Word of advice for my man BOB:

Goatee.

WE'RE DANCIN!!!

I like the Burnside better.

More of a smooth curve across the face, with more body. As opposed to the Lemmy, which goes further down and then has a sharp edge.

by Salt on Jan 7, 2012 10:45 AM EST up reply actions

Fair enough, but it depends on the man to some extent.

For example, my facial hair grows in a pattern such that I can’t grow a Burnside, but I can pull off a mean Lemmy.

To press conference, yes.

But on field, I hope makes his own style decisions. If that ends up being a shirt, tie, rolled khakis, and black cleats, so be it. I just don’t want him to force to try and be something he’s not.

Agreed.

I was fine with Bradley rolled out to coach in his traditional gear. Whatever you’re comfortable with.

Just start off looking like a pro.

Thank you, Mr. Rosewater, for posting this in FanShots.

BOB, along with Joseph Vincent Paterno, this is the example you MUST live up to. Good luck!

Wow, Nardmont if up in “God’s” country.

If you’re interested, this is a nice article from this morning’s Allentown paper. Interviews his college coach who it turns out is a huge Penn State fan, season ticket holder and JoePa friend.

Didn't realize...

he was recruiting coordinator at GA Tech for four years. Any ideas on who he brought in during that time? Looking for positives here: at least he has recruited for a major D-1 school before unlike some of the other NFL guys that were rumored.

by SpacePirate on Jan 7, 2012 9:38 AM EST up reply actions

He was there during George O'Leary's time.

GTech was good during that time but not great. Of course, you don’t expect them to be a powerhouse. In terms of player personnel, O’Brien was a full fledged coach (where he would have a say in recruiting) after Joe Hamilton and Keith Brooking but before Calvin Johnson, who are probably their three best players in the past 20 years. Again, though, it’s hard to take too much from that because it was Georgia Tech.

The thing that bothers me the most about his history is that he never moved up the ladder in college. He was a RB coach and then moved up to OC, and then sort of stayed there. His offenses were pretty good at Georgia Tech, and when O’Leary left, they actually gave him an “assistant head coach” tag. But then after that he left and went to be the OC for some bland Maryland teams and dreadful Duke teams. It seems like his career trajectory went downhill, or maybe he just felt most comfortable as an Xs and Os guy. That won’t fly at PSU; it’ll be a Weis-like disaster.

Maybe he’s gotten better since then. I hope so.

I'm beginning to like Billy Bob even more

Some guy at Penn State Hershey just discovered a virus that eats cancer. Where were the CNN trucks for that? Now Someone at PSU found something that could cure Leukemia. Coverage? None. THON will probably break $10 mil this year. Put that on "Outside the Lines" you sanctimonious pricks!

But BOB is an offensive guy

so he’s going to need help on defense. We’ve lost far more games with weak offense than with the soft zone.

by Joe 96alum on Jan 7, 2012 9:50 AM EST up reply actions

I'd argue

all of the games we’ve lost have been due to offensive issues. Either not scoring, or continually going 3 & out and giving the other team the ball on a short field.

Sure we didn’t put forth a great (any?) effort against Wisky and Houston, but again, some help from the O might have made those games competitive.

I absolutely agree with this.

The reason their defense looked so good was there was no passing threat—they stacked the box to stop the run. With McG they couldn’t have done that, and it would have opened up the run.

Fire Dan Snyder

by Cari Greene on Jan 7, 2012 10:51 AM EST up reply actions

If anyone recalls I predicted this would happen as soon as it was anounced

Bolden was starting. I was mostly met with disagreement, with people insisting the run game would be unstoppable.

Actually, this over-confidence in the running game hurt PSU and both QBs all season. IMO as awesome as it was, the Iowa game was a bad thing for the rest of the season. Iowa had a ton of injuries and a severe lack of size in their front seven by the time we were running it down their throats. But from that point forward the staff thought this team would be able to win like it was 1986. But the running game wasn’t that good, and neither was the defense.

This also stunted the QBs development. Instead of creating balanced gameplans that utilized the few positive traits each possessed, they were continually put in bad third and long situations. That combined with getting yanked in and out of games wrecked their confidence and rhythm.

Bradley made it clear vs. Nebraska that he was going to take that approach to a new extreme. I understand why he did it, but it failed, win against OSU notwithstanding. The only hope this team had was the offense establishing balance. And the few times we had offensive balance – particularly late in games when we really needed a drive, the offense looked decent. Not great, because there were continual breakdowns at every position at inopportune times, but decent.

I don’t think Bradley would have had this problem going forward, because I have no doubt he would have dumped Jay. And I’m hopeful the new guy won’t either.

Oh yeah, I'll say this, him staying to the coach the Patriots through the playoffs

I like it. I’ve always hated people leaving and not finishing what they started (ALA Brian Kelly). I’m glad he’s not leaving, shows he can commitment.

They could have released him from those obligations.

Some organizations will do so, either as a sign of goodwill or just because they don’t want someone trying to be in two places at once. Of course, I’m sure Belichick is having none of that.

by SweepTheLeg on Jan 7, 2012 9:55 AM EST reply actions

Damn

If I can find myself continually agreeing with someone with a Reagan avatar, then this all might work out after all.

Cheers, STL.

And in all seriousness, this hire might really work out. With obvious exceptions — say, Saban going to Alabama — it’s exceptionally hard to predict how hires will perform. Just because this doesn’t set the world on fire doesn’t mean he won’t be a superb coach. I don’t recall Ohio State fans throwing a parade for Tressel when he was hired (and, hey, even if he was a scoundrel, the man could coach).

by tuscaloosalion on Jan 7, 2012 10:17 AM EST up reply actions

Yes

I know. But there were plenty of OSU fans who sneered at “1-AA” in the same manner that some people on here have sneered at “Patriots Offensive Coordinator.” For so many reasons — some valid, some not — these things simply didn’t count.

Look, I’m not even trying to say that O’Brien will be great. I’m just trying to say that we really, really don’t know. So it’s best to embrace this chance at a fresh start. It might just help ease the transition here better than it did for, say, Rodriguez at Michigan (who, yes, dug his own grave, but had plenty of people handing him shovels).

Besides, what’s the alternative? Assume the worst? Be perpetually angry except for slight twinges of perverse vindication when things do go wrong? If that’s the alternative, then There Is No Alternative (how’s that for a Reagan/Thatcherism, STL?).

by tuscaloosalion on Jan 7, 2012 10:35 AM EST up reply actions

I'm definitely taking a wait-and-see approach with this guy. I'm definitely not in the GRR ANGER segment of the PSU population.

However, I think it’s a bit less than fair to use Tressel as an analogy. The last time O’Brien coached a college team, they went 0-12.

by Salt on Jan 7, 2012 10:38 AM EST up reply actions

There's gray area

between fully embracing it and hating it. And that’s where I’m at. While there’s already a couple of strikes against the guy, I’m open to him rectifying them. If he suddenly turns into Pat Chambers, I may even support him.

But it will take A LOT of effort from this guy to make me care about PSU football again. I’ll have an interest, but I won’t care.

I've had two nights to sleep on this

and it keeps gettng worse. Maybe by spring I will be happy again, but I think for now I am going to embrace the bleakness of winter and pray for lots of snow.

by FB6244 on Jan 7, 2012 10:01 AM EST reply actions

Can I assume the press conference will be on TV?

I’ve had a night to sleep on the fact that this is the guy that got in Tom Brady’s face on the sideline. Joyner and Erickson might be evil geniuses for making this hire because everyone in PA hates Tom Brady. But I’m hoping some defensive staff gets retained. It would make sense for BOB to want as much help on defense as possible.

I think I like this. Note he won a “teammate” award and academic/athletic excellence award. I gotta believe this will translate to good recruiting!

by PaJoe on Jan 7, 2012 10:15 AM EST reply actions

This has been the only hire so far reported... which leads me to believe...

that the offensive staff is the most likely place for a good gutting of the personnel. I won’t mind that. There isn’t a single offensive coach that I value enough to say “man, how could BOB get rid of him!?”

On defense, BOB would be smart to keep at least the key coaches, like Scrap, LJS and Vandy. The defense is great, but would have a great deal of trouble adjusting to a new coach next season, especially with the turnover on the defensive line and backfield. Then, in 2013, if any of those guys want to leave, it will have allowed enough time to transition to new staff on D.

Someone said last night that they were hearing ony one assistant would be retained.

Seeing as how BOB is an offensive coach, I would guess the retained coach would be defensive.

by Jeff Junstrom on Jan 7, 2012 10:34 AM EST up reply actions

I would guess either of LJ or Vandy promoted to DC.

There is a guy named Dave Sollazzo that is being talked about coming with BOB. He’s a DL coach and also a recruiting coordinator candidate. If he’s brought in as DL/RC, I can see LJ being bumped to DC.

by Jeff Junstrom on Jan 7, 2012 10:41 AM EST up reply actions

Hm. Prior DLine coach at Maryland, now same position at Villanova.

Also worked at GTech, where BOB would have known him. He would help to lock down the New Jersey and Maryland recruiting bases.

Is Nova known for having a strong defense? I know they’re usually good, but I don’t know much about their style of play since Westbrook was there.

I’m trying to be supportive, but you have to admit all these non-names have the feel of a coaching search for a middling ACC or Big East team rather than a national power.

by Salt on Jan 7, 2012 10:51 AM EST up reply actions

Nova is good for

1-AA. Very good some years, and won the NC a few years back.

However, competing against schools like Rhode Island and Lehigh for talent vs. competing with OSU and Florida is a different ballgame.

I’m similarly nervous in the fact that these alleged new hires are stepping up to an entirely higher level of competition.

Remember this

Vanderlinden went to Albion College
LJ to Elizabeth City State
Buggs to Norfolk State
Kenny to Norwich (aren’t they a hockey school?)

In my miond these position guys are teachers and motivators. The Co-ordinators and the HC are the X’s and O’s plus the motivators. That’s where we need strong football minds.

I think O’Brien needs the coordinators in place soon.

by PaJoe on Jan 7, 2012 11:06 AM EST up reply actions

That seems to make the most sense

Also, if he keeps even 1 of those 3 defensive guys, they can hit the recruiting trail if he decides to stay on with the Pats for the remainder of the season. Kind of a win/win that they keep a good defense and then also keep good recruiters.

Do we think they will mention any of the staff at the press conference today or will Joyner have a gag order placed about any questions that he doesn’t want to answer?

by GMac14 on Jan 7, 2012 10:35 AM EST up reply actions

Our offensive staff needed retreaded

God! Galen Hall and Anderson should have been retired years ago. JayPa, I like at least as a person, but never felt he could “succeed” under his Dad and Galen. So he needs to go. I don’t know much about the others.

I do hope 1 or 2 of the top defensive coaches are asked to stay on. I would think it would be positive for our current recruiting targets. If Bill can’t be full time for a few weeks, the key position coaches are very important to potential Lions, I would think.

Yeah

I saw those, too.

My only point, he was outstanding teammate, high academic type. I think that translates welll to what we want. His football experience is minimal, but he is being hired as a teacher and motivator. If you look at the top 50 golf instructors, very few if any (maybe Toski) had any sniff at a successful playing career. They just know how to teach and motivate.

You also can’t work for a better organization than Disney as far as innovation, client service and integrity.

Depends on the league

In CFB, QC = Graduate Assistant. Watches tape, game prep, keeps players organized, possibly minor positional control.
In NFL, QC = low level assistant. Same duties, essentially.

I think it's kind of vague

You know how McQueary is the WR coach, but also does some other stuff on the sidelines that doesn’t have much to do with the wideouts? I think that’s the sort of stuff QC coaches generally, do, oddjobs.
