Quick Recruiting Update - Last Weekend Before NLOI Day
I'll have more information on each of Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of next week, in addition to any new commits that happen to come our way. But a quick couple of points heading into the final non-official Class of 2012 weekend.
- Skyler Mornhinweg is still a Penn State commitment...for now. Speculation is all over the place that he's committed to Florida, but this has not yet been confirmed by anyone I would consider a reputable source. UPDATE: NOW it's official - Mornhinweg has decommitted, flipped to Florida (maybe he didn't get the memo about where Urban Meyer is coaching these day).
- Evan Schwann (PA DE) is the lone visitor this weekend. He does not hold an offer as of yet, but I would expect a commitment exactly :02 after he receives an offer.
- If Mornhinweg does in fact decommit, and Schwann receives his offer and commits, our numbers stay the same, with 19 commitments and 84 scholarship players.
- As for the Rutgers fallout, I've heard Penn State is targeting some of their players, especially linemen, but don't expect there to be too much fallout. I've also seen that the recruits are banding together, so it's entirely possible that no one gets poached.
- The top two remaining targets, Demetrious Cox and Wayne Morgan: Cox is headed to Wisconsin this weekend and will then decide early next week (before Wednesday, as of now, is the plan) between four Big Ten team (PSU/OSU/MSU/Wisc); Morgan is a late player for Penn State, but it appears we're targeting the NY safety-to-be.
- All of the southern targets are out, including the Alabama LBs (Hankins, Harper), the MLK boys (Moore, Whitehead) and Carnell Boyd.
Again, we'll have more next week. Until then...

What happened to Reeve's
I’m sure something was posted on here but I missed it. Please dont say the Snake Charmer from Columbus has something to with it.
Reeves is currently amassing Twitter followers
that’s why he has not chosen a school yet.

The saddest part

So we're striking out then hunh?
Well, sounds pretty crummy. But, hey, we got six commits last weekend and filled some desperate need positions.
Thanks for the update
Any chance we go to Cox’s house at 4:30 am and convince him not to visit Wisconsin? /end sarcasm
So what happened?
I thought we had 4 or 5 guys visiting this weekend? No visit from Morgan? Everybody bail out on us? Or what?
I heard Cox
is going to announce his decision on some radio show on Tuesday

Its Official..
Skyler Mornhinweg de-committed and is going to Florida… Philadelphia Inquirer and GatorCountry.com have both confirmed it, and ESPN is running it… So, yea…

I instinctively read this as ..
…“ESPN is ruining it” instead of running lol.

While I did like Mornhinweg's poise on the field
I really like the idea of having someone who cried tears of joy when first walking into Beaver Stadium. Welcome to Happy Valley, Steven Bench!

Correction
I should have said “Welcome to the Depth Chart, Steven Bench”
Hoping...
He doesn’t make me cry when he’s on the field like he did when he posted that pic of Beaver Stadium. I was a Pei Wei having lunch when I saw it. Almost ruined my Shrimp and Lobster Sauce…almost.
We've always been underdogs.
In order to succeed as an underdog, you need heart and determination. Looks like he at least has the heart. Although it is a little bit easier to root for underdogs when you have an established person already at that position, which unfortunately we don’t.

Wow.
Seems like Florida is stacked with depth at QB. Why would he want to go be 4yr backup there. He could compete for a starting job here next season, and would likely have it handed to him 1 way or another the year after.
With our new offensive coaches who are getting a lot of hype, this stings.
Skyler and PSU vs FL
The staff at PSU want him at safety and probably told him so. The staff at FL told him they want him at QB……until he gets to campus and then they tell him his future there is at safety.
Steven Bench Tweet

We’re gonna go down as ones who dont shy away from adversity. Tough kids that know how to win”
Seriously, how can ya not love this kid?
Bye Skyler, enjoy your FL career as waterboy

Strikes me
as the prototype Joe player who would go through a wall to win a game
I like all of that except your ending sentence
I wish Skyler all the best at Florida. That he is not headed for PSU is dissapointing but who cares. He’s an 18 year old kid trying to make an incredibly tough decision.
I love the kids that come to PSU and join our family and harbor only well wishes for those that choose to go elsewhere. Caring is creepy

Skyler to FL doesn't make sense
FL already has 7 freakin’ QBs on there roster, 1 senior, 4 sophomores, 2 freshmen.
Who knows what 4-5 stars they bring in behind him. I wish him well and all, but I’m guessing this kid will transfer out before long. Either that, or once they get him on campus it’s “kid, yer future on this team is at safety”.
Any reasons to be out for the boys down south?
Too late in the game or no interest?
It would have been nice to see a couple more recruits to join Bench in opening doors down there.

Most likely too late in the game.
But still, offering and getting contacts down there is a great first step.

Thanks and agree...
This year is such that recruiting victories might not be securing every commit desired, as much as opening doors for 2013, 14 and beyond.

McGloin and Bolden get Benched
I love this kid already. The way he has reacted to being a part of the PSU family is exactly what we want and need right now in the program. I don’t care that he was a rice commit. This only tells me that the current staff understands that Penn State is about the student athlete.

Morgan
Does anyone know if he’s visiting? He had been to PSU unoficially. Sounds like he’s interested but can’t find anything but this…..
Wayne Morgan (r.) had been nearing decision between Syracuse and UConn, until he was recently contacted by Penn State’s defensive backs coach. “I’m thinking about changing my mind,” Morgan tells the Daily News on Tuesday.

Scholarships
I would almost rather let this year come to a close as far as recruiting goes. If I am correct we would only have 15 scholarships available next year if we max out this year. Why not save 3-4 for next season and try to go after the big dogs. If we can get Brenaman early we could be players for a big class.

Who is Trae Elston?
and why are two of seven ESPN experts predicting he’ll go to Penn State? never heard his name in regards to recruiting

I think Elston was an ESPN publishing error.
Never seen that kid on our radar before.

I'm pretty sure Rittenberg mistook him for Morgan.
But then again ESPN never makes a mistake right?

Paul Jones
Why
Would Neal and diggs go to osu and sit. I am having a hard time watching urban snatch up all of these recruits. I can’t believe he has scholarships left to give. If we can only have one win next season I hope it is against osu. By the way have never heard of els ton either. It is ashame Morgan isn’t interested I don’t think cox is pus bound

CHANCE FOR SURPRISES ON LOI DAY?
Any chance that PSU might just shock the world with a couple of unexpected surprise signings on LOI day? If so, who might they be?
Doubt it.
Cox’s decision should be the only major excitement for PSU fans. Possibly one or two other commitments, but nothing that would shock the world.
Just finished recording a podcast with a couple of special guests. We discussed this exact topic, so stay tuned…
