JoePa's shoes or similar style

Does anyone know the style name (or similar style) of the black and white Nike shoes that JoePa wore on the sidelines? I recall watching a show on the Big Ten Network several years ago about how the original style was discontinued, for the public, but Nike continued to make them for Joe. With that being said, I understand that I won't be able to find the exact style but I'd like to get a similar pair and wear them around as sort of a tribute. If anyone has any recommendations and where to buy them, I would appreciate it.

Maybe we can convince our new hero Phil Knight to bring them back for us

I was looking for the same but the best I could come up with is the NIKE5 Streetgato. Check out nike.com they have a customize option they call “iD Shoe”. I selected all black leather with the white swoosh and laces, $115 plus tax and shipping and 5 weeks for delivery.

I’ve been coaching soccer for my daughter’s rec. league and these will be perfect. You may be able to find a different turf shoe on their site more suited to your needs. Good luck.

The model was Air Commander

Nike stopped making them ~5 yrs ago. They are featured in the following story:

Matching cleated models are still available. Closest non cleated match is probably Nike Cortez. I think Jesse and PSUinBOSSton are more knowledgeable. Perhaps they will chime in.

It’s a pretty dead on match for 1980’s versions, the Commanders existed only for Joe Paterno, unless you want cleats.

I've heard that Bill Snyder

Kansas State’s coach has hoarded the Cortez for years! I found this link which which says, “Bill Snyder would trade his Nike Cortez tennis shoes for a pair of Crocs before he’d play a nonconference game in Eugene, Ore.”

Buy the Air Diamond trainers for about $60

It is what I order to wear on the sidelines. They look pretty damn similar and you can take off the baseball tongue extender if you would like.

I love these.

Thank you for posting them… I’ve seen them at 50 bucks now. The baseball tongue extender makes them look more like Joe’s.

Just google the name, and call a rep. They carry them. If you still have trouble I can possibly order them and have them shipped to you although I am not sure I can get them at my contract price if I do it that way.

Retail is $60....

if you have a Nike contract at your school you can nab em for about $30. I have three extra pair that I ordered “just in case”, and it cost me the same as if I bought two at retail.

Great question!

I was wondering if, with the blessing of the Paterno family, Nike would produce a “Paterno Spirit” replica shoe for us.

Swap out the black laces with white on those Air Diamonds, roll up our khakis, and we are good to go!!
