The Tale
Schwan was the lone visitor at Penn State this weekend, and made the most of his trip. He finally received the offer that he had hoped for, and committed thereafter.
Schwan was recruited by Larry Johnson, who hopes to feature the defensive end in his DL rotation.
Outlook
Slightly (ok, moderately) undersized, Schwan fills the spot left vacant by another Harrisburg defensive end. Schwan has a high motor, and was able to push kids around in high school, but will definitely need to put some weight on before going up against 300+ pound Wisconsin linemen.
Iowa fans were excited ($) about Schwan's potential, but the dream to play for nearby Penn State was too much. He held out for the offer, and chose the Nittany Lions. He has been relatively unknown on the trail, due to a series of injuries that forced him to miss his entire junior season. His senior season, though, was a different story, as he helped lead Central Dauphin to a state title was named to the Pennsylvania All-State team.
Though it likely didn't factor into his recruitment, Schwan is a teammate of top 2013 target Zayd Issah, an all-over athlete that will be one to watch next year.
Schwan's commitment puts the Class of 2012 at 19 members, which totals 84 scholarship players.
Welcome to Penn State, Evan!

Welcome, Evan
I like this kid’s potential.
If you are tempted to fight fire with fire, remember that the Fire Department normally uses water.
Lots to like:
High motor, good nose for the ball, tenacious. Don’t like that his first move is vertical — he needs to fire off horizontally against B1G O-linemen.
Redshirt him, feed him, get him into the S&C program — he’ll be ready for 2013.
Welcome, Evan! Look forward to seeing you in the Blue and White.

Get him swinging that sledgehammer!

Welcome, Evan
I think this kid would have gotten lots of attention if he had not been hurt as a junior. A redshirt will do wonders for him.
Just sit him down in West dining commons every night
and tell him to go to town, and then lift every minute he’s not in class. He could be a beast if he can keep his quickness.

Ironically, I was just thinking about them earlier this evening.
Old Man MainLion called to say the W-B Times Leader reported that Skyler decommitted.
Not surprising, considering Bench “took” his spot. I look forward to seeing Bench develop as a Lion.
"Is that a shot at me? 'cause that makes me want to read it all the less."
How am I the only one who has rec'd this?

Do we need a weight-gaining coach?
Because I’m king of the freshman 50, baby!

When I was there
it was the “Freshman 10”. Inflation.
I realize highlight films are just that......
highlights. However, in every tackle, the ball carrier or QB went backwards from where the initial contact was made. Hope he puts on some muscle and dominates in a couple of years.

So am I the only one who thinks this kid screams “project offensive tackle?” Long, light on his feet…put some weight on this kid Robert Gallery-style and he could be something
Due to his scronyness
I worry that would just take too many Baconators and Big Macs
I am seeing him more as a QB or hero next year

QB or Hero?
Uhhhh I could see him lining up at OLB if he can’t gain the weight for DE, but he’s just not fast enough to play outside the box. Maybe tight end, if it turns out he’s got decent hands.
My apologies
that was a failed attempt at humor.
I do like the tight end idea though. Also like him at DE, but we are hopefully pretty stacked there already.

CD (Central Dauphin)
Has a very decent weight lifting program which helps explain why they are excelling in several sports at the state level. Whenever we walk our dog there on Sunday mornings there are students there working out (something we never did in high school way back when.)

Denny Dut is the man.
I really enjoyed my four years in the weightroom there. I don’t know much about their new coach from Bloomsburg who is holding down the weight room with Dut now, but I can only imagine it has improved. The renovations they did on the gym have been impressive, too.
I was a senior on Coach Mac’s first team as a head coach. It’s pretty wild to check around that website and see how some of his foundations have really blossomed, like the community connections program. I can’t say enough great things about that guy and be sure to know anyone that comes out of that program is going to be a great kid.
That kid who tackled Talor Battle.
The first thing that popped into my head when I saw this kid's name:

"I guess we had a couple of Catholics praying for US!" - JVP, after the down to the wire win over Notre Dame in 1987
Dude looks like a big LB
I think he would be great at LB as long as he keeps his quickness. He looks to have a good eye for the ball.
Maybe in the 3-4
He’s not gonna be a LB in the 4-3.
/would love to see PSU run the 3-4
"Every time you go to that cook-off you get drunk as a poet on payday!"
I, too, would love this,
but the 3-4 is so hard to pull of at the college level. NFL teams have problems finding a dominant NT to make the 3-4 go ‘round, which means they’re even rarer at the collegiate level.
Though, to be fair, PSU has been pretty good at pumping out DTs…
Well
there’s different types of 3-4 schemes. The Wade Phillips 3-4 doesn’t necessarily require the prototypical run-plugging NT, because you’re using him to shoot the gaps. But you’re right, finding a good NT from the prep ranks isn’t easy.
"Every time you go to that cook-off you get drunk as a poet on payday!"
It wouldn't be too hard to blow a kid like this up to 350 lbs..
But there are some serious ethical issues that come with doing so. I’m fine with Casey Hampton making the choice as an adult to eat himself into the nose guard position. I would have issues with pressuring an 18 year old to do the same. There’s a real possibility that a bunch of that weight will never come back off. And that weight would likely bring future health concerns along in its train.
So it seems that a collegiate 3-4 would be more realistic following the gap-shooting model which you suggest. It really is an intriguing idea for many reasons. Hell, if any program ought to want to get four linebackers on the field, you would think it would be ours.

We want to get 11 linebackers on the field.

Alot of comments about his weight.
He is playing (in high school) at the same weight Maybin played DE for us in 2008. I’m willing to give that another shot.
"Today we have experienced a great loss. This loss is incomparable to what we gained from coach Paterno." - Mike Wallace
True, but I don't recall Maybin
being 6’6". I think Evan can easily hang another 20 pounds on that frame, without losing any of his motor.
Thoughts?

Maybe, but with a dedicated S&C program, he can add on to that long frame.
For comparison, the scholarship DEs in 2011:
Jack Crawford – 6-5/273
Deion Barnes – 6-4/245
C.J. Olaniyan – 6-3/249
Kyle Baublitz – 6-5/275
Eric Lattimore – 6-6/277
Sean Stanley – 6-1/246
Pete Massaro – 6-4/264
Jordan Kerner – 6-4/241
Shawn Oakman – 6-7/260
All of them that are 6-5 or taller are at least 260. I’m not sure what LJ and/or Craig Fitzgerald will want them to play at, but adding weight is almost a certainty here.

Based on that
(and thank you for pulling that up – very helpful as a visual)
He has plenty of time to get jacked before having to play, as I hope a number of those guys will be destroying Mr. Miller, Robinson and Vandenberg for the next 2-3 years.

Wait, wait, I can solve this!
Hmmmm, so you are 6’3" and over 260 lbs but less than 264.
AmIrite? What’d I win?

Good guess.
I’m actually right around 260-265. So I’m just ballparking it.
I know this is what all fatties in denial say, but I carry the weight well. Most people peg me around 210 or 220. Still, I need to shed some weight. Cameras don’t help things at all, and we’re going HD here soon. /sigh
Logic works again!
About weight: I hear you. I’m only 5’6" but carrying about 30 extra lbs around the middle. Wife is starting me on salads for lunch, and I need to get out and walk at lunch time.
My Dad lived to be 84 eating scrapple, peanut butter and butter on bread, lots of pasta, etc. Mom just turned 85 in December (her birthday is the 11th, Dad’s was the 26th, while Joe’s was the 21st . . . . ) I like my genetic chances.

I'm not saying we should shoot to keep him there,
and I certainly expect him to gain. I’m just saying I don’t think he’s is automatically 50 lbs from being a candidate to play DE. At this level you can be a productive end in the 230-250 range if you are talented, you don’t automatically have to start looking for a new position.

Not disagreeing, Boss.
If we HAD to play him, I’d use him as third down-and-long DE, to rush the QB and/or provide coverage in the flat when a LB is blitzed.

Ya gotta wonder how many
6’5" + guys on the squad are going to be catching balls in practice.
