Friday Late Night OT: Favorite Winter Hobby
There have been a lot of very emotionally charged threads this week. And for good reason. But it's a slow sports night so I thought I'd make a lighter thread to take people's minds off of everything that has gone on over the past week.
So to the OT topic (an oxymoron?[I love parentheticals!]):
Most of us are from the north. Almost all of us have at least spent time in PA. And while it has been a mild week, weather-wise, it's that time of year where wintery weather usually shows up. So what do you do to pass the time when the weather gets gross? Do you take advantage of it and go out skiing? Or maybe you like to cook up some comfort food. Do you warm up with a nice mixed drink and watch an old favorite movie or catch up on TV? Discuss your favorite cold weather activities here.
Personally, I've never been a big fan of snow. A such, when winter weather comes around I love to try out some new cooking recipes and watch some of my favorite movies, but I'm always looking for new ideas to pass the time. Looking forward to hearing what everyone here does during the wintery months.

work more, drink more
get those hours, cut those years
Sandwich is the best
Bread use aside from making
Russians stand in line
Well, I'm trying to avoid making my work my life
But realistically looking towards the future, it’s a possibility.
Can’t argue with ‘drink more’ though.
You can't have one without the other.
The bottom line is I need a winter hobby.

very true (can't have one w/o the other).
We have little tranquility but tons of tranquilizers.

BSD is my new favorite winter activity
Seriously though, I cook a lot more—crazy dishes that have you starting to cook at 9am to have dinner on the table at 7pm. So worth it.
wow, what do you cook?
And can I have some?

Come to the tailgates and eat!
Last Saturday I made duck and porcini mushroom soup (from scratch—sorry no pic—also note these aren’t my pics as I can’t link to Facebook for some reason), roulade of peking duck with morel sauce
, and iles flotanttes for dessert.
Not sure what’s on the menu tomorrow.
Bake cake.
Eat cake. Make paper cranes, throw them at my roommates. Procrastinate on homework.

I wish I was friends with you in college
Cake is delicious.
Cake is delicious.
My roommates never go without cake or brownies for more than a week. I consider it an apology for all the paper crane throwing.

Man you make me jealous.
The disputes with my roommates were usually bigger than crane throwing. And I assure you that none of us ever had the skills to make baked goods to heal our friendships.
I recommend baked goods as a problem solver.
Baking gives you power. No one ever wants to start crap with the resident cake provider.
I’ve been spoiled with very relaxed roommates, though.

If it weren't for your occasional FB updates
I’d be certain that you’d have fallen off the face of the earth. (To be fair, my time here has been limited as of late, so you could be much more active than I realize.) How’s life?

You know that moment
where you’re like “OH HELL. I’M GETTING OLDER. I’M GOING TO GRADUATE EVENTUALLY. OH CRAP. WHERE’S MY TEXTBOOK?! HOW DO I USE THIS? WHICH WAY DOES IT OPEN?”
I had that. So I’ve been trying hard to focus and make the most of my education and whatever. Outside of the occasional interesting weekend I really haven’t had a life. How are you? Still rocking the ukelele?

Yes, I had that moment.
Then I realized I was a business major, and laughed and asked the barkeep for another drink. (Apparently I had stumbled across the only 1880’s saloon in State College. Who knew?)
Life continues otherwise. And yes, I’m still rocking the uke – this evening, in fact, I’m wailing away on Darren Criss’ “Sami”, except substituting the female’s name to fit my own life’s situation. Oh, the joys of being old and slightly inebriated on a Friday night. :D

When I turn 21 I'll have to find that saloon.
That song is great for quiet venting purposes. And I do not approve of you calling yourself old, though I do approve of the inebriation.

If it's a Friday or Saturday
I’m likely watching the webcast of the Icers game. (Oh yeah, I’m that exciting.) Otherwise, I’m probably learning/attempting to “perfect” a song on the ukulele.

Since we've yet to get remotely close to a hard freeze this year,
I’ve decided to take up mosquito abatement.

Well for me
In the winter is swim season for the local high schools. I am a swim official and get to ref some meets all around. So I get to watch some good swimming and get paid to do it, all while reminiscing of my own swimming past, and inwardly mocking people when I could have beat them back int he day with my times.

Oh snap
we need to talk swimming then,
Your stroke/event and times…stat!!

Distance Free
Started as a backstroke/IM, switched to distance free my jr year in high school and never looked back. My favorite event in college was the 1650- I’m insane. Of course as a 39-yr-old fat chick now, it’s a little tougher! (I mainly swim with senior citizens though, so I still look fast!)
My high school
Actually didn’t have a boys team, so I started one. Wasn’t official until a few years after I left, so was very hampered in what I can do in a meet, b/c of no exhibition rules.
I was a stroke guy, Breastoke as my event, actually had the record at my high school for a few years, was beaten but barely, and if it wasn’t it would still be up, for awhile. Had 4 records in all, not bragging, just happy i got there without actually ebing able to compete against other.
I hated distance, and think all distant swimmers were out of their minds, but usually in great shape.
Started swimming at my gym on and off, and do feel like you do, swim against old people and blow by then, is oddly satisfying. Even though I am horribly out of swimming shape, still rather gratifying.
FWI, I love talking swimming. Anytime you want to, let me know.

The first poster stole mine...
with beer brewing (and baking bread from the spent grains).
Another one I’m just picking up is building model RC airplanes for flying in the summer.
And another great winter hobby is reef keeping. There’s tons of equipment and upgrades you can tweak during the winter months. Of course they do call reef tanks a glass box that you fill with an endless supply of money, but if you do actually learn and put in the work, money never looked prettier.
PG friendly hobby?
Well, then I guess I’d have to say training/running my dogs through the snowy woods.

I go to every PSU sports event I can
Mostly hockey, but in winter, also wrestling and some others. Occasionally basketball, but I’m not really into basketball. I’ve never been to a PSU track meet but I’d like to go. I don’t feel right being a single older man going to see women’s gymnastics. I feel like people will stare at me as a pervert. Men’s gymnastics is also impressive, but I’m always in fear I’m going to see a man break his neck and die. Lacrosse season starts soon. Very excited about the direction of both men’s and women’s programs and men’s volleyball has started too.
I go to a lot of movies.
I’d like to get back into cross country skiing but the weather hasn’t cooperated.
I should brew some beer. I’ve tried it a few times with varying success. Is there a club in Centre County?
Break out the machine and head to SSRTA in Gillentown.
But it’s more fun if there’s snow on the ground.
