I know many of you are pissed off...
but I’m personally trying to look forward, not back. So let’s welcome BOB to the Penn State family.

Totally agree with this statement.
Kerry Collins nailed it!

100% Agree
He gets my support. I also won’t forget how poor our offense has been in the last decade when not led by senior QB’s named Clark or Robinson and how we seem to put together 1 solid O-Line every 4 years. Let’s give him a chance.
The offense was better when Clark was a junior...
"Every player we have, someone-maybe a parent, a grandparent, someone-poured their soul into that young man. They are handing that young man off to us. They are giving us their treasure, and it's our job to make sure we give them back that young man intact and ready to face the world."

Agree, but making the point that it doesn't need to be a senior QB.

Penn St. picked a good one the last time. Who knows, BOB may be around for a long time.
It’s about Penn St. and rallying behind that first of all, might as well get behind BOB now.

Good point, mjtig
Is anyone on here old enough to remember the reaction to the Paterno hiring in 1966? Obviously it was a different world in a lot of ways, but was he easily accepted since he had been here for 16 years already? Was there a group wanting to go outside of the current staff? DerryPharmer, are you old enough to recall the Paterno hiring?
Local Susquehannock tribesmen and French fur-trappers
in a rare display of agreement, unanimously supported the hire.
so, by the reaction I'm not sure if you are not warming up right away lol. LSU guy here....
and I got behind Curly Hallman, Gerry Dinardo, Mike Archer, as I did Saban and Miles when they were hired respectively (seen the bad as I have the good). It was about getting behind LSU first and foremost. Get behind your team is the point. He is your coach.

This sight has been unreadable the past 2 days. You can choose to live in the past or look forward to the future. I choose the latter. Best wishes Coach O’Brien!

I'm somewhere in between, Buch.
BOB is selected, for better or worse, so I will try to swallow hard and support him/the new staff. BUT, I still despise Joyner/search committee/BoT for the arrogant and heavy-handed way of dealing with this whole situation. Because of that, I reserve the right to make BOB the lightning rod for any future criticism for failure or praise for success.
Waiting-and-seeing has helped me so far; I’m holding to that in this circumstance.

Real nice, Mik'e.
Real nice. Am I now among those whose opinion is no longer welcome here? I’d hoped to have earned a little leeway to deviate from the party line, especially because I feel I’ve gone out of my way to reasonably articulate my view and justify my reasoning for it.
Don’t worry, I’m not going to hang around this thread like a turd in the punch bowl, raining on everyone’s parade of good feelings. Of course I want to see O’Brien succeed, because it means the team and program are succeeding. But for me, welcoming him today with open arms is tantamount to welcoming our new, alien overlords.
HAIL ANTS.

I see my comment was justified
I said nothing to provoke your comments, but you found it necessary to not only insult my own opinion (the outrageous idea of welcoming BOB) but then play the victim, falsely accusing me of doing exactly what you just did, when I call you out on it?
Grow. Up.

Maybe it was
I can see where it seemed like I was insulting you personally – I didn’t mean it like that – it was out of frustration and anger generally, not directed at you. I wasn’t “playing the victim” as much as asking for, as ‘84 put it, “some slack?” Get me? The whole Simpsons reference at the end was an attempt to bury the hatchet, not ratchet up the tone of the rhetoric. Please accept that my emotion here is driven only by my love of PSU, and I’m not trying to call you out or marginalize you. Sorry if it came across that way – I realize why I did.
The presser’s about to start. We cool?

I’m pissed off at the admins also, but BOB is NOT the guy to take it out on.

At the end of the day I will support BoB because Penn State is my alma mater…but if he fails I will expect his tenure to be short.

Vandy did beat Arkansas...
and then decided to forfeit at the very end of the game.
But your point is made. That hire seems to be working out exceptionally well considering what any coach at Vandy would face given the climate before he got there.
I know one stipulation of him going there was a negotiation for heavy investment from the school (I went to grad school there). Honestly, now that everyone gets a degree, I think a lot of smart athletes are starting to consider how much their degree has to stand above others. I think that’s starting to also really start to work in Vandy’s favor. You get to play in the SEC and you get a good (and very expensive) degree to fall back on.

In the short run....
you’re going to have to let this guy have his shot. This is the 100th time I’ll say it so, “TB is not going to be the HC, the days of coaches ataying at one place for 10 years, let alone 61 years are long gone and the PSU FBHC job is now officially a stepping-stone job….this guy will either be fired or quit to go to the pros (”His dream job") before his gig is up". It’s the way of the sports world now and PSU, regardless of what some may think, is in it up to their eyeballs. Good luck to all involved.

I think this will be a stepping stone job only
If we don’t let a coach have the automony etc. that they need as a HC and pay him the going rate. If others want our HC, that’s a good thing. If we don’t pay him or give him the (appropriate) stature in the university, the coach will jump.
If you are tempted to fight fire with fire, remember that the Fire Department normally uses water.
It's on!
"Every player we have, someone-maybe a parent, a grandparent, someone-poured their soul into that young man. They are handing that young man off to us. They are giving us their treasure, and it's our job to make sure we give them back that young man intact and ready to face the world."
-J.V.Pa.
And here we go...
Updates if you’re not following the CiL event above, or on Twitter.
LJSr. is in the house (a good sign), and Josh McDaniels is reportedly joining the pats for the playoffs, possibly signifying BOB has left the Pats (also a good sign, two days left for in-person recruiting until a week-long dead period).

Oh yeah, which is why I'd dislike it if he stayed on as a QB coach

He was never the only playcaller.
The double OC thing was a shitshow. As far as recruiting, that’s tougher to evaluate. But it just seemed to me that we’ve had a string of QBs who would constantly make the same mistakes and never get any better. MRob was an exception because they ran a lot of read and option plays that year, but then they went away from that kind of offense (even though they’ve recruited a number of QBs with dual-threat abilities). Really Clark is the only guy who’s grown as a player in the current iteration of our offense.
IMO they did get better, they were just never great.
The mistakes people complained about are mistakes I see by every player at every level – even from Peyton Manning.
I disagree with that.
I see two and three-star QBs all across the nation who can consistently hit an open guy across the middle. Who know when the pocket is holding up and when it is collapsing. It’s because their coaches put in a practice regimen that teaches them concepts in a simple manner, and reps the throws so that they can make them.

Not as long as we have a conference.
That fact right there will make a difference. Also, I don’t think our fanbase is quite so populated with the unique type of jackassery that we see with ND.
Has nothing to do with it.
There’s a great chance we won’t see a coach last here more than five years again for a long time. Either because they bolted for the NFL or a program willing to pay them more, or because they sucked. As ND shows, there’s a low chance each of those will be a good hire. Continuity and family become harder and harder as more and more guys cycle through. ND isn’t special any more. They’ve lost their mystique. That’s the problem with coaching carousels.
Look at the NFL. The Steelers have had three coaches in like forty years. Other teams cycle through them constantly. No team has been more successful than the Steelers.
Notre Dame has way more built in disadvantages than we do.
Primarily the size and scope of the institution.

If you are tempted to fight fire with fire, remember that the Fire Department normally uses water.
I guess I'm not clear on what you mean then.
When you say “Notre Dame”, I’m thinking “fall off the map because of a string of bad coaching hires, and simultaneously doomed to failure because of expectations that are impossible to live up to.” I think Notre Dame dug its own grave long before they went through Willingham and Weis. It’s their whole environment that brought that on them. We have a lot less of that to deal with. There are some similarities—I can see where you’re coming from, but I don’t think the two situations can be equated.

I like his answer for that
how can I ask a player to be committed to Penn State if I don’t stay committed to my current team
Because that team doesn't need him for shit. They operated without an OC for a year
before they ‘gave him the position.’ This team has been at a huge disadvantage for the last two months. There’s a TON of work to be done, really quickly. And he’s going to try and ‘work us in.’ It’s BS. Penn State deserves better.
I would expect the same from any other coach that is still coaching
Any NFL coach is going to stay on til there team is done. You never see a coach leave in the middle of the playoffs.
That has nothing to do with his point.
He’s leading by example, following through on his commitment. It sucks for us, but you can’t blame him all that much.
Maybe he’s just waiting until the Pats hire McDaniels to jump ship and saying “the right things” until then.

Either way...a great move.
Along with tears in my eyes with Joe’s mention, had me applauding the LJ announcement.
Reports are that LJ had his things packed, expecting he was going to be let go
It sounds like LJ had no idea he’d be asked to stay. That makes me think Joyner had nothing to do with it.
OK let's play that out..
Had Joyner committed, one way or another, to Johnson or any of the other coaches, that would have thwarted O’Brien’s ability to assemble his own staff. I chose to believe this move was one of those intense discussions O’Brien referred to.
If he just got hired yesterday
I doubt he would have had time to take the test. I mean, he’s got 15,000 things going on and he’s trying to do them all. I think he sounded good and looks like things are going in the right direction. I wasn’t sold on him before, but that definitely helped in moving forward.
He used the phrase "past couple of days" at least once.
And was officially hired last night. And said he’ll take the test “today or tomorrow”. You can’t recruit until you take that test. Losing lots of ground by not being on the horn. I can tell you that some of these commits are getting tired of the lack of contact. They need something, ANYTHING.

I think it forces him to go after some young coaches — which aligns with many of the griping about the age/longevity/staleness of the current coaches.

I definitely wouldn’t. If he earns it, he will get more money.

I just wonder if we got him partially because we weren’t committed to spending like the big boys.

Remember thats just salary not total compensation
JoePa’s total compensation was something like just over double of his base salary, so at that rate the real compensation would be more like 2 million per year.
I am a Penn State Nittany Lion, and I played for the legendary Joe Paterno, and more importantly, I am a man because of it. - Lavar Arrington
This is true for all of these guys, though. When you compare this base to other BCS coaches it’s right at the very, very bottom.
by Kevin Powers on Jan 7, 2012 12:29 PM EST up reply actions
Conversely.
Could PSU really pay this guy more than Paterno? If he does well in the two years, they’ll renegotiate the contract (especially if the NFL comes calling).

Of course they could.
Every other school in the big ten was paying their coach more than Joe.
And I don’t like starting with this low offer, it sets up a confrontational situation down the road if he succeeds. If you’re that down on his ability to perform at a Jerry Kill level, which is almost double his base, then why hire him?

BTN guy just asked BOB about McDaniels being hired by NE
He seemed pretty surprised by it and didn’t really know how to answer it. Said soemthing about having to talk with Bellicheck about it. Made some small comment about being here the past few days and not knowing….
Sounds like maybe the Pats hired somebody without telling him. He may be back in SC before he realizes
I don't know what NFL coaching rules are, but if BOB can hand off some duties, that would be huge.
Also, he needs to start naming those coaches immediately. LJ is a boss, but he can only do so much on the ground alone. 14 current commits and ~10 spots remaining, let alone keeping the players happy and in State College.

That is an option
Though usually only with a couple, which in the meantime can be used to reward a walk-on senior or two for busting their humps for years with a scholarship for their last year. But as a new guy I don’t know if he would have a clue who to reward.

No, I think that's right.
There have been walk-ons who get a scholarship for a year, then go back to walk-on status. I think Jeremy Boone was one of those. Hell, McGloin’s on scholarship now, that had to some from somewhere.

You don’t keep 10 spots open and hand them out. Also, I’m not entirely sure PSU used the one-semester and back method too frequently. Pretty sure Joe was a “once I give you a scholarship, it’s yours” kind of guy. If there were extras, they likely went to 5th year guys that had been solid contributors to the team (scout team, kick coverage, etc.)

Audible multiple formation boner.
At the end of the BTN interview, the reporter said that in the Gator Bowl, O’Brien’s offense checked from a wishbone formation to a 5 WR. Our PSU QB’s weren’t allowed to change anything.
Interesting point from the BTN guys, tho.
That multiple-formation schemes are tough to do at the CFB level. Wider range of talent at that level.

Dinardo's points were kind of spot-on.
College scheming is more about using talent advantages (if you have the talent) or neutralizing them (if you’re the little guy). NFL is about confusing the other team and getting them out of position, because everyone on the field is a top-tier athlete and has been drilled on your every tendency.
Also, college is about taking raw talent and developing it, and teaching players to do simple things right on a consistent basis.
by Salt on Jan 7, 2012 12:40 PM EST up reply actions 1 recs
Agreed.
But BOB also said he would evaluate the players and adapt the offense accordingly, unlike DickRod saying he would implement his scheme, regardless of how it fit Michigan and the B1G style of play. +1 for BOB.

Sure, but the "multiple multiple multiple" thing was too Weis-like for my tastes.
You can’t bring a whole new set of concepts to the table every week when you’re dealing with 18-22 year olds. You teach them a system and how to succeed in it, and keep their decision making simple, then practice in a way that you can expect them to execute consistently.
In that sense, RichRod was right. I honestly don’t think he failed because he ran a certain offensive scheme. He failed because he rubbed people the wrong way, and he was a complete cluster on defense. His offense would have been fine once he got a full team with his guys, his S&C program, and his system.

Tom Bradley released a statement
Statement issued today from Coach Tom Bradley:
“Penn State has been my life. In my nearly four decades in Happy Valley, I went from a kid who loved football to a man who cherished and respected the game for the life lessons it taught. I learned many of those lessons under a great mentor and coach in Joe Paterno and I have dedicated my life to trying to help other young men, like myself, realize their potential both on and off the football field.
As a former player, I want to acknowledge and thank my teammates who have remained lifelong friends and confidants. Our friendship didn’t end when we hung up our blue and white jerseys – it only became stronger. As for my fellow coaches, the bond we share is irreplaceable in my life. And for that, I am incredibly grateful.
As a coach, I am most proud of how many of our players have gone onto lead lives dedicated to making this world a better place. I have always believed that football was just one part of preparing student athletes for the next chapter in their lives. Those chapters – lived by our players after the games ended – define the Penn State football tradition. I want to thank every one of our players who gave their talent, effort and most importantly, heart to Penn State. It has been my life’s privilege to coach you.
I also want to thank President Erickson, the Board of Trustees, Administrators and Faculty for the chance to be a part of Penn State University. This is a world class academic institution and I am proud to not only work here but to be an alumnus.
Finally, to our fans and alumni, your support has been incredible, not just this year but for the 37 years I have been here as a player and a coach. You make Beaver Stadium come alive. You are our heart. Make sure that our team – and our opponents – never forget it.
I wish Coach O’Brien all the best. No matter the challenges that the university may face, Penn State will always have my support. This is forever my home and forever my family. It is important that we come together to support our players and our university. Now is the time to demonstrate that we are – and always will be – Penn State. "

Bad news, Joyner's going to hold on this job as long as humanly possible.

Well then I might just have to remove him.
I am not afraid.

I read that as
“Until we the alums reconfigure the BoT and they fire Joyner.” Three years, tops.

Do alums have any power at all in removing him?
Other than closing my wallet that is. Which I will be doing until he and Erickson are gone. Thon will thank me.

He is such a class act
He really deserved better in all of this. I would love to see him stick around, but I certainly see why he won’t.
I wish him all the best. He deserves it.
I would like to see a movement
to have Bradley awarded Distinguished Alumni status; it’s the highest recognition a Penn Stater can achieve, and after everything he has done throughout his career, especially in leading the football program through a dark period of uncertainty with dignity and grace, I think he has earned it.
Call for nominations is in early Fall: http://alumni.psu.edu/awards/individual/daa/distinguished.htm
The depth of both my sadness and anger is unfathomable.

Damn, Tommy.......

okay, about to risk getting banned. my guess: every woman on here will call me a "cad" and every guy on here will be secretly nodding in agreement.
Woman’s basketball would be better if the players wore uniforms similar to the uniforms worn by the Volleyball players with the shirts even less blouse-y. I’m not saying go all the way to beach volleyball or anything, but … we’ll you all know what I’m saying.
how would it be "better"?
just curious on your use of that word. I’m sure it might be more enjoyable for you guys to watch, but that doesn’t make it “better”.
