BSD Donations to THON in Joe's and Sue's Names
PSU_Lions_84, Paige2PSU, and myself are working on a way to consolidate BSD donations to THON in Joe's and Sue's names. We are trying to work out the exact details and will keep everyone updated once we have something more concrete, but the idea will be to amass a lump-sum donation on behalf of the members of BSD. This may/may not be part of a larger effort. Our goal is to memorialize Joe and honor Sue in a way that makes as large an impact as possible and demonstrates the lessons they taught all of us. If anyone on BSD is has comments, suggestions, or would like to help, you can email any/all of us. Our emails are: mark DOT comfort AT duke DOT edu (PSU_Lions_84), paige2psu AT gmail DOT com (Paige2PSU), and ryan DOT s DOT lynch AT gmail DOT com (Me...replace the AT's and DOT's appropriately, obviously).

Just a thought
Did the family designate an organization they wish donations to be made? That would seem more appropriate.
THON and/or Special Olympics.

I'd suggest Paypal
Maybe setup a bank account, if you are willing. Paypal’s $$$ transfer policy:
•FREE when you use your bank account or PayPal balance
When you use a credit or debit card, the cost is 2.9% of the total amount sent plus $0.30 USD per transaction. When you log in, you choose whether you or the recipient covers this cost.
I’ve taken to accepting Paypal transfers for fantasy football, it really is nice for those out of town.
Great thought!
Thanks. You’re not as nutz as others may think.

Paypal
I think has a way to set up to accept donations, but you have to be careful. The folks at Regretsy used it to raise money for a family then got slammed with fees and then told they couldn’t use the money the way they wanted to.
https://personal.paypal.com/cgi-bin/marketingweb?cmd=render-content&contentID=marketing_us/fundraise
Someone would really need to go over the details with a fine-toothed comb!
Thanks!
I will take a look at that.

As treasurer of a small foundation
I’ve tried setting up Paypal for charitable donations. You have to supply a IRS EIN & proof of your 501©3 status, so I think you would find better success with the honor system (<—-see what I did there) donations. Also, I think there might be a $500 withdrawal per month limit on personal accounts, so that would need investigation.

We have a conference call with one of the people
from PSUProud for RAINN tonight. Hopefully he can tell us what they did. We have to have a way to distribute tax exempt forms for donations.

I really hope
That the THON total is ridiculous this year. Not just topping last year’s $9.5 million total…but something j@ck@$$ ridiculous, like $20 million.
How can we do that? It’s $40 per living alum. Assuming that half are worthless louts who agree with the MSM (generous figure there, but for our purposes, let’s go with it…and hope we didn’t major in the same thing), that’s up to $80/person.
We have three weeks. Thoughts?
I agree! It would be awesome if we were able to pull out a ridiculous number this year! It would make quite a statement… maybe it would even make the news.
This is great guys, keep us posted with what you’re planing. We’ll support you in any way we can!

sounds practical
but rainn tried to get $1 per alumni and barely got there. I don’t remember how many people donated but it was waayyy less than 500k. I think there are a lot more alumni than we think who pay no attention to the university after graduation. Also, look at the candlelight service for paterno last night. 40k students on campus and maybe 3k show up? Where was everyone?

I would much rather give money to THON than to RAINN, fwiw. I think a lot of people might feel the same way. Just look at how much we raise for THON EVERY YEAR compared what what was pulled together for RAINN. Just saying…

bit also much props to those putting this together

The problem will be THON's popularity
meaning that I, as well as many other alumni either already gave or planned on giving. Maybe this will cause some to make their usual donation in memory of Joe and maybe will cause some to give twice who already gave. However, I think the numbers would have to be something like $250/person to get to $20 mil
Reporter: Can you give us a touchdown celebration, one that you would get penalized for?
Moye: I play at Penn State. I don’t celebrate.
You may want to check out We Pay
I’ve used them to sell tickets for charity events before and it was easy and the transaction fee is much lower than anything I could find.
Thanks!

I’ll make what donation I can =)

This was one of the sites recommended to us by the folks at Proud to be a Penn Stater. We are definitely looking into this one.

I will help
But my donation will be small since I litterally just sent in my normal donation a few days ago. So I want to honor Joe, but also help out THON.

We are in the process of contacting THON and the Admins here at BSD to set something up
and promote it. Hopefully by tomorrow we will know exactly what form this will take, but we are hoping that we can work with THON to set up a way for the BSD community (and others) to donate and keep track of what has been raised. With THON only a few weeks away we want to move on this as quickly as possible. We will definitely update everyone here as soon as we know more.

Yes, don't they have on-line groups to which you can attribute your gift, but probably have to be registered dancers.
I remember donating on-line one year and your could pick your group. I just did mine by mail after the first of the year, so didn’t need to “pick” a group to support.
I am in.
Great effort and thanks for running with the ball! Let me know if I can help in any way.
.....that which we are, WE ARE;

A big help
would be to keep hitting this thread to keep it pinned. We can do new posts if needed, but keeping this one alive provides continuity to those folks who may stumble across it later on.
BTW, this effort is NOT intended to derail anyone’s giving. Give as the Spirit moves you; we merely want to provide an avenue and incentive to folks who may want to make a cumulative gesture to Joe and Sue.
Thank you all for your interest and offers of help/support. God bless!

But I might make another donation of $4.09

That would be awesome.
We understand that people may not be able to give again, as well. This is also an opportunity for those of us who haven’t.

Just a thought..
Speak with the Rules and Regs, Finance and Corporate Relations Overalls and see if they’ll add BSD to the list of donating organizations on the THON website. Then everyone can visit the THON website and donate through there and all money goes directly into THON’s hands. For the record, I know it’s doable, I’m just not sure if they’ll want to add BSD since it’s not a student organization.
BTW, is THON one of the charities you
can select on PayPal? I have a serious necktie addiction (must have over 100 by now, with more on the way), and when I indulge through eBay (GREAT deals!!!!) using PayPal, there is an opportunity to add $1 for a charity.

There are alumni groups that have official status with THON. I don’t see why they can’t add us. Maybe it’s a little late in the year for 2012, but they can definitley do that for 2013. It can be a annual tribute to the Paternos.

Just a quick update
We are in contact with a THON chair, trying to set up something on crowdrise.com to collect donations. That may not work, in which case people will probably just make contributions individually and then forward their receipts to one of the THON chairs. They’ll update us on progress and we’ll let you guys know. Hopefully the last details will be worked out by tomorrow.
Thanks for all the interest.

Question
I know that many people like to donate through the organization that they were affiliated with while at Penn State. Meaning XYZ Fraternity/Sorrority. Is it possible to donate in memory of Joe and also give the organization credit?
Reporter: Can you give us a touchdown celebration, one that you would get penalized for?
Moye: I play at Penn State. I don’t celebrate.
Yes, it is.

If donating online
There is a section on the page where you select an org to credit.
After donating, you then send an email to the honorary giving email (it’s on the site when you give) and tell them it was in honor of Joe (or whoever you want to honor).
Thank you both

I’m glad THON isn’t that far away. It’s nice to have a Penn State event to look forward to. I’m not sure I have ever been this excited for THON. Here’s hoping we hit this one out of the park!

Searched on PSU Thon History and found
http://thon.org/no_grownups_allowed/thon_fun_facts
Here are the first four:
♦ The first Dance Marathon was held in held Penn State’s HUB ballroom on February 2nd, 1973.
♦ In 1976, Dance Marathon revealed its first ever theme: "Dance for Those Who Can’t."
♦ Beginning in 1977, a little known charity called The Four Diamonds Fund became the beneficiary of Dance Marathon’s efforts.
♦ The Dance Marathon of 1979 included the very first Road to THON Celebration, held to kick off the THON season even earlier, and a move to a new home, The Mary Beaver White Building.
Anyone out there with firsthand memories?
