Greg Schiano Bolts Rutgers for Tampa Bucs, leaves recruiting wreckage in wake (hopefully)

Schiano to Tampa Bay Bucs - Impact on Recruiting? Warning: ESPN article but linked only to substantiate my post. So if you're boycotting ESpin, then don't bother clicking on it. The gist of the article is that Schiano accepted the HC job for Tampa Bay Bucs and his assistants had no clue this was going down. To make matters worse for Rutgers, he stood up his coaches and a couple recruits at Don Bosco Prep to finalize negotiations. While this is basically an eleventh hour defection of the HC in terms of recruiting, does anyone think this will have an impact on any Rutgers commits wanting to come to PSU now? Junny, I'd be curious to hear what you have to say on the matter...

Imagine the field day the press would have

Had he accepted here and then left a couple weeks later for this job.

Pure conjecture on my part:

Mr. Schiano was holding out for PSU as his dream job, and when Joyner and Lubert passed on him, he opened himself up to other alternatives as he realized (1) the PSU opportunity came and went and (2) he had hit a ceiling in Piscataway.

I like to think that you are right

but I really don’t know much about the guy. I don’t know if he has had NFL dreams or if he would have turned down NFL money etc.

Coach Schiano

I am friends with one of his fraternity brothers from Bucknell. This individual confirmed a long time ago that PSU was Coach Schiano’s dream job. I am not a huge fan of the BOB hire though I do wish him success. I think it a travesty that Coach Schiano did not even get interviewed for the PSU job considering his relative success at Rutgers. This in my opinion shows the incompetence of Dave Joyner.

May the JVP way......success with honor forever be the Penn State way.

When was the last time your friend spoke with him or you spoke to friend

I’m sure PSU was a lot of people’s dream job prior to November. I wonder if he still felt the same way after everything went down.

I'd have to ask......

but the fact Coach Schiano wanted to interview and was turned down by Joyner shows to me he still held the position in high regard. As for the Schiano haters…below…..there was a great previous post on what Coach Schiano actually did for the Rutgers programs. A bunch of NFL execs also most have thought he had something to offer since he is now coaching the Bucs. Would have taken Schiano in a minute over BOB (who may I remind you all has NO head coaching experience)!

I Don't Really Think So

To be honest, I have no idea why people wanted Schiano as the next head coach. Solely from a football perspective, aside from a single season, this guy has done nothing to impress me and the fact that he’s in the worst conference in the country only solidifies my opinion. Yeah, Rutgers Football was far from being even considered remotely competent, but that was ten years ago and he’s regressed every season since 2006. I’m sure he’s a nice guy, but I guess what I’m saying is, I’m happy he isn’t our new HC.

OK

First, as a proud Bucknell alum, I say, way to go, Greg! (Though I’m not thrilled with the way in which he left.)
Second, where do we start the “Scrap for Rutgers head coach” petitions? :)

Ray Bucknell!

We have a representative in the NFL… But yeah… this is horrible timing for a lot of people. I do like the idea of scrap at New Jersey State.

I always laughed

at Penn Staters and fellow “townies” who said there was nothing to do in State College. Try going to Bucknell and living in Lewisburg for 4 years. We could get into the Bucknell football games for free, but instead we would pay for tickets and drive up to PSU games!

Shout-out to you Bison!

Pass through Lewisburg to/from North Carolina to Williamsport.

Needs more traffic/speed limit enforcement. It’s too pretty a little town for people to speed through.

I student-taught in Milton!

I did a math lesson using the football team roster, and even had my students write notes to the PSU players. Kyle Brady wrote back. Ah, the memories!

I gotta say

I grew up in New Jersey and would love to see Scrap become their head coach.

If they ever tell my story let them say that I walked with giants. Men rise and fall like the winter wheat, but these names will never die. Let them say I lived in the time of Bradley, tamer of offenses. Let them say I lived in the time of Paterno.

NO WHERE!

I’d be terrified if we have to recruit and maybe even play against him. I hope Scrap ends up as the head coach of a storied West Coast program.

But if he does get the job, good for him. He deserves and and I will have a new team to root for on Saturdays.

Is there ever a good time for a coach to leave?

Before recruiting.
After recruiting.
Summer.
Just before the season.
During the season.
Just before the bowl game.

These guys are villified whenever they leave.

I think it's the shock that is upsetting to people.

If Schiano had played the drawn out dance with Tampa, the Rutgers fans could begin to get their mind around the issue. But this came out of nowhere.

true

probably a reason as to why Schiano grabbed that sumbitch as fast as he could too

Makes me regret

being okay with the Pats winning. Could have used some man hours for this one.

by Kevin Powers on Jan 26, 2012 5:08 PM EST reply actions

Two things

One – It’s actually better he did it now than 5+ days from now. Though the window is small, at least this gives his committed players a chance to quickly look around and bolt if they don’t want to play for a Schiano-less Rutgers team.

Two – The Penn State perspective. As I mentioned elsewhere, we are very thin, number-wise in the Class of ‘12. Depending on how things shake out with a couple of guys down the stretch, we’re looking at 4-6 openings right now. That seems like a lot, but we have offers out to other players, some of which will probably grab them quickly, unless they’ve since been rescinded, which probably isn’t the case.

The players we’d take a look at include OLs JJ Denman (former commit), Chris Muller (former target, weird recruitment as it pertains to PSU), LB Quanzell Lambert, WR Leonte Carroo, and a couple others. Additionally, we’d look at some of the uncommitted guys that were high on Rutgers including Devin Fuller and the remaining Don Bosco kids (Darius Hamilton, etc.).

Would/will any of them flip to PSU? Tough to say with only five days. Like Kevin said, it’s going to take a lot of man-hours to do this. Unfortunately, we won’t have a full-time HC to devote to this, but fortunately, the remainder of the staff had pretty much closed the book on ’12, with a couple of notable exceptions (Cox, Morgan). They could put a full court press on some of these kids and possibly get a couple. We could certainly use another lineman or two, so watch the Denman tracker. If he did flip, it would be his fourth commitment to three teams (two to Penn State, one to Wisconsin, and one to Rutgers…).

Bradley?

Really hope Scraps gets this job, especially as I live about 1/2 hour from Rutgers stadium.

by Keith Platt on Jan 26, 2012 9:51 PM EST reply actions

I thought Sciano said he was not interested in PSU

During this search process. Maybe he used to want it, but not now and I have to think that this wasn’t totally out of the blue for him. He had to have been talking to his agent (and his wife) for a while about the possibility of the NFL.

I really hope we can get some of their recruits.

Scrap would be good for that job. I’ve heard they’re looking at the Temple guy.

by reedjohnmiller on Jan 27, 2012 12:53 PM EST reply actions

Then Scrap at Temple, then

Although, they have some decent personnel. With his knowledge of the players currently on the team, he’d have a shot at beating us. Although, it would give Joe a laugh up in heaven…“Heh, I never lost to Temple.”
