Recruiting - A Different Viewpoint: Yes, I Know Who I Want To Win The Superbowl.
Ok, so I apologize if the article above has already been cited and this topic broached. As someone who roots for the New York Yankees and a couple of other NY/NJ metro area teams, I have no problem displaying my disgust for the Red Sox, Bruins, Celtics, and of course, the New England Patriots. While I dislike Tom Brady, Bill Bellichek and so many others who were on this team in the past (Rodney Harrison being the biggest example), something struck me as I read the article above...
Yes, many of you are not going to like it, as I didn't at first. In fact, I turned queasy and almost hurled, but I realized WE SHOULD ROOT FOR THE PATRIOTS TO WIN THE SUPERBOWL. WTF...You say?? Am I mad, have I become deranged??! No, I am not and as much as it hurts me to do so; I have to concede the fact that BO'B earning a Superbowl ring may be the best thing for us in maintaining or saving PSU's current recruiting class AND it can only be beneficial for future recruiting efforts. I don't have to explain, BSD readers are knowledgable enough. A 17/18 year old kid looks at a college coach who just earned one of the most valuable trinkets in sports in a positive light and just might be persuaded to play for him. The conversation goes something like this...
Recruit: "Hey Coach, can I see your Superbowl ring??"
BO'B: "Why yes, son..here take a look at it..nice isn't it"?
Recruit: "Wow, this ring is so awesome...."
BO'B: "Yes, and just think, if you come and play for me, you can see it everyday and you may even reach the Superbowl one day."
I know, I know a bit oversimplified, but this is an aspect, as the article mentioned above, that will lure recruits. Other articles and reading about the recruits reactions after NE's victory over Denver have totally changed my views on this matter.
Of course, there are those who say BO'B needs to be present more to talk and meet with individual recruits, but you know what, I don't know if I totally buy that logic. At least from what we have heard and seen so far, the assembled coaching staff has done a pretty good job of maintaining contact with the recruits and keep them from bolting. They seem capable enough and this is only strengthening my belief that the best thing for coach BO'B and PSU is to win the Superbowl. In fact, it may be enough for BO'B to get to the Superbowl, and I think the 45-10 barrage against Denver only helped as well, but to get to and win the Superbowl would be the ultimate validation for BO'B in many people's eyes, even if he is only an offensive coordinator.
Yes, people will say that Bellichek is the guy REALLY calling plays, in fact other coaches will probably tell these recruits that as well, but such dominant on the field success by BO'B will minimize the impact of those arguments.
Of course, good recruiting doesn't always guarantee great teams (i.e. any Ron Zook coached teams), but I think most of us can agree that BO'B at least looks like he will be a better coach than the Zookster, and his assembled staff is much better I would argue.
So there you have it, without shame, regret or reservation I am rooting for the Patriots to win the Superbowl, because I believe this will only help PSU's football team in the future. With the caveat that this will be the only year in my hopefully long life that I will ever root for the New England Patriots. Feel free to disagree with me, but I'm not changing my mind....that is of course, unless the Patriots get caught cheating again and BO'B is at the center of it....
Would love to hear people's thoughts.

Im a Jets fan.
So the patriots can fuck off. But because of how much I love PSU (way more than i love the jets). I admit I wouldn’t mind seeing my next head coach reach the pinnacle of the game of football. Even if its with the damn Patriots. There I said it.
keep winning ugly
I'm just happy a New Yorker agrees with me...
While I hate them as well, I can’t argue with what I’ve read so far about how he has a positive image to many recruits, and you know that can only be amplified by winning a ring.
short in stature, tall in power, wide of vision & narrow of purpose.
The more I think about
the more I feel the Pats winning it all is a good thing.
"my dad says Michigan used to be good"
I understood the positives of this argument but we just saw the massive negative with a decommit from one of the biggest PSU proponents Cam Williams all because BOB was too busy to actualy meet with the kid.
I would argue that in the long term...
That winning the Superbowl may be beneficial for PSU recruiting. I think everyone agrees that this recruiting class was not as strong and we were bound to lose someone else. Additionally, we may still be able to add some good players out there if BO’B keeps winning.
Also do we know for sure that he never met the kid? I am curious to know.

I agree.
And I think it’s important to keep the perspective of the present, which is that he is going to coach the Pats and not come to PSU before the season is over. From that perspective, I think the Pats winning the Super Bowl is the biggest positive we can get. The debate whether he should’ve stuck with the Pats/come to Penn State is a different argument altogether.

You really think it was all because
of BOB being “too busy”? It has nothing to do with the last 2 months?

What I want to know is...
If anyone knows whether BO’B definitely DID NOT meet with Cam? I thought, and I haven’t been keeping up with the posts so someone correct me if I’m wrong, that he met with a lot of the recruits last Sunday.

No meeting yet just brief phone calls I believe
Cam and Armani cancelled there visit because he wouldn’t be there till late and they wanted time to meet with him one on one which was supposed to happen next weekend on there visit.
I think him not meeting with them was the nail in the coffin in the short term because the main reason they waivered was the loss of there recruiter.
Again i’m only speaking in the short term. I fully understand the benefit of saying your a super bowl champ coach.
Ok, thanks for clearing that up.
I do agree with what you said about the short term as well. I’m thinking that they gambling a bit with this class. If NE blows out Baltimore this weekend, that may help get a commit or two

BO'B
was supposed to meet with Cam and Armani on Jan 27th.
Some guy at PSU Hershey Med Center just discovered a virus that eats cancer. Where were the CNN trucks for that? THON will probably break $10 mil this year. Put that on "Outside the Lines".
Urban Meyer...
must of made Cam an offer he couldn’t refuse…girls, hookers, cash, cars, etc. Haha..only half joking.

Any offer from Urban is only for 2 years anyway till he has a nervous breakdown or heart problems ;)
Try to picture the OSU fan base reaction:
God forbid Meyer has a health issue in the middle of the year.

I'm really surprised by the Williams decommit
Mainly because we kept LJ Sr. I figured he was the keystone for Williams staying on board.
Consider this my official declaration of non-support of child molestation.
He gave an interview or something like that,
where he said he was disappointed in PSU for not keeping Bill Kenney (his recruiter).

Yeah I screwed that up.
I just assumed a defensive recruit was tied to LJ Sr.
I can’t really fault the kid for that. I wish Urb nothing but the worst though.
Consider this my official declaration of non-support of child molestation.
I've hated the Patriots since Tom Brady took over for Bledsoe
That was only intensified by my Eagles losing a heartbreaking SB in 2004, and then multiplied when Spygate unfurled. They’ve been in the realm of the rival NFC East teams as far as my hate index goes.
But since we hired O’Brien, I’ve suspended that hatred and have been rooting for them (passively of course) in the playoffs. Not only do I think it will help future recruiting if our coach wins a SB and then takes over here, I am genuinely supporting O’Brien and want him to succeed.
Back to recruiting, I think there are far too many people up in arms about losing a few recruits to Urban & tOSU while our new coach is in the playoffs. I also think too much attention is paid to recruiting in general. You can have all the best ingredients, but they won’t help if you can’t cook in the first place.
I still can't get on board the Pats' train, although I 'll place my imprimatur on a beatdown of the Ratbirds this Sunday.
Of the four remaining teams, I’m with the Giants only because this guy played there:

According to Sekrah..
Skyler just re-opened his committment – after staff tells him they want him at safety.
Joseph V. Paterno has left an impression on my soul that wil never, EVER go away.
I wouldn't put much faith in Sekrah
But you can see the staff scrambling to try to get a QB. So I am sure they know Skyler is, in one of two ways, weak..1) his committment to Penn State or 2) his QB skills. I will believe our staff’s assessment over Sekrah.
It is easy to see the issues currently at Penn State. Sandusky isn’t going away soon. And on this one, the Morningwegs have had several meetings with the new staff and might see Skyler’s future isn’t as a QB at Penn State. You know what, I don’t know any more than Sekrah
If you are tempted to fight fire with fire, remember that the Fire Department normally uses water.
I said it on a different thread and I'll say it again
I hope the Pats put up 50+ points a game on the way to a Super Bowl title, while BOB stands on the sidelines holding a massive “Come to Penn State” sign over his head.
