Friday Off Topic: Deserted Island Music

Sometime ago on Twitter, someone (I actually think it was Michael Showalter of the unbelievably underrated comedy troupe Stella) asked what album you would take with you if you knew you were going to be trapped on a deserted island. I've always found these questions stupid ("If you could be stranded with one book, what would it be?" "Uh, none. How about I don't be stranded, dumbass?"), but I indulged the question and answered thusly:

"Miley Cyrus: Greatest Hits...would make it easier to kill myself."

And with that, we have tonight's Friday Night Off Topic Question - If you were stranded on desert island, with an ipod that somehow never lost power, what one album would you request to be loaded on said ipod?

The catch: No mix tapes; must be a studio album of an actual singer/band (no movie soundtracks nor live concert collaborations); and cannot be a book on tape (actual music only).

Discuss.

This question has always been a problem for me

As my moods decide what music I listen to on a daily basis.

But if I HAD to choose, I’d say my “video game music” playlist. More specifically, my Pokemon soundtrack.

Go ahead, you can make fun of me now (just keep in mind that every time I win an official Nintendo tournament, I get a ****ton of money and a trip to Japan).

Nothing wrong with video game music

My Chrono Cross and FF7 OSTs make my rotations regularly.

Don't love music.

If I’m on a deserted island, one stupid fucking album that I play over and over and over is not helping. It’s probably hurting.

Oh, but I do love stella.

And Michael Ian Black is my favorite twitter follow. and it’s not even close.

It's funny,

Because I’m the opposite. I love music, and I don’t mind playing a single song (let alone an entire album) over and over again.

by misdreavus79 on Jan 20, 2012 10:19 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, I just don't "get" music.

Sure, background filler, whatever. It all just seems to fall into one of two categories for me. Pure crap that raises my blood pressure, or fine and I can deal with it.

I sang and played instruments as a child,

so I view it differently.

And I now work with a few sound engineers, so there you go.

I’ve been known to edit a few songs myself, but I don’t do it professionally.

by misdreavus79 on Jan 20, 2012 10:24 PM EST up reply actions

Hey, I'm certainly not knocking it.

It’s more than valid. Maybe I don’t have a soul. A lot of people that encounter me professionally would probably swear to it. It just doesn’t make sense to me.

This is the same as my "one CD for a long road trip"

And it’s Paul Simon’s “Graceland”.

I think about this question all the time.....

…and that album is always the only answer I have. But at the same time I do not consider it my favorite album for non-desert island listening. Its just the perfect desert island album.

It's a really tough call.

As much as I want to pick that Backstreet Boys album with them getting off the plane, I think I’d go with The Clarks “Let It Go”

Talking Heads

Stop Making Sense soundtrack

Yes, I know it wasn’t a studio album, but I’m also not really stuck on a deserted island.

They said live album was fine.

And that is a good pick. But I’ve got to go with Purple Rain.

Or, probably more realistically

I’d pick one of the 100 or so Live Phish releases.

Sublime "40 Oz. to Freedom"

Because it goes well with the island vibe and would be fun to drink to when I ferment coconut juice and get hammered.

Woah.

Dynamite artist suggestion, but I would take their self-titled album. What a badass album.

by Jeff Junstrom on Jan 20, 2012 10:35 PM EST up reply actions

You can't go wrong with any of their stuff, really

though the middle album is pretty rough around the edges due to Nowell going into full on junkie status. I’m partial to 40 Oz. because it’s more ghetto-infused and makes me want to sit on a porch, get fat and drink 40s all day long.

I guess I’d have to go with the “Joshua Tree” by U2.

Because if you’re stranded on a desert island you probably still haven’t found what you’re looking for.

I'm going off-off topic.

I just saw the King’s Speech. I held off forever. I was worried it was one of those artsy/faux-intellectual movies (like, you know, a David Lynch movie or Fight Club or something).

Holy shit. Was it ever fucking excellent. If you haven’t seen it, find a way to watch it this weekend. No joke.

You're right.

And I have some recollection of that. But it may have been pre-King’s Speech? Either way, I’m pretending it was, so that I can tell people to go watch it now. Superb.

Excellent choice millz

Howevah, “Kind of Blue” is the single greatest piece of recorded music in the history of recorded music and I’m sticking with it. Alternatively, Dylan’s “Blood on the Tracks” might be nice just as a reminder that there are worse things in life than being stranded on an island.

the answer frequently changes, but usually comes down to one of these:

Radiohead – OK Computer
Depeche Mode – Violator
New Order – Singles
Kraftwerk – Computer World

or the winner, at the moment:

I'm good with anything except

Handel’s “Water Music” symphony. I mean, if you are on an island (by definition, surrounded by water), why be reminded of that when you’re listening to music?

I'm big into a lot of different music

Seeing as I have about 60 gigs of music on my computer, it’s really hard to narrow it down to one album. My tastes also very widely depending on the day anywhere from blues, to heavy metal, to country and everything in between.

That being said, if I was to pick one single album, I think it would be Lynyrd Skynyrd ‘Lyve from Steel Town’. I can pretty much listen to Skynyrd any time, so that’s probably a safe bet.

Some other albums I considered:
Clutch – From Beale Street to Oblivion
Tool – Laturalus
Alice In Chains – Dirt
Rush – Moving Pictures
