Guiding Joe Home
Dunno if this has been posted anywhere, but if you aren't able to make it to the prcession for the movement "Guide Joe Home", WJAC TV is going to stream it live (I'm assuming helicopter?)....
http://www.wjactv.com/videos/news/WJAC-722-live-video/vFf4y/
If you can get it from work or wherever you are, could be a very fitting tribute to Joe. It is no surprise to me at the outpouring of support through this time and think this is one more fitting way to honor Joe.

When does it start?
It is easy to go down into Hell; night and day, the gates of dark Death stand wide; but to climb back again, to retrace one's steps to the upper air - there's the rub, the task.

Agreed!
Hearing the newscaster tell stories of when she was at Penn State…and all the other coverage.
I laughed at one point when he referred to it as a parade route…a fredian slip…as it definitley is a celebration of his life!

The woman who’s covering it wow she knows how to make it emotional. Joe Pa’s last trip by Beaver Stadium. Last time in State College. I’m choked up.

I really regret watching this without sound after reading these comments.
Sounds like I missed some moving coverage by the news team.

Dusty in here...
When they said that the family is taking one of the team buses, it got a little dusty in here…
Thanks for posting this!
I for one hope people start cheering.

Trying not to cry at work-
-kinda not working! This is beautiful.
If you can't stand the heat, get out of the Big Ten...or just lose the sweater vest.
I don't know who thought of all this
the blue hearst, using the bus……….damn they’re good. It’s like Oklahoma in my office.

Does anybody else feel like this just hit them
for the first time?
It finally feels like the end.
Kind of like on Christmas night, after all the guests are gone and the food is eaten. You’re at a loss that it’s here so quickly and there’s that bittersweet feeling that you enjoyed it, but it’s over and no matter when it ended, it was still too soon. RIP JoePa.

It hit me today fully
After hugging Jay and Scott after standing before their father’s casket. This procession was just beautiful. WJAC’s coverage was just amazing, state college showed just how special a place it is.

It finally seemed real
when I saw the hearse in front of the blue bus in front of beaver stadium…and knew that SuePa was sitting in the first seat on the bus…a place no one but JoePa has ever sat before.

The modern term is "funeral coach"
I learned that at my grandmother’s funeral.

yep
always made sure on my trips to get a good spot outside the player drop off for seeing joe as the bus approached and seeing him come off and wave to the crowd…..no more
I feel like a big part of my identity
since I was 18 just drove off in that hearse. I’ll be at Penn State again, and I’ll be at games, but it will never be the same.
Agree
I’m sure we all can clearly identify with this; for me it all started somewhere around the fall of 1980. Indubitably, his indelible presence on our individual memories shall be forever cherished.
God Bless you JoePa.

The only time I have felt 'this' feeling is when I've buried family or close friends.
Prior to services, I hold it together.
At wakes, I hold it together.
At the mass, I hold it together.
But when you get to the cemetery…. The finality hits, and I lose it.
God bless and God speed, Joe.

You know what
I’m the same way, except it’s always on the way home from the cemetary.
Usually.
I’m the same way but for me it’s just before leaving the cementary—I can make it through the grave side service ok, but I just can’t seem to leave.
With my mom—it was before they closed the casket—I couldn’t stop thinking this was the last time I was going to be able to see her and had to leave the room before the shut it.

It kind of got to me when they put Joe's casket in the hearse. Im sure theyll be a whole new set of emotions tomorrow watching the memorial service.
But what struck me today watching the coverage, excellent by the way. That when people out there want to claim “they (Penn Staters) just dont get it.” After watching today I want to scream from the mountain top right back at them, “we sure as hell do get it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
Does anyone have a link for where this coverage is available now?
WJAC’s website doesn’t appear to have it up.

There's are shorter things on WJAC. WNEP has two videos (just glimpses) and a third report, but nice.

Can anyone explain the connection with Billy Baldwin? Everyone else makes sense but I can’t figure this one out.
by PSU_sincebirth on Jan 25, 2012 11:29 PM EST reply actions
they had met, the article I saw did not say why
here is an excerpt
Baldwin attended, even though he didn’t attend Penn State or really even know Paterno or his family well – aside from one dinner at the family’s home.
"They welcomed me into their home with a big pasta dinner," he said, according to the website. "I just felt like I needed to be here."

Billy and his brothers
grew up near the Bevilacqua family in Massapequa on Long Island and played together throughout childhood. Mike Bevilacqua graduated in ‘90 and now lives in State College with his wife Stacey and their two kids. Chris Bevilacqua was an All-American wrestler here (see HERE) and graduated in ’86. Billy wanted to wrestle here but didn’t get a schollie so wrestled at SUNY-Binghamton but came down all the time to hang out. He got to meet JoePa and it went from there. Billy loves Penn State, Joe and wrestling (you reading this Rambler?)

Whats Bill's fav color and which type of potatoes does he like?
Just kidding thanks for the info. Its cool that he wanted to come.

of course the media is being shitty about it
some blogs are saying he showed up randomly to get press. MSM are reporting he was at the funeral. He wasn’t. He was at the viewing.
It was a kind gesture on his part and got all twisted around.

Here’s a link to Youtube with it. You don’t need to understand anything else about the movie to find the humor in it.

Audible?
The plan said the procession would head all the way out College Ave. I was about across from the Bicycle Shop when a cop came by to say it was going to turn on Atherton. So everyone who was west of Atherton on W College raced down to the corner in front of the ex-Arby’s to get in position.
Any word on the reason for the change?
I read he was going to be buried in Pinehill, but maybe that was a decoy?
by reedjohnmiller on Jan 26, 2012 2:23 AM EST via mobile reply actions
The cemetery is off Branch Road
so they turned left on Atherton. It is not Pinehill.
Humanum est pati.
Aha.
Maybe it was Joe’s final trick play.
The Philly paper reported Pinehill and all the papers showed the route going out W College. Many people were waiting for the procession there and the cops understood why there was confusion.
How’d you hear about Branch Road? I know of no cemetary on Branch Road, although I may be wrong.
by reedjohnmiller on Jan 26, 2012 3:02 AM EST via mobile up reply actions
I jogged by the "place" this morning.
It’s a cold, wet, rainy day here and as I went up the road I thought I would feel sad and considered not going in. But I jogged in and found the site. Dirt/stones filled in to just below the sod line, no headstone or marker yet, just the spray of white roses (I imagine the ones from the coffin while it was in Pasquerilla) a few single white and blue roses and one red rose. Because of the weather I couldn’t tell for sure but it should have a nice view of Mt. Nittany. I said some words I would have loved to said to the man had I ever met him. Another jogger came up and we stood there together for a bit, chatted, said our goodbyes, and headed off. As I jogged away it was odd. It was like the end of the Grinch… “why this sound wasn’t sad, this sound sounded glad…” Here was a man whose life was dedicated to the pursuit of excellence. A man whose life was lived so simply yet so amazingly. And I thought, this is cool. I’m going to get to come by and visit this place whenever I want. And every time I do, I’m going to have the chance to think about all the wonderful things he did and reflect on how to make my own life more purposeful. And that is just a wonderful opportunity that we who live in the area are blessed with. His body may have departed, but his spirit lives on, and the place where his body is is a perfect display of the type of life he lived. I really believe this is not the end of the Paterno era — it’s just the begiining.

I heard he ended up at a small cemetery in Lemont
Did anyone else read the article? It was about a group of people who heard he would be buried at the Lutheran cemetery and waited there all day. They were wrong, but the writer of the article said it was Lemont.

Correct
Several sources said it would be at Pinehall on W College (apparently some other PSU VIPs of old are there) but Smee here is confirming that it’s in the cemetery by Centre Hills CC, I guess. I guess that’s technically Lemont.
The maps of the route showed the procession doing a go route all the way out College. I was on College west of Atherton along with a fair number of others (mostly students that live in the houses along there) when we learned it was going up Atherton. I wouldn’t be surprised if the family planted some deliberate misinformation (no shame it that, under the circumstances).

But that’s not authoritative.

Wow, usually takes a deliberate posting for Find-a-grave to include a name; often years later.
Explanation – have done family history searches at that site.
