Closest I came
was spring game around 1997 1998 when Courtney Brown was there. I remember because my Pap Pap, cousin, and I tailgated near them.
After the game, we were tossing the pigskin in the grass on the north side of the stadium nice and close as it was before the donation things, and low and behold Joe Pa comes briskly walking down from the stadium.
I run to my Pap Pap’s car to get a pen and paper, searching frantically, and as I get back he’s passed by us on his way home quickly (probably for Sue’s amazing pasta dinners).
There’s a picture framed in my Pap Pap’s house, my cousin’s house, and my house of Joe about 10 feet from Pap’s car…my cousin right there next to him, and me just barely in the corner, and that I will take with me forever hearing him tell me to have a great afternoon and thanks for coming out
Yeah I had a similar
Didn’t see him walk by , but after the night Michigan game last year. I had bought a ticket for my brother to go since he was an alum and hadn’t been back since he graduated. Well the game was over and we were headed back into campus to our car, and here there was this uproar behind us as we were headed towards the BJC, and look next to me and there is a car driving through everyone, and look inside it is Spanier driving JoePa, I guess back to his office, or home. I couldn’t believe he was driving right through everyone, and was sitting there just waving to everyone. Was right next tot he car, but could barely see him.

So as the night goes on, my comments might get less and less spelling friendly, so wil give the automatic apology now, in advance for drunj typing.

also
my great grandfather met him at "The Cottage (I believe) restaurant in Lamar…where we used to stop for breakfast every game day going in to State College from Williamsport…and Joe was there once…
Says “To George…thanks for the love, We Are! -Joe Paterno”
I was thinking
How cool woul dit be to start a book with all these little stories from across Nittany Nation. Even these little ones, would be gret to read. Can be something we present to Sue and the family, as our own remeberance of Joe. Only the small, out of hte stadium times people got to meet Joe.

Check out Captains Letters to Joe.
I’ve cried several times reading through them.. Makes you understand the impact he has had, not just in wins.

definitely
and if it’s just you and me here tonight Aries….let’s keep the memories flowing…..
Part of it too feels like it’s the last piece of my childhood…I was born in PA my parents moved to DC area before I was 2 because my dad was in computers and that’s where the jobs were…my great grandfather and grandfather had season tickets before I was born.
I still remember getting to go up to see them all the time, spending whole summers swimming with cousins and being with family…but the best memories were the fall weekends I’d get to go, and we’d load up the car early and go…Great Grandpa, Pap Pap, my dad, me, and my cousin….and how pure and beautiful it all was…
Great grandpa passed away 2 years this July…Pap Pap is 75 and slowly suffering from emphyzema…and it just seems like no matter how many times my cousin and I go back, or dad and I go back…or when it was all three of us this fall…it’s not the same when they can’t go…but Joe was still there this year…now he’s not…and the last piece of my childhood’s disappeared but it’ll stay in my mind forever
wow
that’s an off tangent post if there ever was one
this has been an awful day.
it’s going to be so weird watching them come out next year and knowing joe’s gone forever.
I know what you mean
I was really hoping Joe could be able to go to a game as a spectator, help usher in teh new staff and team.
Freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose - Janis Joplin
that would have been great
really see the continuity through to the new regime.
it was going to be strange either way, but this probably makes it worse.
he was a good and noble man who did boatloads of good for a whole lot of people. he didn’t deserve to go out like this.

that’s the one wife got me for Christmas I finished on the…26th
yep
realized it right away…pretty sure I kept my wife up that night laughing through some of his quotes in it…and even when I wept when I finished it…knowing he wasn’t coaching, can’t imagine reading it now
Litterally just started it Thursday
Not sure I can keep reading it, might have to wait awhile before I do.

I think what most impacted me (and will continue to do so)
is that Success with Honor was something we can all attain. No one will ever surpass what he did on the football field, but each and every day we can be heroes in our own right by following Joe’s example.
So many of our “heroes” live a lifestyle that only a few can emulate. But everything about Joe, from his dress, to his house, to his demeanor, to his values, seemed so ordinary. The fact that he lived such an extraordinary life is a testament to what lies within all of us. Somehow I think that is what he wanted us to learn.

agree wholeheartedly
there’s nothing that stops us from conducting ourselves with honor and to the best of our abilities in our day-to-day lives. we should strive to live up to these principles, even if we fall short from time to time.
Joe left us with a powerful example.

I've always been committed
Oh, you mean the Lynch that can actually play football. Awesome news.
It is a fitting tribute to Joe that several young men have committed themselves to Penn State, and everything that it represents. Joe may no longer be with us on Earth, but everything he helped build at Penn State continues to live on.

Was just talking to my brother
And was saying that it is almost oddly good that all these recruits are there this weekend, so they can see what PSU really means. That when we say that we are a family, it is not just smoke, we mean it. And that is clearly on display thorughout State College last night and tonight. They can see that in action now, and know we mean what we say. Perhaps, Joe still does have a hand in it all.
Thanks Joe.

So, this is a quote from somewhere else, but it's always reminded me of Joe:
“Do better if possible, and that is always possible.”
"Every player we have, someone-maybe a parent, a grandparent, someone-poured their soul into that young man. They are handing that young man off to us. They are giving us their treasure, and it's our job to make sure we give them back that young man intact and ready to face the world."

Been drinking beer
Mainly a Saranac variety six pack that is down to its last soldier, a Black Forest. Debating moving on to the vodka before bed, since I’ll be out of beer.
Like everyone else, I feel like a close relative has died today, despite never having spoken a word with the man. My dad, who never went to Penn State and has spent the last 20+ years living in Tennessee, called me shortly after the news broke. My brothers, one of which went to PSU, have been in touch to share grief. I knew this was bound to happen sooner rather than later, but it is still sad. He lived one hell of a life, and had a positive impact on so many people, that you can’t help but smile though.
Consider this my official declaration of non-support of child molestation.
I know what you mean about a famliy member
I think it is a little harder than a family member in the regard that when a family member dies, there is the initial shock and sadness then a lull till the funeral. Here you are constantly reminded of Joe by watching TV or reading things online. Your constantly living in that shock period for longer than normal.

Whats your brand?
I love vodka, and I am a Stoli fan.

Ketel One
is my vodka of choice this year. Not much of a liquor aficionado though, more a fan of beer and wine.
Consider this my official declaration of non-support of child molestation.
OKay
I like all booze.
I prefer wheat beers, like good belgium beers/
Also like Rhine Wines, Liebfraumilch, and the like.
Freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose - Janis Joplin
I don't discriminate
I just don’t drink enough liquor to know the difference between Ketel, Stoli, or Grey Goose, for example. I know enough that Vladimir is nowhere near the same class.
My tastes in beer shift with the seasons. I’ll do a wheat on a hot summer day, but during winter I loves me some stouts, porters, and the like. Probably why I gain 10 pounds every winter.
I’m not very picky with wine. I don’t follow any of the rules like whites with fish & poultry, etc. Probably because I don’t care for whites. And I have a hard time finding an American red, outside of California, that is worth a spit. Not big on Merlots. Don’t think I’ve met a Chianti I didn’t like.
Consider this my official declaration of non-support of child molestation.
Also really want to dig in on cigars
I’d love to eventually be that old guy that knows seemingly everything about liquor, beer, wine, and cigars.
Consider this my official declaration of non-support of child molestation.
I drink what I like
Sometimes that means a PBR or High Life, or a nice Vodka Tonic, or glass of white.
Don’t care about what goes with what, just what I like.
Freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose - Janis Joplin
A co-worker of mine recently moved here from Canada
and brought a ton of Cubans with him. He brings some along whenever we go golfing. The difference between those and other cigars is uncanny. I’m no cigar expert or aficionado by any stretch, but it’s hard to go back to anything else now.

He was my 2nd grandfather
Ive been going to fall football games at beaver stadium my whole life. My grandfather had tickets since the early 50’s. It was always a family event. My dads seats where right in front of my grandfathers seats and the game was secondary to just being with the ones that I love. I lost my grandfather in late 2010 and last year was the first season without him but some how with Joepa still on the sidelines and now taking my kids to the games it seamed like everything was going to be ok. It was going to be odd next year even if joe would be here but I was so looking forward to having Joe Paterno day next year and cheering him one last time. I am sure they will still have something but it will seam hollow. I will say nice touch on turning the light on Joe’s field tonight.
I will always talk about Coach like he was a personal part of my family because in many ways he was.

Closest encounter with Joe
I had friends who bumped into him walking through campus and at the creamery. But the closest I ever came to Joe was one day in the Spring of ‘08 I was driving to class at the business school and making a right from Park onto University and seeing a BMW making a left onto Park. I looked over and there he was. I was starstruck from my car. Texted my brother and Dad right away. I’m sure he was just going through his normal day driving back to McKee from practice but it is something I’ll always remember. Miss you always Joe
Pic taken vs. Michigan St. in 2008.
My seat was one row from the top.
I've been downhearted baby, I've been downhearted baby, ever since the day we met . . .
Holy crap
I was probably only a few rows down from you. I’ll never forget that day. Me, my dad, my brother, and my brother’s girlfriend spent the day tailgating in the snow before cursing Dantonio in the 4th.
My dad still gives me shit because I told him we had to stay through the end because “it is going to be Joe’s last game.”
Consider this my official declaration of non-support of child molestation.
Remember when Pat Devlin threw a long TD at the end of the game?
There was a guy next to me who said: “See that? Devlin shoulda been the starter!” As long as you weren’t that guy . . .
Can’t wait to get back to QB controversies!
I've been downhearted baby, I've been downhearted baby, ever since the day we met . . .
I never met Joe
but there are a bunch of stories I have from my time there, the following not the least of them: A couple was driving on Curtin and a car pulled out in front of them and seemed to cut them off. The woman was driving and got upset so she pulled alongside the other car at her first opportunity and began giving the other driver a piece of her mind. The other driver, who turned out to be Joe, gave it right back to her, so the husband leaned over and yelled, “Hey, you can’t talk to her like that, she’s my wife,” to which Joe replied, “That’s your problem, not mine!”
I have no idea if this story is true, or if it’s just an urban legend. But I like telling it from time to time, because I enjoy the senior driving angle, and because I can totally see Joe doing it, especially in his sometimes cantankerous later years.

Met him twice.
First, back in ’70 or ’71, when he was just Joe (pre JoePa), in the drug store on Beaver Ave on Easter Sunday morning. He was on his way in; I was leaving. We were the only customers there. I wished him a happy Easter and he smiled and wished me the same.
Second, he attended an alumni event in California in the mid-80’s. We were standing around having cocktails, and I joined a group of people talking with Joe. As I joined the circle, he introduced himself to me (!),shook my hand and took my name. He then introduced each of the other alumni, six or eight of them, remembering each person’s name. It was amazing! I usually can’t remember one person’s name, especially when cocktails are involved. The best part of all of this was how natural and approachable he was, and how relaxed and comfortable he made all of us feel, like we were hanging out with an old friend. Goodbye, old friend…
