If McGloin plays I think we'd win this game.

Total inability to get a first down is the vast majority of the problem.

...may we compete with fierce intensity, with the gifts that we have been given...

by jesse. on Jan 2, 2012 2:56 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

McGloin is awful

Why is it that watching Bolden’s awfulness causes people to forget how bad McGloin is.

That doesn’t even begin to encompass the missed blocks and general cluelessness of our line.

by elefantstn on Jan 2, 2012 2:58 PM EST up reply actions

How do you not understand the difference between the two?

McGloin, not great. Bolden is the worst quarterback to ever start a game for Penn State. I can’t think of another quarterback, for any team, that Bolden is better than.

Get two first downs and flip field position, give the defense some time to rest and adjust, and this is a different game.

...may we compete with fierce intensity, with the gifts that we have been given...

by jesse. on Jan 2, 2012 3:00 PM EST up reply actions   2 recs

Exactly my point.

I’d like to apologize for Chris for underestimating just how much Bolden sucks.

Are you sure Joe done it this a'way?

by ReadingRambler on Jan 2, 2012 3:02 PM EST up reply actions

I understand the difference

But it’s not enough to make this offense score 4 TDs. Field position doesn’t matter, they are going 80 yards at will.

McG is marginally less awful, but not remotely competent.

by elefantstn on Jan 2, 2012 3:02 PM EST up reply actions

That's really not true.

They have two long passes, three field goals and two missed field goals.

Do what you want to do, but I find dismissing our team’s hard work to overcome their flaws and the hard work of their opponents to be pathetically reactionary.

Yes, this game had the potential to be very similar to that Holiday Bowl.

Opponent’s high powered offense featuring QB with gaudy numbers against a good, solid defense. Differences from that game: the defense actually made some plays in that BYU game, and most importantly, a pretty decent QB performance by Tony Sacca.

by Horse N Buggy on Jan 2, 2012 3:16 PM EST up reply actions

Absolutely true

The way the defense is playing makes me feel we may still lose but having an actual passing threat would have allowed PSU to control the ball more with the run and keep them off the field.

McGloin is significantly better than Bolden. I can’t believe I wasted weeks of my life this fall debating with people who felt differently.

by mundyscorner99 on Jan 2, 2012 3:03 PM EST up reply actions

I mean, even that first Houston drive...

A bunch of nothing plays, and two long passes — one a semi-broken play, the other a huge HURRRR in our secondary. But PSU’s defense was making some plays out there. They’re playing alone, though. Bolden is too much of an anchor, and nobody else is really helping on offense aside from Justin Brown.

by elefantstn on Jan 2, 2012 3:11 PM EST up reply actions

What gulf?

Did you notice that after our first touchdown, the defense seemed to play much better? It’s almost as though moving the football and giving your defense rest improves their play.

Houston is not the better team if Penn State has a quarterback who can take advantage of 8 and 9 guys playing in the box.

Are you sure Joe done it this a'way?

We’ve already played this game against Northwestern. The difference is that Northwestern’s receivers were better and McGloin played well because he’s a superior quarterback.

1998: 1691 yds 121-226 .535% 6 TD 8 INT

Thompson was a much more credible downfield threat, too. Liked him. Hung in and took a ton of hits in his career.

KT was wildly underrated by our fanbase.

And by “underrated” I mean people remember him as terrible when he was actually kind of decent.

McGloin’s a notch below Thompson, IMO.

And I'd like to throw this in, as well.

Bolden is terrible and has no business starting anywhere, AND gets zero help from those around him. It’s like watching Matt Senneca again. Even when he threw a rare beautiful pass, it would be dropped.

I also felt the same way last year about the running game

You may recall that Royster suddenly had holes to run through once McGloin started playing. Maybe it was just a coincidence or the threat of a passing game to open things up for the running game. I feel it was the latter.

Terribly underthrown

But again Moye didn’t play the ball for shit. Bryant Johnson would have gone up and got that. That’s why Bryan Johnson was a first round pick, and Moye’s going to be an UFA who gets cut in training camp.

I'm blaming both of them.

I started out stating that the ball was horribly underthrown. Mills absolutely underthrew them that badly. And BJ made plays on them. But BJ also seemed to anticipate the underthrows – I was never sure if they were intentional or not – I just assumed not and BJ was ridiculous.

Moye had them beat deep.

If he anticipates an underthrow and Bolden throws it where it should be, then we miss out on a TD.

All of our qb's need to go

1. Bolden is terrible.
2. If Jones wanted to play he would have gotten his act together and got his grades up to par. He has had 2 years to do it.

IMO McGloin COULD be the answer if he could improve his consistency.

When he’s on, he’s really very good. He has large lapses though where he’s just not accurate enough. Then he forces things and sucks.

Scrap is a great DC

and would be a good HC for Penn State, imho, Aurabass. Personally, this has been two months of Hell, part of which has to have been our coaches looking over their shoulders at the search committee, and wondering what is going to happen to them.

Plus, the kids’ attention has been elsewhere. There was a report that even Silas Redd, our good RB, thought about transferring! Too many uncertainties, with no clarity to help clear ANY of the fog.

"Make haste to reassure us, I beg you, and tell us that our fellow citizens understand us, support us, and protect us as we ourselves are protecting the glory of the Empire.

Agreed

Still a good to great DC, but I think his ability as an HC is still up in the air. Tough to judge someone’s job performance when they aren’t really given a fair shot

Leaving those timeouts up there still annoys the hell out of me. No excuse for that, unless, you know, you’re giving up.

"Believe deep down in your heart that you're destined to do great things."

by LAPSU on Jan 2, 2012 3:49 PM EST up reply actions

LAPSU, I think

Scrap realized a win was just not in the cards for us. It’s like some days at work for me: I have big plans to get a bunch of stuff done, but then I get a phone call or e-mail that starts the train wreck. I end up just trying to survive the day, with hopes for a better tomorrow.

"Make haste to reassure us, I beg you, and tell us that our fellow citizens understand us, support us, and protect us as we ourselves are protecting the glory of the Empire.

by PSU_Lions_84 on Jan 2, 2012 3:54 PM EST up reply actions

Haha, totally get that analogy

Still, we weren’t out of the game into the 4th quarter, technically. As a HC, I feel like if you use one of those timeouts to stop the clock, it gives the impression that you still think you have a shot. And if that impression rubs off on just one player who sets one block that leads to a big run, then momentum swings back in your favor, all because you called a timeout to draw up a play.

Not saying that we would have won if Scrap had called a timeout, but at least give the players a shot, even if they’ve been getting stomped up and down the field all day.

I don’t know, I’ve wanted Bradley to get the job ever since he took over, he’s done a great job under very rough circumstances, but laying down like that when we weren’t out of it mathematically yet just annoys me.

"Believe deep down in your heart that you're destined to do great things."

it was some stupid Gen Ed, creative writing or something ridiculous. We had to come up with alliterations for our names (Ridiculous Redd, Stupendous Still, you get the idea) and then write something building off of that.

So we had to present these things at the end of it, and of course, Morelli’s is a gem: Awesome Morelli. The professor just stared at him. It was fantastic.

Moral of the story: Morelli was a mongoloid.

It is easy to go down into Hell; night and day, the gates of dark Death stand wide; but to climb back again, to retrace one's steps to the upper air - there's the rub, the task.

At this point, I'm wondering if all of their Plan A choices have turned them down

And now they’re sitting their with their thumbs up their asses trying to figure out what to do. Because they know the alumni backlash they’ll get for hiring Bill O’whateverhisnameis over Scrap.

The only hope I have in this whole process is Russ Rose. I have great faith in him, and I hope he doesn’t let us down.

Cael Sanderson.

He has the Lion wrestling team on fire.

Cael was my vote for HC

unless I read your post about Father Mac — he is now my leading candidate!!

Is he involved in the search has well?

I wasn’t aware that he was, but if that is true I will add his name to the list. Sanderson is a beast.

Scrap is probably the best man for this job

Black shoes, basic blues, no names, all game.

by JIMPSU on Jan 2, 2012 3:53 PM EST reply actions

I still think Bolden may have been better had he really been given the job early

But now, I think it’s best for all involved if he just left. Even with a new staff, I think there will still be too much resentment and memories for him to get over the mental block. Let him go somewhere else and hopefully find success

by bubba0077 on Jan 2, 2012 3:53 PM EST reply actions

Respectfully

you could not be more wrong. He had the job earlier and lost it.

No, he was on the yo-yo

Clearly he wasn’t mentally able to handle that. Now he’s damaged goods as long as he stays. He still might not turn into a good (or even decent) QB, but the revolving door early in the system did him no favors.

Bolden doesn't sit on the sidelines during practice and do nothing.

What strikes me is he has shown NO improvement. You don’t improve on Saturdays. You improve Sunday through Friday, and show it on Saturday.

Either he failed, or the coaches failed him. But he’s not even a serviceable signal caller.

by MainLion on Jan 2, 2012 3:56 PM EST up reply actions

Not saying

this isn’t a failing on Bolden’s part, or that he isn’t a terrible QB right now. A mentally stronger person wouldn’t have been affected, or even been motivated by the competition. But that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t have at least been serviceable.

How can a QB be a 4 star recruit

And not complete a screen pass? Star recruits @ Penn State = epic fail.

by bbpennstate10 on Jan 2, 2012 3:57 PM EST up reply actions

The problem with screen passes is not just the QB

Our line can’t execute them properly, that’s why McGloin couldn’t do it either.

Are you sure Joe done it this a'way?

I remember sitting in the Orange Bowl, exhausted after watching that tiny kicker Kelly finally split the posts.

Has it really been that long?
