What happened to recruiting these kids?
BOB and his assistants have already show they're adamant about recruiting, going after kids across the country, kids previously committed, ones that have the famous/infamous 5*STARZ, etc. They're are pursuing LB's from bama and QB's from GA. They've been recruiting New England hard. But my question is what happened in the recruitment of the kids below and if we're still pursuing them (or why aren't we pursuing them)?
**NOTE: I did a Scout search- hate basing things off a recruiting website, but these kids are consensus top performers**
-Stefon Diggs, WR Olney, MD
-Ronald Darby, CB Oxon Hill, MD
-Darius Hamilton, DE Ramsey, NJ
-Eddie Goldman, DT Wash DC
-Deaysean Rippy, LB Pittsburgh, PA
-Joel Caleb, WR Midlothian, VA
Commits:
-Noah Spence, DE Harrisburg, PA (obviously OSU commit, but did BOB and staff contact him recently?)
-Rushel Shell- RB, Hopewell, PA (Pitt commit)
-Cyrus Jones, WR Baltimore, MD (Bama commit)
-Elijah Shumate, S Ramsey, NJ (Notre Dame commit)
-Leonte Carroo, WR Ramsey, NJ (Rutgers commit)
-Wes Brown, RB Olney, MD (Maryland commit)
-Colin Thompson, TE Warminster, PA (Florida commit)
-J.J. Denman, OT Fairless Hills, PA (Wisconsin verbal)
-Ryan Watson, OG Olney, MD (Purdue commit)
- D.J. Singleton, S Jersey City, NJ (Wisconsin commit)
-Sam Lebbie, LB Hyattsville, MD (WV commit)
BSD this post might require some time and research, but I'm curious about those prospects, especially when you consider that these guys are right in our backyard and Larry Johnson's grounds. On top of that, some of those guys could come in and provide immediate help or depth at a key position.

Everyone is different, so it would be hard to make a sweeping generalization about these kids.
It sucks to lose local talent, but sometimes a kid just wants to play elsewhere, or has home issues, or some other reason. I’d love to lock up every four- and five-star kid in PA/NJ/VA/MD, but that’s never going to happen. Just gotta roll with the punches.
Adam Breneman is visiting PSU in early February. Would be nice to get a five-star on board early and hit the ground hard with the Class of ’13.

Was hoping for maybe 2-3 of those kids
Included the list to see if we were still recruiting ANY (as opposed to all) of those guys. Junny, I definitely agree with you it always sucks to lose out on that local talent and this year was definitely not our year.
There’s some of those guys on that list that I think we should be pushing for though. Eddie Goldman supposedly was previously recruited by LJ, he’s in our backyard, and would make an immediate impact. I know Diggs is recruited by every school in the nation and is flirting with every one of them, but along with him being in our territory I think if BOB makes a play on him, i.e. “you’d stretch the field like Deon Branch” I honestly think we could land him. Hamilton should be a priority, especially after losing out on Spence. We’d need the Dline help and as of right now his recruiting is more open than the other guys we offered/called recently (Voytik, Kelly). On less highly regarded recruits, in your opinion do you think Bench is better and more worthy of a scholarship offer than someone like Blake Rankin?
Obviously, so many things have played against Penn State
in the past: Joe’s age, perception that our offense is predictable and stodgy, lack of QB development, perception that Penn State players (particularly RB’s) don’t succeed in the NFL, weather, B1G style of play . . . . it’s almost endless. Add in the JS scandal and BOB as an unknown commodity, and this year has great potential to be a train wreck.
That said, I REALLY admire the kids who have stood by their commitment to us, and especially Jamil Pollard. We pulled his skolly due to grade issues — he could have walked away, but got his grades together and jumped on the second-chance skolly. That is HUGE to me!

I agree with you on Pollard
Makes you wonder what’s going on in Paul Jones’ head with the floundering and failing for two years now.
Some people just struggle with academics.
Not a question of not being smart — just a struggle to get the stuff from the book to the brain. Plus football, plus a different social scene, plus . . . .

Agree also on Pollard.
Gotta admire that kid. He’s committed to Penn State, not anyone or anything else. I don’t blame kids for getting cold feet after what happened, but kids like JP Schultz (or whatever his last name is) from Shaler and Williams I have a bit of a problem with. Schultz was all gung ho on PSU when he committed, now it appears as if he hates the place. Williams was super gung ho and was a de facto recruiter and now he’s going to OSU?! Sorry, but that’s messed up.
Agree about CWill.
I guess it’s like puppy love: When you fall, you fall hard; when it fails apart, it really blows up.
Hoping Reeves separates from Williams, and hangs in with us. Second choice for him: Michigan (gulp!).

Rippy and Shell never had any real interest in PSU.
Shell is solid for Pitt anyway so talking to him is a waste of time (plus I think he’s trouble).
Rippy might have a hard time qualifying academically…I’m sure you know about his HS.
Spence is firmly under Urban’s clutches. Like Shell it would be a waste of time to pursue him anymore than a phone call (which they probably did).
That's why I was hesitant about including those guys in the post
Knew Shell was a solid commitment to Pitt, but I do remember the coaches contacting him. Also thought that was the Rippy situation
Rippy's situation seems to be weird.
He’s the one that wanted to go to Florida and had an offer, then they pulled it. And he also seems to be a bizarre prospect. Supposedly a top prospect, yet I don’t think PSU ever showed him much love nor did some others. He may be a “tweener” physically. Seems like a good kid, but his school just sucks so bad and that’s a shame for him. Anyway, I think he wants to go somewhere big name and not local, but it seems that may not work out for him and I think he’ll eventually “settle” for Pitt.
No quotation marks needed.
Settling for ShPitt is exactly that — settling for a second-tier school in a weak conference.
Remember 48-14!!

It's funny
I really don’t think Pitt wants him either. Most likely academics. May end up at Texas Tech or Wyoming or somewhere wired.

I was watching TV the other night
and they were featuring a story on USC and Matt Barkley. The top QB prospect committed to Pete Carroll out of HS but will end his college career playing for Lane Kiffin.
It made me think, Penn State has not had to deal with that kind of thing for forty-six years. In that time any recruit who committed to JoePa could be assured he’d play for the same head coach for his entire college career. That was just one of the many things that made Penn State “different” (meaning better) from all the rest. And it was attributable solely to Joe Paterno, ever since he turned down Sullivan’s million dollar offer to coach the Patriots.
It’s sad and truly an end of a remarkable era. There’s no telling how long BOB will stick around, and there’s no way even today’s committments can be assured they will be playing for him when they graduate. Now Penn State is just like all the rest.
