Westboro
That garbage group of hate mongerers has announced that they will picket JoePa's funeral. Words cannot describe the utter disgust that I have for these people, who in the past have dishonored our heroic dead, and to think that they are coming to throw dirt on Joe's casket, well.....yeah.
Something I ponder everytime I see they are going to show up and spout vitriol at a funeral service, is what can be done to stop them? I can't imagine the pain that these military families go through when they have to bury their child, and to have these scum there on top is just a horrible crime. Now I know that the Supreme Court has ruled to uphold the constitution, and that these flecks of dogshit have the right to protest at funerals, but I think that an equal and opposite "protest" could also be done as a countermeasure.
The idea: peaceably assemble a group of "protestors" who will go and stand in front of the Westboro trash as a human barricade, so that the family and friends of the deceased do not have to see this type of nonsense at a time like this. And of course, I stress the words PEACEFUL PROTEST. I believe this could be done, with a group of say 20 men, standing silently as these idiots go berzerk. It would show this group that they're shenanigans will not be tolerated, and show support for the deceased & their kin, in an honorable way.
Now the obligatory "hey I'd love to be there and start this but I, er, uh..." I always envisioned being able to go to a public memorial to pay my respects to Joe & his family, but I was a younger man then without a wife, child or job that doesn't permit me to travel to State College to do so. I trust that there are many others who are in the same boat, therefore I'd suggest a student initiative to make this happen. One of many things I can say about our students is that they have done an excellent job assembling and showing support for Joe & our school. I'm not exactly sure where to go with this to get students involved, so I decided to post it here. Thanks to all for the consideration of this request.

All about this
I think the important thing to stress if students do it, or even if alum or anyone does it, IS BE PEACEFUL. Someone said their membership is like 80% lawyers and they are all after lawsuits, DO NOT PROVOKE THEM. Do not even say a word to them as they will instantly skew the words and say something about how we told them to F themselves or harrassed them.
The best thing to do would be to have some upstanding citizens block them silently and not to make eye contact or say a word to them. I’m thinking of a ton of offensive linemen who have come through who could stand over top of them and do this….maybe hbeach can help us here?
They're an entire family of lawyers.
And this is their source of income. They schedule these protests, and then sue everyone for any possible reason. They’ll sue the township/city for infringing on their rights, or for not protecting them sufficiently. They’ll also go after anyone who does anything to them, but I believe the majority of their lawsuits are against municipalities.
I’m just hoping they don’t show. They make a lot of these announcements, but show up at very few. When they do show (based on the coverage I’ve seen lately) it’s usually a very small amount, sometimes as few as 4 people. Sadly, these people also bring their kids and subject them to all this bullshit as well.

I highly doubt they show
they just say they will protest any event to get some pub. Although if they do, I am sure they will be handled properly.
Keep it simple and respectful...
Have the students encircle the Baptist and lock arms so they can’t move or be seen. I’m sure PSU has enough students willing to do it.

You know you've done something profoundly right
when the WBC decideds to protest. I view their protest as a badge of honor.

Exactly . . .
If Westboro hates you, then you know that you’re traveling on the right side of history.

i think this is a great idea...
only problem is, speaking for myself at least, i don’t think i have the self-control to keep it peaceful. To have these scum yelling and screaming and protesting at such an innapropriate venue, i don’t think i could restrain myself, and i am by no means a violent person. I can only assume that assembling students to ‘block’ the protest, while a great idea on paper, would only result in a whole lot of people getting in trouble, and a whole lot more publicity. With emotions running so high, anything can happen, and i wouldn’t blame them.

You would.
They are pathetic, and they are very few. While the messages they tout are enraging, the people themselves are pathetic. They’re just a bunch of attention whores, and I think everyone in attendance would get used to it quite quick.
Regarding the blocking tactic, it’s something that has been done to them before. During soldier’s funerals, the Patriot Riders and other military biker associations usually employ this tactic of placing themselves between Westboro and the funeral services. I’ve even heard of accounts of people creating 20-ft. tall (possibly embellished) angel wings to block them out.

That's cool
I hadn’t heard of any sort of blocking tactics in the past. I would love to see the Patriot Riders show up in State College for this purpose.

Couple Thoughts
I think the students/alumni/fans handled Westboro pretty well after the Nebraska game—while I was walking out of the stadium I saw them encircle the group and chant, We don’t like you, and Jesus loves us to the Westboro people—nothing got physical.
What about trying to organize the Penn State ROTC to be the ones to conduct the peaceful protest. This would be a huge slap to Westboro—to have a military group associated with Penn State standing up to them—and would also help to ensure things stayed peaceful—as this group would most likely be the most restrained and least likely to allow there emotions to get the best of them.
I have also seen at some of the military funerals, different motor cycle groups have been the “shield” to keep the Westobor people away from the family. I know there is the big Harley shop as you come into SC—does anyone know if there is a group in SC that might be able to pull something together.

Human barricades don't really work during protests
The labor unions and Walter Reuther in particular figured this out after trying the idea extensively in the 1950s. It almost always ends with physical fighting.
The difference is Westboro can't attend the funeral.
They have to secure a permit which gives them a specific area that they are allowed to “protest” in. Once the area of their protest is defined, you can set up a barricade around that area and there’s nothing they can do about it. They won’t start anything physical because then they’re liable for lawsuits, which is the opposite of what they want.
It’s been done successfully several times before. There have been times where they’ve showed up (there’s only ever a handful or so of them) and seen what they were up against and just left. If the resistance is organized, they don’t really stand a chance of being assaulted or endangered as the people responsible for the organization are aware of their end goal. Ultimately, they don’t care about Paterno or anything else, all they care about is being able to sue someone for something and make money off of it.

Does "peaceful restraint" include
an A-10 Warthog strike? I could call in a few favors . . .
As a Christian, I mourn when I see this so-called “church” in action. While God can be condemning and judgmental, that is HIS role, not ours. Jesus specifically forbade us from judging one another, knowing we would derp it up.

Yes, whatever happened to the phrase "equally inaccessible to all parts" applicable to SC?
GPS failure?
Sudden appearance of sinkhole on the highway? Five hour traffic delay.
Couldn’t tell right from wrong/east and end up in Pittsburgh?
They finally see the Light and stay home always?
Now, that last would be my best choice.
Amen!

As a group...
We’ve always been able to unite to drown out opposing teams’ audibles.. find out where they are, surround them at a distance, and sing ‘Amazing Grace’ and ‘How Great Thou Art’ and other songs until they realize no amount of vitriol they spew can hurt the love we have for a man who has done so much and meant so much to us as a family.

I used to be an exterminator

I can tell you, that there are tunnels that connect underground boiler rooms throughout the entire campus. If you wanted something to disappear, smother it in peanut butter and throw it in the boiler room under the old creamery. It would be gone before you could say, for instance, ‘Jesus Hates Joe Pa’… just sayin…

Do WE know if....
this group of human feces has JS’s address? We could direct them, via a student brigade to the proper source of their contempt. Doesn’t Jesus hate JS too? I know I do.

unfortunately, Derry...
these idiots would have no interest in directing their propaganda towards JS, as there wouldn’t be anyone that would be pissed off about it… and certainly noone that would be pissed off about it enough to throw a pie in their face so that these low lifes could sue that pie throwing individual.
I do have another question…
Does JS show up at JoePa’s funeral? He had the balls to release a statement yesterday… I wonder if he would have the balls to actually show up at the funeral… i think that could get ugly…

I highly doubt it Derry.
I’ve got experience (cough…cough) with the home monitoring system. The Probation and Parole Dept knows that “his” presence would cause a real shit-storm. If it were a family member’s funeral, then there would be a chance of “him” being allowed to attend. Otherwise, they’ll just tell him to send a card.
He's under house arrest.
...may we compete with fierce intensity, with the gifts that we have been given...
As below......
He is presently on house arrest, but I would make book that he would look for an exception and attend the service; it would be no more of a surprise than his statement to the Press yesterday on Joe’s passing. Nothing surprises me anymore and I am old enough to know better. As far as services are concerned, PSU might offer to have a service for Joe, but I am not too sure that the Family would attend. As far as the Funeral Mass and service are concerned, the Paternos will probably have an “invitation” only service down the road. Otherwise, anyone can do what they want concerning Joe, like it or not. As I write, arrangements are being announced concerning same.

Joe or
Jerry?

So he'll be buried on campus on Wednesday?

No.
There will be a private funeral service Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. The funeral procession will begin at approximately 3:00 p.m. The procession will leave the Pasquerilla Spiritual Center, turn left onto Curtin Road near the Pattee-Paterno Library and travel Curtin Road past Beaver Stadium. The procession will then turn right onto Porter Road and turn right onto College Avenue, heading west through downtown State College. The burial is private.
...may we compete with fierce intensity, with the gifts that we have been given...

And the BoT would most likely encourage the Paterno family to buy a ticket to it.

Don't think he can
he’s on house arrest. Don’t see a judge overturning house arrest for a few hours for him to attend the funeral
Joe was a veteran
He served in the Army toward the end of WWII. So, I’m sure the local American Legion, VFW or Rolling Thunder chapters would be all too happy to help out
There is an organization of veteran motorcyclsts
known at the Patriot Guard who were volunteering escort services for military funerals, and to form barriers between the Westboro hate group and the family of the fallen. They often carried oversized American flags to provide a visual screen so the families wouldn’t see the protestors. Not sure what their status is as they fell out of the news when the casualty rates fell off after Iraq….will research it. Joe’s veteran status and public image would seem to rate such services, if the Paterno family wants them (something tells me they would publically embrace the Westboro right to be there). I recall there was a court case involving the accusation they had gone too far at one funeral and violated the rights of the Westboro “people”, but my foggy brain can’t recall the detail. Bottom line is they CAN be screened to a point, but not prevented.
In God we trust. Everyone else, keep your hands where I can see them
accusation they had gone too far
78, you’re thinking of when the Hells Angels were pulling security at the Altamont Free Concert. C’mon, man, that was in 1969!! Lay off those doobies, bro.

I’ve been at Virginia Tech since 2009 and the WBC has come here to protest twice (following the murder of a student at UVa and the murder of Officer Crouse on 12/8). During that time, the VT community had several different ideas on how to deal with them (counterprotest, men in thongs running around/dancing in front of them, completely ignoring them, etc.). Everyone has different ideas of what to do and I don’t think any of them are perfect. I’d love for someone to get back at them, but as indicated above, they are mostly lawyers that use lawsuits to fund their hate speech.
In my honest opinion, the best thing to do is not pay attention to them at all. This day will be about remembering Joe Paterno. He was a great man. People have been doing a great job over the past few days relaying stories from meeting him. Remember that. Paying any attention to the WBC not only puts focus on them, but it takes away from Joe.
