Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

For the Glory...

It seems that everyone forgot, but Penn State is currently competing in several sports right now, and making some pretty big waves as well. Last weekend the Nittany Lions held their annual Nittany Lion Challenge. In his first ever individual appearance in a Penn State uniform, Robby Creese set several records. Robby, competing in the 1000 meters broke 3 records in this event. With a time of 2:19.53, this was good enough to unseat the former Penn State record of 2:19.60 set by Ryan Foster in 2010. It also was good enough for an American Junior record, which was previously set in 2001 by Alan Webb. The time also set the NCAA record, previously held by 2008 Olympian, and former K-Stater, Christian Smith which was set in 2006. Not surprising, Creese was awarded the Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week for his performance.

Within the same meet, 2 other Nittany Lions also set school records. Caitlin Lane set the record for the women's 1000 meter, setting the new mark at 2:44.24. Casimir Loxsom also set the record for the men's 600 meters, setting the new mark at 1:16.66.

Also, our men’s volleyball team posted an opening season victory over defending national champion, Ohio State. The Nittany Lions, posted a dominating 3-0 match (25-22, 25-23, 25-17), hit at a .236 with 41 kills, 7 aces, 32 digs and 7.5 blocks, all while holding the Buckeyes to a .152 hitting percentage. If you remember this avenges a season ending loss, 3-1, to the Buckeyes in the semifinal match for the title, which the Buckeyes went on to win in the next match. Hopefully the Nittany Lions can also avenge their loss last year and take home the national title once again.

For the Glory…

No Problem

It was really annoying me that one of our athelets sets an NCAA record as a freshman in his firs ever singles event, and there is no mention of it anywhere on a PSU sports website.

Nice work

First, big props to Beth. I think everyone can agree she is building a legacy and doing a great job with both track teams. (And yes, we all still love Harry)

Second, the new surface they installed in Ashenfelter over the summer is great. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a few records while the “shine” is still on it. Why, I was just up there this morning doing some fartleks (cold and rainy out) and I’m closing in on 9 minute miles for a 5K! :-) (c’mon, I’m an old guy)

Lastly, here’s a link to the PSU story on Creese’s record.

There were some other PSU records

That fell at the challenge, I didn’t include them here, which I regret, and might need to go back and fix that.

Great meet for PSU!!

Ashenfelter

is open to the public from 8 am – noon, Monday thru Friday. Unless there is a meet. Plenty of people walk the entire interior of the building (close to 400 meters), some jog, some stay on just the track portion (200 meters in the inside lane). If you hit it at the right time when they are prepping for or soon after a meet you could get to run on the track while the banks are up – that’s always fun. Just make sure you have a parking pass for stadium west as the cops cruise through about once-twice a semester. Resident passes are $9 a month at the parking office in the Eisenhower parking garage.

Love the Ashenfelter name. That family

was our neighbor back in the day. Used to see Nip out on training runs. Locals even named one of the roads Olympic in his honor.

Don’t forget about the perennially ranked men’s and women’s rugby teams!

The wrestling team, covered well by Galen,

is kicking a$$ and taking names.
