Joe Paterno Is Gone
Paterno family statement:
"It is with great sadness that we announce that Joe Paterno passed away earlier today. His loss leaves a void in our lives that will never be filled.
"He died as he lived. He fought hard until the end, stayed positive, thought only of others and constantly reminded everyone of how blessed his life had been.
"His ambitions were far reaching, but he never believed he had to leave this Happy Valley to achieve them. He was a man devoted to his family, his university, his players and his community."
Pete Thamel of the New York Times reports the details of Joe's passing: "Official details: Joe Paterno passed at 9.25 am of metastatic small cell carcinoma of the lung at Mount Nittany Medical Center."
And in true-to-Joe form, the Paterno family asks that donations in Paterno's memory be made to Special Olympics or THON in lieu of flowers or gifts.

So, this is like the third time in the past 15 hours I've had an emotional breakdown.
Joe, you were an amazing man and I can only hope to meet you in heaven.
"Every player we have, someone-maybe a parent, a grandparent, someone-poured their soul into that young man. They are handing that young man off to us. They are giving us their treasure, and it's our job to make sure we give them back that young man intact and ready to face the world."

I've never been more certain of a person going to heaven
Than I am with Joe.

I agree. (not to get preachy, just stating what I believe)
Hear the written words in Luke 23: 43 Jesus answered him, "Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise." Knowing we are created human, and humans are not perfect just forgiven!
When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, 'I used everything you gave me'.

I was hoping I wouldn’t have to drink this early on a Sunday.
Joe Paterno was a great man. He wasn’t perfect, and he’d be the first one to remind people of this. But he was a legend unlike any we’ll ever see again in college football. I can only hope those who follow in his larger than life footprints keep the spirit of Joe alive in their actions.

“A hard-fought, well-fought, hairline-close game is as classical in sports as tragedy in theater. A tragedy usually ends with the stage strewn with bodies from both sides of a struggle, and you can’t tell who won and who lost. I posted this in a thread back in November, and it's more true today than ever
Penn State made me who I am today; seldom a day goes by when I don’t think about how lucky I am to have gone to such a great school.
Penn State is what it is in large part because of Joe. He inspires so many of us, as students and graduates, to pursue greatness in his mold, through dedication to hard work, integrity, and realizing our potential.
Penn State still means just as much to me as it always has. So does Joe.
Penn State will remain great because we will continue to make it great. I will continue to make it great because Joe will always inspire me to.
So thank you, Joe, from the bottom of my heart. We are Penn State, and we always will be.

Gerry DiNardo on BTN
expressed his legitimate frustration with how difficult it’s been to talk about how great of a man Paterno was. Listening to him, Ditka, Urban, Saban and others, it was clear that there was real respect there, not just the token “respect shown for iconic figure.” That says a lot.

Goodbye and farewell Coach.
I met him once as a student; he was at once one of the most disarmingly charming and forceful people I’d met. I’m a pretty big guy, and most people when I was in my teens and twenties asked me if I played football. Not Joe Paterno, after I introduced myself he asked me what my major was, who my professors were, how my classes were going. He was just that kind of guy.
I am proud to be a Penn Stater
Because of Joe Paterno. He one of the greatest men that has lived and will be sorely missed. But as Paul Jones said “Heaven hired the greatest coach ever”

Here is the text
It is with great sadness that I am compelled to deliver this message of condolence and tribute to a great man, husband, father and someone who is more than just a coach, Joe Paterno. First, on behalf of Penn State Football, we offer our sincerest condolences to the Paterno family for their loss. We also offer our condolences to the Penn State community and, in particular, to those who wore the Penn State colors, our Nittany Lion football players and alumni. Today they lost a great man, coach, mentor and, in many cases, a father figure, and we extend our deepest sympathies. The Penn State Football program is one of college football’s iconic programs because it was led by an icon in the coaching profession in Joe Paterno. There are no words to express my respect for him as a man and as a coach. To be following in his footsteps at Penn State is an honor. Our families, our football program, our university and all of college football have suffered a great loss, and we will be eternally grateful for Coach Paterno’s immeasurable contributions

any way to archive/get into print these threads? Surely these are a testament to Joe and the Paternos, and future generations need to know about this.

There are a few “shots” pf the site already archived. Not sure how you go get the rest done. If I didn’t have grades to work on today, I’d take the time to look into it more. Maybe someone else can look into it?
Just give them all "B's", Lin,

I am struck by the love that Saint John taught and the instructive meaning of this verse.

R.I.P. Joe
He was a great man. As an alum, I am sorry to say that I was one of the people who wanted him to step down during the dark years. Sadly, we don’t realize how much someone is missed until they are gone. I am disgusted by ESPN and the rest of the media mouth-breathers that have attempted to drag his name into the mud on the day of his passing.
God Bless JoePa. My thoughts and prayers go out to they Paterno family. He was PSU.
No regrets, rju.

thanks 84...
I’m not proud to admit where I stood, but I have felt sick to my stomach since the official announcement of his passing. He embodied all that was great about amateur athletics. The smear campaign by tWWL and others must stop. It is a day of mourning, not a day to revel in one’s smugness.
Joe, we’ll miss you…
My condolences
I didn’t grow up in Pennsylvania, and I didn’t attend Penn State. However, I did grow up with a father who was a football coach. I was probably nine years old when I asked Dad, “Is Joe Paterno a good guy?”
I’ll never forget what Dad said: “If there’s a college football coach worth admiring, it’s Joe Paterno.” That’s the day I became a Penn State fan, and the day I began to admire Coach Paterno. To that extent, I am Penn State, too, and it’s an affiliation of which I am, and have been, very proud.
Now I am a teacher and a coach myself. I learned the most about how to be a man, a teacher, and a coach from my Dad, but considering I was never fortunate enough to meet Coach Paterno, the influence he has had on me is incredible.
The lesson I learned from the past two months or so is to do all I can to protect my students, my athletes, and the rest of those I love from those who would do them harm. I think Joe would approve.
RIP, Coach Paterno. God bless you, the Paterno family, and all of you who feel his loss so sharply today.

This is the type of impact Joe has had on many, most that he never met. An obituary or a 2 minute montage on television isn’t what makes a legacy. Having an influence on people you knew as well as those you’ve never met is what makes a true legacy, and I can only hope that mine is 1% of what Joe’s is.

I found one fund started by Joe
http://www.cams.psu.edu/resources/scholarships.shtml
The Reverend Thomas Bermingham, S.J. Scholarship in the Classics was created by Penn State’s football coach, Joe Paterno, honoring his high school Latin teacher. The Bermingham Scholarship provides recognition and financial assistance to full-time Penn State undergraduate students enrolled or planning to enroll in Greek and or Latin studies in the College of the Liberal Arts at University Park. Bermingham Scholarship are awarded on a competitive basis. See the undergraduate adviser or the associate head for the formal application form, which must be submitted (along with supporting documents) by early April.

You were in a very real, totally illogical sense to many of us, a father and we’ll always love you for everything you did for us. Thoughts are with Sue and the rest of the Paterno family today. I hope over my life I can do even a measurable fraction of the good you have done for the world, but I know I’ll try, I know we all will, your memory will live on through our actions, exactly the way you would have wanted us to.
Thank goodness I don’t have to be around other people today.

My Condolences On Your Coach
He had a long and very impressive career where he did a lot of good and the last three months doesn’t change that. I don’t think we’ll ever see his like again, and certainly not for the same duration. It’s unfortunate that he went out under the circumstances that he did, and I certainly don’t think he got a fair shake from most people (or anyone in the press) but I also think that eventually history will put the man into perspective and realize that the good outweighed the bad by a very, very long distance. I’m sorry for your loss and his family’s loss.

I can honestly say that Joe Paterno was the first hero I had outside of my family. I have always adored his method of Success with Honor and the grand experiment. I am preparing to go to University Park next fall, and I know it won’t be the same without the knowledge that he is there. With that said, I imagine and hope that his essence and legacy will live on for a very long time. May Coach rest in peace and may his family find comfort and peace in this so difficult time.
Very well said
Good luck next year. You will love it.

Believe deep down in your heart that you are destined to do great things
If you do you'll be better than I was when I went there
But seriously, UP is a blast. I’d kill for the chance to spend another semester there. Make the best of it.
Yeah I'm actually one of those kids that "like" going to class
At any rate, thanks for the kind words about UP and I’m really looking forward to it.
Shit
In 2005, about 2 weeks before my junior year, my mother died of ovarian cancer. The third time she had been diagnosed as such since I was 16. I was incredibly distraught and considered taking a semester off from school but decided to try and stick it out. Three things got me through that semester; an awesome girlfriend, my Penn State family that were always there for me, and the resurgence of Penn State football that helped distract me. 2005 went from being one of the worst years in my life to one of my fondest. That would have never happened without Penn State and Joe Paterno.
The one good thing we can all take from today is that Joe is no longer in any pain and is in a much better place. The world is lessened without him, but we can all carry on his spirit and make sure his legacy lives on forever.
Now someone say something funny before I get even more emotional.

To the folks from other schools posting here.
Thanks so much for the kind words and respect. You don’t know how much that means to a football family that is hurting so much. I’ve always been proud to do little things to make Penn State a great place for opposing teams to visit on gamedays – saying “welcome”, “how was your trip?”, “care for a drink?”, “good luck”, etc. The sentiments expressed today just further reinforce that. Ya’ll can be guests at my modest little tailgate any day.

I havent cried as much as I did last night since my grandfather died
I feel like I lost a grandparent, a hero. My best memories of Penn State are as a child. Going to games with my grandfather. He had blue parking so we were always so close to the stadium. We’d open up the back of his Honda station wagon and set up our picnic. It was always cold fried chicken, potato salad and brownies. Then we’d pack up and go inside to watch JoePa and the guys walk through the tunnel. My grandfather always had Worther’s Originals candies in his pocket so we could share them at the game. Those are my memories of Penn State. Nothing but love and respect. That is my Penn State and it always will be.

The world has lost a great man and Big Ten football has lost a founding father who stood for everything that was good about amateur athletics. He was flawed, but much less than most of us. My thoughts are with Penn State and the Paterno family.

In honor of Joe.
Joe Paterno, Barry Switzer, and Jimmy Johnson agreed to meet at a wilderness retreat. Barry showed up at the camp, panting, and blurting out, “Two six-foot timber rattlers (snakes) just tried to attack me on my way here. But, I grabbed one in each hand, bit off their heads, and drank their blood and venom. That’s how tough I am.”
Jimmy spoke up: “That’s nothing! On my way here, two wolves jumped me. I reached down their throats, grabbed them by the base of their tails, and turned them inside out. They ran off in fear of me. That’s how tough I am!”
Joe didn’t say a word, but just continued to stir the campfire with his penis.

Really ESPN....they just ran a quote from a certain former defensive coordinator
WE ARE.......PENN STATE!
Not to totally break the mood, but
the tickytack whistles in this basketball game are completely killing me. Although our inability to keep track of shooters on defense and our unwillingness to make any purposeful movements on offense are even worse.

Yes, both sides, really.
IU is getting the majority of the calls, but I think that’s because they actually share the ball. We just run around for 20 seconds and then set a ball screen for Frazier that they overplay because he refuses to go left.
I thought Chambers was really making strides getting these guys to run his offense, but then recently it’s been totally stagnant again. He needs to chew them out and up the accountability.
I actually think he's being much classier than Saban was.

I have to say he started off getting on my nerves like he always does
But he ended up saying some stuff that I didn’t expect from him. I have to give him some props for making a statement that he didn’t have to make.

Coach K was remembering when he and OUR JOE
met last year. Coach K was saying how remarkable and sharp Joe was. He also said he was crying today and as he was talking about JOE he was getting there again. . .

Does anyone
have the quote where he said about his “legacy” and how he hopes it wouldn’t be about football games, but that he made a difference? I know it’s in his book and I am about to go search through and find it….seems very fitting today
It's on the wall behind his statue,
They ask me what I’d like written about me when I’m gone. I hope they write I made Penn State a better place, not just that I was a good football coach.
"Believe deep down in your heart that you're destined to do great things." Joseph Vincent Paterno 1926-2012
It's not complicated
Pundits think a “legacy” is what pundits say about somebody when they are gone. It is not.
A legacy is the lasting product of a life. Joe leaves behind millions of dollars in donations, God knows how much in money raised for education and other causes, thousands of men he mentored plus all the men and women who played the sports football money supported, his kids, his grandkids, and all of the people who learned something from his example. Compared to all of that, what biographers write about him doesn’t really matter one way or the other.

Listening to Coach K talk about Joe on ESPN right now.
Never really liked him much, but I love him right now.

I just heard it myself now also
I am a Duke fan, but what he said was so profound, and to someone who only meet JoePa once, the amount of respect and the fact that he was clearly getting choked up talking about it, speaks alot about the impact of JoePa on sports, no matter which sport.

Thank You Coach Paterno...
For showing us Success with Honor.
I was fortunate to meet him about 7 years ago and display that picture proudly. Next month my son turns 3 and I can tell him he attended a game coached by the Greatest Of All Time.
Farewell Coach, I look forward to seeing you again one day in heaven.

You know...
I need to vent a sec about something. I married into a Dukie fam. Bro in law attended undergrad, named his son Durham, my Father in Law took up the hoopieball fandom. To all our credits, we’ve all communed a bit in support of the others’ teams. I set aside some of my family’s Maryland support / Duke hate and my BiL set aside his PSU distaste. Even came to the Rose Bowl with me (even had some beers with BSD’s The Mighty Erik ;). And on the family tip, we’ve all gotten pretty close socially and genuinely respect and like each other.
But while a bunch of friends familiar with my PSU fandom reached out with a kind word when our PSU house started burning, I didn’t hear dick from either of these guys. I heard from wifey that they asked her how I was doing but that they didn’t want to engage me directly. Allegedly out of respect. Whatevs.
But last night I’m out to dinner with BiL, for three shared January birthdays and dude says jack. It was so grotesquely odd, that I poked it a little and said, ‘hey, bro, sorry about your Dukies on Sat. That was a tough way to lose.’ Nothin. So steamed, you guys. Bitched to wifey on the ride home & she insists he wasn’t aware yet. Which I’m buying for now. I guess.
Still, and I know this sounds like pandering, but I mean it cuz I’m all cornfused and tore up inside about everything, I don’t feel at all sorry for myself about Joe Pa dying and I genuinely am concerned for any survivors of Sandusky sexual assaults and wonder what they’re thoughts or feelings on Joe are, among other things.

A good friend whom I had taken up to a game this fall called me today and didn’t mention one word about it. Not one. I was pretty steamed myself.
So I can only imagine how you must feel when it’s your BIL.

I talked to my father tonight for the first time since the news was broken and confirmed. We’re both having a tough time fathoming this right now. JoePa seemed immortal. Though he is gone, the lessons that he has taught his family, players, and entire PSU community will never leave us. Education. Success with honor. The world is not a perfect place, but it is a fine place because of people like Joe Paterno. I’ll miss him, but he’ll never leave me. I just hope that I can make an impact on the world like he did.

Goodbye Coach
Joe Paterno has left us. He left the world a better place (despite what some have said and continue to say) and I believe he challenges us all to make a difference in other people’s lives. It was never about win and losses on the field, but about how we live our lives. I truly believe that Coach would say (in a very thick Brooklyn accent) — “what the heck are you people talking about me for — You’ve got much more important things to tend to. Get back to work …”. You will be missed but never forgotten… WE ARE …

God Bless You Joe
In the back of my mind I always wondered and imagined about this day. I always hope it would come many years after his retirement in peace. It is truly ashame that it had to happen like this but I know it still came in peace. Joe said what he had to and went out knowing he did what he should have. He never really cared what people thought so I am sure he didn’t give a f*** what people thought now.
This has been a horribly difficult day for me and I never even met the man. But even without meeting him I know what he has done for my life. As hard as it has been for me I can’t even imagine how bad it is for Sue. God bless you Sue, the Penn State community is behind you.

It’s a sad day.
It’s too bad he didn’t get to enjoy his retirement. My condolences to Penn St. and the Paterno family. May he rest in peace.

Bielema and Alvarez's statements.
MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin Director of Athletics Barry Alvarez and UW football coach Bret Bielema issued the following statements on the passing of former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno.
Statement from Wisconsin Director of Athletics Barry Alvarez:
“Today is a sad day. Joe made a difference. He impacted a lot of people. He made a difference in a community, in a college and in college football. He was truly special and an icon. For someone to continue to do what he did through different generations and for such a long period of time and be effective was amazing. I’ve considered Joe a friend and a mentor. This is sad day for college football and the Penn State community. Our thoughts and prayers go out to them and the Paterno family.”
Statement from Wisconsin head football coach Bret Bielema:
“Coach Paterno obviously did so many wonderful things for a number of years, not only with the success of his teams on the field but the number of lives he shaped. I hope people remember his lifetime achievements. From day one, when I joined the head coaching ranks and was fortunate enough to cross paths with him at coaches meetings and various functions, he was always very engaging and complimentary of the way we did things at Wisconsin and how we played. I enjoyed competing with him at every level. Our Badger football family sends our condolences and deepest sympathies to the Penn State community and the Paterno family.”

I'll miss you Joe
You’ll never know this but you had a huge impact on my life. The way in which you approached football is the model i have used in how i approach my work. Be selfless, walk with a true sense of humility, strive for excellence but own your failings. Be as gracious with your enemy as you are with your friends. And, no matter what the situation, never lower yourself; always take the high road!
Even today, the day after Joe, in thinking of him i feel an inspiration to live my life better. I am listing the ways in which i can be a better person in my community. Wow, i really miss him!
I know we have the statue, but what other tribute can we have for Joe. To start with I’m thinking of cuffing up a pair of whale pants for opening day and wearing a shirt that says “F*%$ the BOT”
well, I don't think Joe would really want a tribute like wearing a shirt that says "F*%$ the BOT".
On the other hand, doing everything you reasonably can to actually fight the BOT and make change for a better would seemingly be wholly approved.
by The JuggerNitt on Jan 23, 2012 12:19 PM EST up reply actions
You're correct
Suppose i just have a bit of saddness thinking that Joe passed with a broken heart. That statement i made about the BOT was a contrdiction to how i said i would like to respond. Thanks for pointing it out!
