UPDATE: BSD Donations to THON for Joe and Sue
Thanks for your patience while we sort out options for THON donations that connect BSD and Joe/Sue. Given the very limited time before THON cranks, it appears the best option is for each person to make an individual donation, then provide a copy of your receipt to a THON official. He will tally donations and provide us with a total. This approach has the advantages of being simple AND folks who have already donated can have their contributions counted.
The THON official who will tally our receipts is Anuj Updahyay; he is the Overall Donor and Alumni Relations Chairperson for the 2012 THON. His e-mail is donor.alumni.relations@thon.org. The key data points are the amount and a note to the effect that your donation should be linked to BSD. We urge you sanitize any other information that could lead to too much exposure of your personal information.
Couple of other points: Anyone who wants to have their donations linked to BSD can do so. I've received several e-mails from folks who read but don't post, and who want to support the BSD effort. Please do so if you wish. Also, feel free to donate to ANY organization -- this effort is not intended to exclude any other charity that deserves support.
We hope to provide regular updates, and would love to hit $4000 (maybe $4090?). Also, we hope to set something up that provides a venue for future donations from BSD fans to Penn State/Paterno-related charities. Stay tuned!
Aww, look at you. You created a Fanpost! Any content from a premium site that requires a subscription will be deleted once we catch wind of it. If you simply want to share a link, quote, or video, please consider using Fanshots instead. Thanks.

Any chance we'll be able to get updates on the total?
I just made a donation and sent off the receipt and request to have it linked to BSD. I think it would be cool if we can get some sort of updates, either daily, bi-weekly, weekly, whatever so we can see where we stand.

SWHA, good question.
I didn’t deal with the THON folks, but we did get promises of updates, and there may be a way to post a “thermometer” kind of tracking gizmo.
Thanks for the donation!

I haven’t received a bounceback so I probably just added a period the first time. I’ll update if I have any problems. Thanks for all your help and for doing a really kickass job as this fundraiser and tribute!

I'm really interested to see the totals this year
What if donations are down because of the Sandusky scandal? What if Penn Staters and friends rally around the positive achievements of the PSU community? What if Joe’s biggest contribution ends up being that THON donations go off the charts this year and continue to do so?

Fine, telekenisis.
That way I could fight crime without anyone actually knowing who was doing it. Jam guns before they can be fired, lock/unlock cars to rescue people or keep them trapped. Lots of fun stuff! Plus, never having to open a door or pick up a remote would be pretty nice. God I’m lazy.

That one's easy.
at the beginning of your last month before the promos expire, call them up and ask them to re-up the promos or you’re going to switch to their competitor. Most reps will just do it on the spot since you asked. If they don’t, you can still negotiate lower rates by signing a contract locking in a more reasonable price for a year or two. Focus on things like free (or reduced) DVR, mutliple boxes, etc. since that’s where a lot of the hidden cost comes from. “I’ll sign a contract guaranteeing my business for 2 years if you don’t charge me for having 3 boxes” or something like that.
Another factor could be what you subscribe to. For whatever reason, it’s usually cheaper to get all three (internet, cable, and phone) than it is to just get cable and internet. If you’re not going to use the phone line, just don’t connect a phone to it!
I’ve been paying for my own cable for 2 years now, and have yet to pay one month full price.
I just tried the threatening to leave thing.
I was very genuine when I called saying that the cable price was just getting too high, and that I know a competitor offers the same services for $50 cheaper/month. They told me they could give me a new promo that would save me about $15 or that I can drop my equipment off at the local office by the end of the month. This is 1 of the 2 main cable providers.
In the last 6 months, my price went from $105 for HD cable, DVR, internet, HBO & sports package to $168. When I called to tell them my rates have been increasing, the sales rep actually argued with me that my rates have not actually increased. I nearly strangled her through the phone.

Then it might be time to switch.
I know Comcast has retention specialists, where if the customer service rep can’t help you, this person will. But if it’s possible to switch without too much pain, you might as well. My positive experience has been with Verizon Fios. I was able to get a free DVR box and a $25 per month discount by being straightforward and telling them the rates were just too high, in addition to signing a 2-year contract to guarantee my business.
Alternatively, assuming you’re dealing with Comcast or Verizon, ask if you can switch to their “triple play” option and get some sort of promo deal for that. The last piece of advice I’ve come across is to press the key for “wish to cancel/unsubscribe” in their automated answering system, to see what kind of offers they’re willing to give you to keep your business.
Sometimes though, they’re just not going to help you out.
Does flying count as a super power?
My three-hour daily commute via car is getting old, plus gas is heading back up.
I would use my power for good, too. Your pizza was delivered cold? Not a problem! Your pregnant wife is craving pistachio ice cream and pickles at 2 am? I’m your guy!

Flying does count
But clearly you would have to do atleast a little crime fighting, or atleast pick me up and take me to a game at Beaver. We can sit on top of the Press box, hear it is a great view.

In some states
It can be, and depends on which pizza we talking about.
Freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose - Janis Joplin
Mind reading.
I’d love to know what the people around me want so I can give it to them or help them get it!
Good choice
Now you have to also then realize the possible side effects. If you can or cannot turn that off. Meaning, can you look at someone and read their thoughts, or always hear the thoughts of others, which if the case, will turn you incase real fast, since you would always hear everyone else’s thoughts constantly.
Freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose - Janis Joplin
If I could choose,
I’d definitely rather be able to be selective about it, instead of running around crazy like Mel Gibson in What Women Want.
I'm not so sure
I want to know what people REALLY think about me. I’m much more content imagining that everyone adores me.

I have a similar question re: purchase of memorial service DVD
If I send a check to the donor.alumni.relations@thon.org link in a amount greater than $25, can I also request a copy of the memorial service DVD? Is it somehow linked together? I would like to credit BSD and also receive the DVD. Please advise.
I don't think that THON and selling the DVD are related.
The family has not authorized the sale of DVDs of the memorial service. Right now, you can still view it for free at GoPSUSports.com.

Very interesting. Some of the schools further away from central PA have nice amounts.
The more local schools would likely be drawing from much the same donor base as at UP so their totals aren’t often huge.

As a current student/THON independent org chair
Thank you all so much. It’s been a rough year, and it’s wonderful to know that Joe and Sue are inspiring more work FTK.
After the news broke last November one of my THON kids gave all the students in our org personalized Spongebob pictures (because Penn State was going through a “sad time”, and Spongebob cheers her up.) I’ll see if she’ll make BSD a personalized drawing in recognition of your awesome.

No matter what
You students are doing some great things at Penn State with THON. I know I am proud everytime I talk about THON to others when they ask what it is, and saying this is the world’s largest student run philanthropic organization that gives soo much money to a truly worth cause. Really, please keep that iin mind that your work is essential and take every memory with you when your done with it at PSU, and keep those memories with you for the rest of your life.

We're still fighting.
Next week is the last official canning weekend, so keep your eyes open!
Even if you don’t want to donate, as a canner it’s fun to chat with alumni. We’re out there for hours, so any conversation is very much appreciated.

That you can mark your donation in memory of JoePa. I’m going to attempt to do this and also email Anuj about noting my donation with BSD.

I had the same question to Anju
Anuj wrote back that you can simply mark “Joe Paterno — Black Shoe Diaries” and he will link the donation. If you’re writing a check, the check should be made out to “Penn State Dance Marathon.”
$630 so far!

First Post - Thank You
Hi everybody,
I would like to say this is my first BSD post but I have followed your blog and comments almost everyday since linebacker-u shut down. I am currently a junior at PSU and a THON Captain under Anuj. I would like to thank you for your contributions to THON in Joe Paternos name. This year has been remarkably difficult for THON with IT, the passing of one of THONs volunteers and a cancelled canning weekend.
These last few months have been really tough as a student but luckily I have THON and a rather difficult course load to distract me. This years THON theme is “Brighten Every Journey” which I feel is applicable to the last few months not only for the brave THON children, but for the Penn State community as well. Thank you for your donations.
