Awesome!
I’m really looking forward to that fight. From what I’ve seen so far, Davis seems like an absolute beast. Makes it so much better that he rep’ed PSU at the weigh in.
Did Rashad Evans wear any MSU gear?
Does the winner have to take home the Land Grant trophy?

Not that I cared what the girlies looked like.....
"The truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help me God."
This is great.
This should be front page’d if we’re going to have an open thread for Fox on UFC 2 tomorrow night.

And by tomorrow night, I mean tonight. Whoops!
Also, mixed up the title of the show. Yikes.

Balls
Not a great first round. AND the first commercial is this guy:

"Believe deep down in your heart that you're destined to do great things."
THREADJACK
Don’t know if anyone’s still on here, but since this is kinda like the open thread of the evening, I had to share.
I go to trivia every week in Frederick, MD (those of us who live closer to DC from this city actually refer to it as Fredneck, but that’s another tangent). Anyway, when you win one week, the team that wins gets to pick the category of the first question of the next week. We won two weeks ago and picked college football; the answer to last week’s question was USC. We actually won last week too, but they had forgotten the category we had actually picked (Empire Records) and ran with college football for the second week in a row.
The question? (I’m paraphrasing here): Name which school that, in 2001, beat Ohio State for the home team coach’s 324th victory, passing Bear Bryant in all time wins.
I can’t make this stuff up. It was awesome.
As DawsonPSU10 said, it’s not divine intervention, it’s Joe intervention.

Fredneck for the win
Great town.
Great town to make fun of.
Ironical town to make fun of when one hails from Wboro, Gcastle or Htown ;)
I can’t believe you had that question. Where do you trivia there?

We do trivia at Belles'
near the fairgrounds. It’s done by Pour House, which we like, so why we trek up there—and it’s one of the few that’s on Saturday nights (and early enough, at 6:30, that you can go do something else afterwards if you want, or you can be a lazy boring person like me and go home afterwards).
We couldn’t beleive we had the question either!! So awesome. And my sister went to college in Frederick, so she definitely can attest to its funness to make fun of :)

Update?
"Every player we have, someone-maybe a parent, a grandparent, someone-poured their soul into that young man. They are handing that young man off to us. They are giving us their treasure, and it's our job to make sure we give them back that young man intact and ready to face the world."

Unanimous decision by points
Hard to call it a domination, it seems. That being said, I didn’t watch so I have no idea how it really played out.
Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.
In short, Phil got his ass beat.
He’s not on Rashad’s level yet. There is tremendous upside there, though, and it was a good learning experience for him. Jones/Evans going to be fun.
Rashad is really good
just the way he moves and is constantly on the attack. I didn’t see this specific fight (though I had all intentions of doing so, something came up), but Phil, as you said, just isn’t on that level yet.

This is true
The ass-beating part. But I heard the announcers saying this about the learning experience too. And given Phil’s background and limited experience, I can definitely see him improving and even learning from this beat. But the other thing I saw was a hand speed discrepancy that is not going to improve with a thousand more matches. I also think I saw only one takedown by Phil. But other kudos go to his not getting knocked out and to him continuing to press action. That he got out of two separate mounted crucifxes without getting face-pummeled was kinda amazing.

Pretty much. Huge step up in competition for him.
I’m no MMA diehard, but this was a huge step up in competition for him. He seemed a little tentative and surprised that his usual stuff wasn’t working.
Good learning experience.

I don't know anything about this sport
But is it common for the fighter to wear a uni with his college on it? Because if it is not, this is super awesome.
Crap, now I have to become a UFC fan.
Bent But Not Broken
No, it is actually very uncommon
I don’t think I’ve ever seen it before. Usually if they have anything on, it is apparel with their sponsors on it.
I DVRed it
and watched it this AM. DVR cut off after the 3rd. I’m no MMA expert, and haven’t been in any fights outside of grade school, but it looked to me like Phil was getting winded by the end of the 3rd. He was on defense just about every single time they were on the ground, which will wear you out. Phil also wasn’t very efficient with his punches/kicks. He seemed to be wasting a lot of punches, throwing them from outside his range, just as a constant attempt to keep Evans outside his reach. Again, tiring himself out. His kicks looked lazy and awkward, twice getting caught by Evans and leading to a takedown, and once ended up throwing himself off balance, again, leading to a takedown.
Again, didn’t see the 4th or 5th, but he didn’t seem to be conditioned to go the distance in a 5 round contest. Evans has been there before, and seemed to be more calculated in where he was expending his energy. Phil hung in there against a guy that is pretty dang good, just seems like he needs more experience and training.
Consider this my official declaration of non-support of child molestation.
The 4th and 5th rounds were the same.
He had a little life in the 5th round, but he was just out of his league. I think he expected to be able to take the fight to the grounds if he had trouble boxing, but Evans out-wrestled him there too. Once he realized his ground game was useless, I think he fought defensively the rest of the fight. I don’t think it was conditioning as much as it was a fear of leaving himself open. Evans kept counterpunching and landing effectively, so he was pretty much left hoping Evans would make a mistake or he could catch him.
It is easy to go down into Hell; night and day, the gates of dark Death stand wide; but to climb back again, to retrace one's steps to the upper air - there's the rub, the task.

I agree . . .
Phil’s athleticism and reach kept it somewhat competitive, but what struck me, even in the early rounds, was his lack of hand speed. If Phil graduated from a SEC school, I suspect you wouldn’t even see his hands.
I agree he looked winded.
His punches looked noticeably slower from the third round on. He showed promise (hell, getting out of two mounted crucifixes is damn impressive). His biggest problem is that he just isn’t well rounded enough yet. He hasn’t quite learned the difference between wrestling and an MMA ground game and his striking is sloppy.
Really, this fight was a very good thing for him. Evans is a fantastic fighter. To go the distance in a 5 round fight with him is a great sign, and he’ll learn a lot from the outcome of that fight.
