negotiate payment for use of his image) to his family while he is undergoing treatment.

by PSUinBOSSton on Jan 18, 2012 9:28 PM EST up reply actions

Let's step back just a little

and be purely cynical about this: If BOB is truly a BoT/administration puppet, he is likely to get flushed out when WE, the true Penn Staters, overhaul the BoT (who in turn will overhaul the administration, faux coaches, et al.)

On the other hand, maybe he is being subversive, showing deference to JointSmoker/Lackey until he gets a couple great football seasons, and us, behind him. Then he starts to establish his independence, and can tell the bogus leadership to pound sound.

Keep in mind, Erickson is on record as saying he is retiring in 2014; we need to influence the BoT by then, so as to have a strong say in who the next prez is. That person in turn can kick Joyner to the curb, or at least clip his wings so the HFC has autonomy.

Think of this as, worst case, an interregnum — the time when the throne is vacant, between two successive regimes. Worst case, we suffer through BOB for a few years until we can once again attract a “name” coach.

"Make haste to reassure us, I beg you, and tell us that our fellow citizens understand us, support us, and protect us as we ourselves are protecting the glory of the Empire.

by PSU_Lions_84 on Jan 18, 2012 8:04 PM EST reply actions

I'm actually a little uncomfortable with having a HFC who has too much autonomy...

Just as I am uncomfortable with a BOT and President that are the same administration that dropped the ball on responding to this crisis continuing to lead the University.

I see no reason the BOT and/or President having a very real say in how the football program is handled is a bad thing unless the BOT and President are incompetent. At the current time I believe they are and I believe their motivations are more self-preservation than PSU-preservation. Therefore, I think it a bad thing if BOB is in their pocket. Nonetheless, you can bet your ass that BOB had to say the right things to get that job, and you’d be a fool to think a lot of those things weren’t related to bending to the will of the administration.

That said, it doesn’t mean BOB is going to be a bad coach. It just means he understands the situation and that you have to somewhat play the game in order to get anywhere in life. When I’m on the job market there’s a lot of things I do to my appearance and that I say to certain potential employers are based on what I think they want to see/hear. Only a fool would ignore those things… and I don’t want a fool for a head coach.

by BNittsDeMilo on Jan 19, 2012 9:45 AM EST up reply actions

I don't want a coach with autonomy either

But I would prefer an administration / athletic department with enough self-awareness and integrity to be able to admit fault and accept the whole program, everything that it has stood for, and everyone who made it so without looking like cowards.

unless the BOT and President are incompetent

That’s a mighty big “unless” considering what we just went through.

My buddy who was a Duke undergrad, Duke JD, and who has worked here his entire career (now in mid-50’s) said that Duke has thrived when either the Board prez or school prez has been strong and the other weak. When both are strong — contention; when both are weak — ineffectiveness.

In our case, when both the Board and prez are weak, I would like to have a HFC who is strong, as he represents the marquee sport (which in turn generates the most publicity for the institution).

Personal opinion, of course.

When Erickson started speaking

I wanted to vomit. Not because of what he was saying, but because it’s Erickson. In a football video.

I think a much better way to couch this – for the fans – would be saying something like “the tradition carries on” rather than “the dawn of a new era.” Everyone knows Paterno’s gone. Stop trying to make us celebrate it. The thing to celebrate, right now, i continuity and the fact that we are still Penn State.

by PSUMark2008 on Jan 19, 2012 4:00 PM EST reply actions

I can never understand the reasoning

of PR people. Do they think that because the left Paterno out (which is despicable) that the media will see this thing in a different light? Isn’t that sort of video to play to your base? Let me assure the PRers that the people that will watch that video and fill that stadium next year SUPPORT JOE PATERNO, at least the vast, vast majority. To omit him is disgraceful, but expected by cowards. To me, you keep the home team happy first.

This BOT is making it very difficult for me to buy tickets and support the school. Very difficult.

When you put those black shoes on tomorrow, and you put on that jersey without your name on the back, and you put that plain helmet on, that's tradition. Penn State tradition!
