2012 Football Scholarship Chart, per BWI

BlueWhiteIllustrated.com put out their scholarship chart today. The numbers match what we outlined in our position previews earlier this year added with the 19 commits expected to sign Letters of Intent, but the players aren't exactly spot on. Expect some of the 14 wide receivers to move to DB, and anyone on the line is liable to switch positions at any time.

Also note, only 84 of 85 scholarships are being used. That last 'ship could go to any walk--on, provided there aren't any last minute Signing Day commitments.

Wow, safeties

Not many safeties. That has to be a big concern going into the year. Hopefully, there’s a wide receiver that will be converted to safety. That’s a pretty empty spot the depth chart. Running back as well, but if our offense is going to be like NE’s then that might not matter so much.

by psfann on Jan 31, 2012 12:21 PM EST reply actions

Backs

I’m kind of happy there’s not a lot at RB as long as health is not an issue. For years it’s sucked that we don’t get “big name hype” outside of Ki Jana and LJ because guys were constantly platooning and not getting a lot of yards…

I think Redd could put up very similar numbers to those guys if given the chance and he can stay healthy, especially if BOB’s offense forces team to spread us out. Imagine running from a four wide set on first down after 2/3 passing plays and having the middle of the field wide open for him instead of 9 guys in the box.

by va2pennstate on Jan 31, 2012 12:29 PM EST reply actions

As long as we bring in a solid player

I think 1 scholarship back per class is enough. Realistically, only two RBs need to see playing time. I am not too familiar with the rules on Redshirting. Can we Redshirt Lynch but pull it if Redd or Dukes get injured?

Also, only two full backs, with on being a Sr. is bothersome.

by tbs5005 on Jan 31, 2012 12:39 PM EST up reply actions

I believe the answer is yes

Redshirts aren’t technically assigned until the end of the year if I remember correctly. So you can pull the reshirt and press him into action if necessary. I think Morelli did that his freshman year after Mills and Robinson both got knocked out in one game.

Thanks

And thank goodness that Morelli had to have his redshirt pulled. Otherwise, DC17 would not have led PSU to the 2008 B10 title.

by tbs5005 on Jan 31, 2012 12:47 PM EST up reply actions

That makes me wonder what kind of scouting star rankings did these guys have coming in? Was Michael Robinson and Daryll Clark rated higher than say Zack Mills or Anthony Morrelli. Is it just a matter of how these guys mature and develop, or can we actually identify Steven Bench was a 2/3star player that can only hope to be an average QB?

by Wokjab on Jan 31, 2012 3:13 PM EST up reply actions

Clark and Mills were 3 stars

Could not find Robinson. From what I remember, he was at least 4 stars, if not 5. Also interesting to note (if I remember correctly given I was 14 or 15 at the time), Larry Johnson was not considered a top prospect when he first came to PSU.

by tbs5005 on Jan 31, 2012 3:42 PM EST up reply actions

Yes.

Technically, everyone that hasn’t used a redshirt is a redshirt player until they go into the game. One snap, and the shirt is burned. Hypothetically speaking, we could redshirt Justin Brown this year, but then burn it in the fourth game.

by Jeff Junstrom on Jan 31, 2012 1:08 PM EST up reply actions

I thought it was a percentage of snaps

or rather, games. Like if player X comes in as a frosh and only plays a couple downs in the first week and then never sees playing time again, he could still claim a redshirt.

I think you are thinking of medical redshirt

"Today we have experienced a great loss. This loss is incomparable to what we gained from coach Paterno." - Mike Wallace

by PSUinBOSSton on Jan 31, 2012 3:23 PM EST up reply actions

percentage of snaps was the old rule

Once you play, your redshirt is gone unless an injury occurs after those snaps. Then the percentage of games played comes into play.

Medical Hardship Waiver

If a student-athlete suffers a season-ending injury or illness after competing in a limited amount of competition during a particular academic year, he/she may qualify for a medical hardship waiver which would allow him/her an additional season of competition during the five-year period of eligibility. To qualify for a medical hardship:

(a) the student-athleteโ€™s injury or illness must occur in one of the four seasons of intercollegiate competition or subsequent to the first day of classes in the student-athleteโ€™s senior year in high school;

(b) the injury or illness must occur prior to the completion of the first half of the playing season that concludes with the NCAA championship in that sport and must result in incapacity to compete for the remainder of that playing season; and

© the injury or illness must occur when the student-athlete has not participated in more than two contests/dates of competition or 20% of the institutionโ€™s scheduled contests/dates of competition in his/her sport (whichever number is greater).

The eligibility of a sixth year resulting from injury after using the redshirt requires a specific appeal and approval

I also hope we see him in the Wildcat sometime this season. He a great athlete, so we should use him widely.

From what I understand,

Belton is exclusively with the wideouts. And I like that.

by Jeff Junstrom on Jan 31, 2012 1:09 PM EST up reply actions

TEs

Is there any change a TE will convert to another position? 6 TEs is already a lot, and if we pick up Breneman next year, that will make 7. Seems like a waiste to me. Wilkerson played DL for DeMatha. Any chance he switches?

by tbs5005 on Jan 31, 2012 12:37 PM EST reply actions

Yea.

I would (figuratively) put my next paycheck on one of the incoming TEs to move, likely Wilkerson.

by Jeff Junstrom on Jan 31, 2012 1:10 PM EST up reply actions

Position changes

Thoughts on players switching positions? My guesses now would be for incoming frosh: Golden to CB, maybe Williams to DB as well, Wilkerson to DE, and one of the DT’s to OL. Then maybe shift Kenny back to CB, Kuntz to Safety, and have Belton be sort of a hybrid WR/RB and take snaps with both in case of injury.

Also, just looking at measurables, we could probably run some 3-4 looks (or Ravens/New England hybrid 3-4) type looks with some of the talent we have on the Dline. Baublitz, Daquan Jones, Oakman could all be possible 3-4 ends (assuming they can handle the technique) and Hill your NT. Hodges, Olanyan, Royer all could be pass rushing ends with the rest of the LB’s filling in roles.

by skarocksoi on Jan 31, 2012 12:39 PM EST reply actions

Williams and Golden to DB...good call.

Wilkerson, agreed. As for the RSJR wide receivers, this might be their last chance to do something before they get gently nudged to the side. The Class of ’13 is sitting at 14 guys, but how many other opening would there be if some of the non-contributing juniors step aside? Next class could be big…

by Jeff Junstrom on Jan 31, 2012 1:11 PM EST up reply actions

I'm assuming

that some of those Juniors who aren’t set for extensive playing time(a guy like Kuntz) would be given the option of switching positions instead of just riding pine and getting shoved out early. Otherwise, I would expect a “come to Jesus” moment between BOB and those guys similar to what Chambers and Alexis had, and maybe if they’ve already graduated they move on.

I'm on the Internet cause I'm an Internet thug.

by skarocksoi on Jan 31, 2012 2:59 PM EST up reply actions

That's almost assuredly what will happen.

If players like Kuntz, Moseby-Felder, Mike Wallace, etc. don’t see any meaningful time in their fourth year with the program, they’ll likely have a “carefrontation” (did I use that correctly?).

by Jeff Junstrom on Jan 31, 2012 3:14 PM EST up reply actions

Overall talent

There’s definitely enough there to keep Penn State at that 8-4/Outback Bowl level. I feel like every year in college football you have a handful of national title contenders, a handful of teams a notch below that, and then 20-30 teams that are pretty similar that could go anywhere from 10-2 to 7-5 based on schedule, coaching, injuries, and luck. I’d put us in that last group.

Kickers

I know what happens when I assume, but I’m assuming barring something befalling everyone’s favorite mango rum loving kicker, that Ficken would redshirt this year to put an extra year between him and Fera. And it would also then allow the coaches to throw a scholarship at a kicker in the 2014 class, which should be fairly large, who could then redshirt during Ficken’s senior year.

I can’t believe I’m contemplating how to best manage kickers on the depth chart, spring practice needs to hurry up and get here already!

I am a Penn State Nittany Lion, and I played for the legendary Joe Paterno, and more importantly, I am a man because of it. - Lavar Arrington

by LegalLion on Jan 31, 2012 1:27 PM EST reply actions

If Fera stays healthy

There is no reason to use Ficken. Fera is a much better kicker. If I were BOB, though, I’d start looking for a stud kicker next year. If we get him, great. If not, wait a year and grab the best we can. I think having two scholarship kickers is a good idea. At the begining of the year, we saw what can happen the kicker isn’t playing up to par.

What are the chances of Zordich moving to Hero?

Afterall, its the position his daddy played. Everytime he made a special teams tackle this year, I was wishing he was back on defense. That kid just seems like a playmaker, may not be the fastest guy on the field, but he never stops hustling. But is he realistically too slow to be a DB?

by NittanyNutz2 on Jan 31, 2012 1:52 PM EST reply actions

He has the hands of a DB

I kid I kid. The more times Zordich gets to hit people the better the game IMO.

I'll admit this thought is half-baked --

I should be working on next year’s budget — but had to peek at this chart.

Anyway, how risky is it to try to smooth out the huge swing in skollies? This year we could hand out 19, but (as noted above) only 14 next year. Then 24 (!) in 2014, followed by 16 (meh).

My understanding is the NCAA ceiling is 85 (+3 in the B1G), with no more than 25 in one class. Assuming the 2014 crop of potential players is average, is there any strategy to awarding only 21, and rolling the other 3 to add to the 16 in 2015?

That 11 in four years’ time concerns me . . . .

Actually I think its no more than 85

but with 25 (+3) in a class. You can’t exceed the 85 total though. But as I posted above, those RS Juniors have probably already graduated (or will have graduated after this season) and may be asked to move on if they wont be seeing any significant playing time. And if you look at the list above, there are a lot, especially on the O-line. I can’t imagine all of them will get starting time and I’m betting there are underclassman who are above them on the depth chart. At that point its a question if they just want to ride the pine with no shot to play or move on after graduating.
