Penn State's Class of 2014 was kick started on Tuesday when DeMatha (Md.) running back Mark Allen committed to the Nittany Lions.
Mark Allen, Ladies and Gentlemen!
Home/HS: Hyattsville, MD/DeMatha
Weight: 185 lbs
Starz 'n Sheetz
Stars: NR (247Sports, Scout, Rivals)
Offer Sheet: None
Allen camped at Penn State over the summer, where the coaches first got a look at his quick, albeit small, frame. Along with teammate Cameron Phillips, Allen received his offer from Penn State yesterday, and wasted no time in pulling the trigger.
Allen is small, but fast. There is limited film on Allen (additional video from Hudl can be seen here), but all written accounts of the DeMatha junior are that he has quick feet and can break the long run.
His size is what has kept many other suitors away, with only Maryland and North Carolina showing additional interest (he has made unofficial visits to both campuses). Only a junior, though, Allen is still growing and if he continues to put weight on his frame with Craig Fitzgerald and Brian Bell (former S&C coach at...DeMatha), could be a powerful back at Penn State in two short years.
Finally, it certainly doesn't hurt to keep up good relations with one of the powerhouse schools in high school football. With Larry Johnson and Charles London working in the area, Penn State will be tough to beat.
Welcome to Penn State, Mark!
