Around SBN: Trent Richardson Interviews Fellow Brown Brandon Weeden

So far, nonresident students represent only 24% of Penn State's total paid acceptances for next fall's freshman class. That's down from 36% at this point last year.

Overblown

While it is highly likely that the attractiveness of PSU to the outgoing HS senior this year has been reduced, there are still plenty out there. Penn State UP has had increasingly higher and higher academic standards for admission. I have to think that these our of state students are typically not going to branch campuses. Penn State will most likely look at nudging the standards line to accept more out of state students in an effort to maintain the financial structure. They probably haven’t moved the line much so they see the drop in
paid acceptances. It will most likely work itself out as we move through the summer.

In theory, it should work itself out

My worry is that if this “stink” doesn’t wear off past this year, we could be seeing the university forced to lower their admission standards to pick up the slack. If not, the only other alternative is to raise tuition which would only force more potential students away.

OMG.....

Lower standards? Does that mean that PSU will be accepting more students from New Jersey? Please keep reading as the MrsPharmer is a NJ native, so don’t attack me, all of yous Jersey Kids. I do really like Jersey after all.

The standards at UP have risen considerably since my days

If they need to drop a bit to get us back on track as the stink subsides, there are worse things. I doubt they will drop to the level when they let me in.

I think this has more to do with the price than "the stink"

Out of state tuition is very high at Penn State and the economy isn’t great. Insofar as there is a Sandusky effect, it’s likely to be very temporary.

This

The whole Sandusky business might be sort of a wash. It’s not good press, but it was a ton of press, was it not?

Speaking as a guy who paid out of state tuition and as the brother of a girl who did as well, this probably has more to do with the economy than anything else.

Agreed

I think it has more to due with the economy and the fact that most people coming out of college these days are saddled with tens of thousands of dollars in debt and they can’t find a job. Just like the housing bubble of a few years ago, the tuition bubble is about to pop.

This.

Two seconds of looking say that 2010 average tuition costs for a four year public school is around $8k. That out of state number is three and a half times that, which is a much harder sell to parents and kinds nervous about jobs than it was five or ten years ago.

and Penn State is higher than average, no?

As an out of state student, I don’t know if I would have been able to afford to attend now. I’m still paying off my loans as is.

I think it's the second highest in the country

For both in and out of state tuition for a public school. The cost of attending Penn State is pretty obscene.

...may we compete with fierce intensity, with the gifts that we have been given...
