BOT Nomination Ballot
I received my BOT nomination ballot today, filled it out, and submitted. While my first 2 votes went to conventional candidates, my third was given to someone who is not an official candidate: Joseph Vincent "Jay" Paterno, Jr.
I'll preface with the obligatory "I didn't think he was the greatest QB coach" line, but over the past few months he has really shown his true identity, and his father's fingerprints are evident in the way he presents himself. Honestly, I could not think of a better candidate for Penn State at a time like this. I know that there are many qualified candidates who are running, many of whom would be excellent choices for the BOT, but Jay has given his life to Penn State, and I wouldn't mind seeing that continue, provided he is willing.
Now, I am fully aware that the chances are he would graciously decline the nomination if he were chosen as a candidate, but in that case I feel it would be a nice symbolic gesture to show how much the Paterno family is really appreciated. And on the off chance that he does accept the nomination, best of luck to him - and the existing BOT as they sweat possibility that the son of the man they so calously fired may become one of their colleagues.

So who all is running?
Taliferro, Lubrano, that one guy who used to be on the board (forget his name). Who else?
I think you are thinking of Novak?
Some guy at PSU Hershey Med Center just discovered a virus that eats cancer. Where were the CNN trucks for that? THON will probably break $10 mil this year. Put that on "Outside the Lines".
Yes, Ben Novak
Trustee from 1988-2000
Also nominated Casey Coyle
I didn’t bother nominating Taliaferro since he already has surpassed the threshhold of 50 nominations to be included on the ballot.

The three nominees on my wife's and my ballots:
Mr. James Cefalo (1978)
Mr. Franco Harris (1972)
Mrs. Suzanne Paterno (1962)
Humanum est pati.
I used my 3rd vote on Jay as well
Also nominated isKaren S Weaver
If you can't stand the heat, get out of the Big Ten...or just lose the sweater vest.
Jay can't be elected.
You can’t be an alumni trustee if you were a recent employee (<3 yrs) of the University. That being said, I would nominate him if and when he becomes eligible.
Well, if you really want to piss off Surma and his ilk,
Richard Trumka would fit the bill.
"I think what the university did to him was grossly wrong" -- Mike Ditka
I nominated Jay
Nominations are nice, but mostly irrelevant because any serious candidate (Taliaferro, Lubrano) will far exceed the 50 nominations needed to hit the ballot.

I'm going with Chris Hornack
Because he’s a friend, he’s from Hazleton, he occasionally stops by the tailgate, and he’s a hell of a nice guy.

I nominated Jay
because FUCK YOU Board of Trustees.
If I had been able to nominate FUCK YOU, I would have done it. However, you need to enter a graduation year, and I didn’t know FU’s.

The son of the current Director of the Blue Band is running,
Orrin Richard Bundy III. If he’s half the man his father is, he’d be a fantastic choice for trustee.
Here's the problem
too many good choices, too few open seats.

Exactly
Hopefully the best will keep their interest through the next two voting cycles as well, but I’m not terribly optimistic about that.
I am a Penn State Nittany Lion, and I played for the legendary Joe Paterno, and more importantly, I am a man because of it. - Lavar Arrington
How has noone nominated
Sue Paterno. Could you see her walk into a BoT meeting, as an elected representative of the school? Classic.
Freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose - Janis Joplin
Went with Smee
and Mrs. Smee’s choices for this time around. We can catch up with Jay in a few years.
How do we pressure the business/ag groups to replace their current lapdogs?
"Make haste to reassure us, I beg you, and tell us that our fellow citizens understand us, support us, and protect us as we ourselves are protecting the glory of the Empire.
"If it should be otherwise, if we should have to leave our bleached bones on these desert sands in vain, then beware the fury of the Legions."
The business trustees are appointed to the BoT by the BoT
That's what makes it such a good setup.
So if we can get "our" trustees elected,
they can affect the appointment of others? That works for me. Saves us the trouble of having to organize and enforce boycotts.
