Recruiting this weekend

What do OregonState, UCLA, Vanderbilt, Southern Miss., Minnesota, East Carolina, and Northwestern have in common?? Anybody?? Well let me tell yout they all have more ESPN 150 Recrutis than our beloved PSU, and sadly a couple of these teams only have 1 of these players. All of these teams are terrible!!!! Now the last thing i want to do is start a *STARS* argument, but I am just really hoping that the coaches can lock it up, lock it down, or whatever you want to call it. Especially after I hear Cam Williams has moved on(any truth to that?). I know coaches can coach up the lightly recruited kids or some that slip throught the cracks of the recruitong services and get them to play well. But I just cannot ignore the list of teams I see getting these recruits and the on field success it relates to. Ohio state is always near the top and always played very well until they got Fickled last season, Alabama....well i guess that speaks for itself, LSU, Oklahoma, Texas(before they lost the only 2 QBs they have had since what 2003 i.e. Vince Young and Colt McCoy), etc. I also know there are some questionable recruiting practices out there that help these teams get more players in each class. But come on man, Minnesota? East Carolina? Heres hoping for a great weekend of recuiting and looking foward to the siren going off multiple times

True that Cam is off to OSU.

No word on Armani, which I’m treating as good news. If they were as tight as we all thought, why wouldn’t he (Reeves) jumped at the same time?

Like it or not, the recruiting bus MIGHT have caught on fire even if there was a calm transition away from Joe. Many recruits in the past have said, “Coach Joe is a cool guy; I want to play for a living legend.” And I stand by my statement about recruiting turmoil even if we had landed Meyer as HC — some kids are smart enough to see how he left Florida — twice — and wonder if he would be coaching for years.

Finally, as you noted, the “stars” thing is such a train wreck . . . Kids mature at different rates, so five stars today might be two in the future because the kid peaked at age 18.

Hang in there, Adam!

I think this is Armani's official visit.

So, I am not sure he is ready to commit until after he gets all the dog and pony hows done today. He is also pretty strong with Michy (ugh). I am cautiously optimistic. Lots of trolls on all the boards trying to drum up doom and gloom.

I’d feel better if we were getting some blue chips. However, football history is full of 3 and less stars who have made it big and five stars who have struggled. Only time will tell.

Last I had read, Armani and Cam were supposed to have their official and visit with BOB on Jan 27th.

Some guy at PSU Hershey Med Center just discovered a virus that eats cancer. Where were the CNN trucks for that? THON will probably break $10 mil this year. Put that on "Outside the Lines".

Do you think Cam will still show up?

I really don’t want him yammering in Armani’s ear, “At Ohio State, their facilities are better than this, their dining table has THREE flavors of pudding, etc., etc., etc.”

That was before Cam’s announcement so I doubt he will be there.

Well you'll be disappointed

There are no ESPN 150’s visiting this weekend. That said, there are some nice looking kids at UP this weekend. I hope we can sign 3-6 of them and get moving towards the B/W game and next fall.

You gotta understand, the black cloud over PSU is still there until the Sandusky thing is settled. Hopefully, next fall, we will see what kind of coach Bill is and if recruits are willing to look seriously at Penn State.

Surprised the people stayed that did

With new coaches and everything I didn’t expect us to have a great Recruiting class. I am surprised that any of the big names on the list stuck around. What do you expect we have a new coach who was just hired. He is going to have issues this year. I will be upset next year if they don’t pull anyone big in but this year I am not worried about what kind of class they have. I expect a down year and if everyone is going to get this frustrated over recruiting this year just wait until the season starts and the players are trying to learn a new system. BOB is not a well known coach and all the players that were recruited by different coaches that are not on the staff are scared. One question I have is why do the position coaches not recruit the people they are going to coach?

by jetskijoe on Jan 21, 2012 11:04 AM EST reply actions

I think the position coaches and appropriate coordinators do recruit them.

But the regional guy is usually the primary contact and has often built a long term relationship with a recruit and, often times more importantly, mom and dad.

We had 6 of the ESPN 150 in 2010.

…and if you look at the six we had on there, hardly any of them have made an impact. Bolden was of course on there as the number 3 or 4 QB. Fortt was on there too and he’s a player…but there’s also 2-3 guys that I’ve never heard of.

So while I was disappointed about Camren’s choice to go to OSU…these things play out in unforseen ways. Remember the angst when ArmPunt Pryor chose the Bucks over us. How did that turn out?

If you've never heard of them, it is probably b/c you don't follow PSU recruiting.

Not trying to be a jerk, but the others are names anyone following PSU recruiting (even if only casually, like me) would know.

by emccomb1 on Jan 21, 2012 12:01 PM EST up reply actions

there are names that you hear of in recruiting...

…and names that you hear of because they make an impact on the depth chart. The first is irrelevant, the second makes the difference.

by mfounds67 on Jan 21, 2012 12:27 PM EST up reply actions

My guess is...

…that Dieffenbach, Olaniyan, Hailes, and Royer were the names you are saying haven’t made an impact. Coincidentally, they were all red-shirted, too. Fortt and Bolden are more notable because Fortt is a crazy mo-fo and QB was a high need position (and still is until proven otherwise).

I have a feeling that in one or two years, you will know the names of at least two more, Dieffenbach and Olaniyan/Hailes. There is a lot of depth at LB, so Royer I am on the fence with whether he will break out.

Give the guys some time, most don’t just magically become amazing college athletes after they sign an LOI.

by TheSwish on Jan 21, 2012 12:42 PM EST up reply actions

We'll probably begin to hear the names

Deon Barnes and Shawn Oakman soon as well. Shawn has a massive frame for the coaches to work with.

by The Booster on Jan 21, 2012 12:49 PM EST up reply actions

Surprised

Ok OK Ok. Im not standing on the ledge. Bolden I think could be a good QB(I was a Bolden guy first, but that damn McGloin is such a serviceable QB) if he had the right coaching, he’s got a strong arm(i.e. the laser he threw to Justin Brown in the bowl game and the 125 passes that MOYE DROPPED most of which could have been huge gains) and poise in the pocket . I cant help but wonder did they practice running screens or did they just put it in the gameplan and hope it worked. JayPa while I think he was a smart guy and he knows football, didnt impress me with his QB coaching skills. I bet we see a nice improvement of him this year under O’Brien, which I am looking forward to. I just dont like to see so many recruits leaving to go elsewhere(Ohio State) and I was surprised to see Cam Williams go somewhere else. Considering he seemed to be such a staunch PSU guy. Also considering the fact that both LJ and Vandy are sticking around.
Will seeing him leave cause more attrition or do you think the recruits they have anow are pretty commited? If Reeves goes with him, does it open the door to get Cox or is he gone too?

by AdamP84 on Jan 21, 2012 12:02 PM EST reply actions

It'd be great for recruiting if Bolden was to tear it up next year

Something the previous coaching staff couldn’t do with him the last 2. Granted RoBo had something to do with that as well. But it would be a very good sign for the offensive coaching staff.

by The Booster on Jan 21, 2012 12:28 PM EST up reply actions

It's probably too much to hope for

that Bolden lives up to all his potential and hype at this point. But if they can take Bolden in 8 months and turn him into a season-long serviceable QB, that would be huge for recruiting and for the fan base to get on board with the new coaches for future years. Plus it would limit the need to dump another raw recruit into the fire to play QB sometime in the next two years. There’s no way McGloin can be the go-to guy in O’Brien’s offense if he runs it at all like the Pats. Check down? What does that mean? Does that mean underthrow the ball at the #1 route even if the guy is triple covered or fell down?

by PSUCharmas on Jan 21, 2012 12:31 PM EST up reply actions

I can relate to that.

I just reminisced and looked up Paul Jones’s Rivals profile. I was inspired when I saw, “pro-style QB.” Now, just get the man focused a little on school and who knows..

by The Booster on Jan 21, 2012 12:43 PM EST up reply actions

Not jumping on you, Booster,

but please recall Jones’ fall issues resulted from the staff (inc. academic support) failing to realize that summer classes no longer counted towards eligibility requirements — Jones made progress during the summer, which would have made him eligible for the bowl game. But, in that instance he was something like .2 or .02 shy of the necessary GPA. I asked at the time, but did not hear, if that shortfall was against NCAA or PSU standards.

I admire Jones for continuing to hang in there. Please recall he “won” the starting job in spring — or so we all thought. Academics (again, some not his fault) have tripped him up, and instead of bailing for someplace else (cough, SEC-land, cough, cough) he seems to working on his studies. Yet another “Success with Honor” candidate, imo.

84, NCAA standards.

He failed to get his cumulative GPA up to 2.0. I think he would be way behind at this point. He practiced with the team for the month of december, and the reports of his throwing prowess were downright depressing.

Certainly not playing for so long contributed to that, but I am not encouraged by having a semester to focus solely on academics WITH the program academic support and not being able to get to 2.0.

But not the more strict PSU standards.

I doubt we will ever really know, since I wouldn’t want to be publically talking about my grades if they were around the 2.0 area.

if the NCAA eligibility were less than 2.0. Bradley said he needed to make cumulative 2.0 to become eligible (here) and he didn’t get there.

Just checked the NCAA bylaws.

Your minimum GPA for eligibility depends on what year you are. Second-years must have at least 90% of the minimum GPA for graduation, third-years 95%, and 4th/5th years 100%.

Since PSU requires a 2.0 for all majors, this means that as a sophomore or junior, a student-athlete would not need a 2.0 to be academically eligible per NCAA standards. PJ was definitely eligible if in fact he had a 1.98, and I applaud our football program for forcing our students to maintain a C average.

Bolden/Jones

I do love the eternal optimism of many on this board that Bolden and Jones will somehow transform into the second coming of Collins and Blackledge. But Jones, who has had 2 years to do nothing but get passing grades, has failed to get passing grades. Plus if this kid had a burning desire to play on Saturdays, you would think he would have gotten this situation rectified this past year. I’ve seen some things around the boards intimating that this “the staff screwed up on his classes” explanation might have been just cover for why he isn’t making any academic progress. But who knows? I think this guy is going to flunk out, or at the least never see the field on Saturday.

With a new offense staff on board, the best thing to try and salvage Bolden would be for him to redshirt this coming season and learn how to play and be a leader on the practice field. The playing field on Saturday should be where you show off what you learned in practice.

ESPN is by far the worst

Agreed psume06. Much rather prefer looking at Scout and Rivals, ESPN is way off. All of them have a slight bias one way or the other, but at least Scout and Rivals have a lot of credibility. Look at the recruiting classes from 2004-2009 and you’ll see what I mean

Skyler M.

If he signs to come to PSU, what are the chances he comes in and starts right away? I would have to say somewhat good considering the QB situation PSU has going on right now. Would that be an upgrade over the more experienced Scranton Strangler?

by AdamP84 on Jan 21, 2012 3:48 PM EST reply actions

Unless Skyler really shows something

I think the RoBo situation writes a cautionary tale, even to this new batch of coaches. Putting that kind of stress on a freshman (BOB: “No pressure, kid, but my entire career is resting on your throwing arm.”) could result in results similar to where we are today.

Any JUCO’s or other transfers out there?

Anybody have insight on why we would talk about switching Skyler to safety when we need QBs? I am NOT suggesting we deceive the kid, but why not give him a shot at QB before making a decision about a move to defense?

Eh, I wasn't very proud before the disaster either

This year especially, but for the last several too, the offense has made every game a gut-wrenching anxious experience and I’d lost faith in the offensive coaching staff. I was hoping Joe would retire this year just so we could get it over with. Even under the best circumstances, the transition would be difficult.

I wasn’t ashamed to be a Penn State fan ever, but it hasn’t always been a happy experience.

You are a Penn Stater who was unhappy because you knew the history of our program — not an FNG implying he would help “fix the problem”. I know, I know — I am reading WAY too much into Hixon’s statement, and I mean no hate. I just cringe bc those comments reinforce the “popular” opinion that PSU football needs to be fixed in some major way because of the JS scandal.
