While the Lions were able to stay competitive for a half without Tim Frazier, they were disposed of easily by Akron in the 2nd half of the 5th place game in Puerto Rico.
Tim Frazier went down just 6 minutes into the Nittany Lions' contest with the Akron Zips on Sunday with an apparent ankle injury. He hobbled gingerly off the floor then went back into the lockerroom. He is out for the rest of the game, but the long-term diagnosis seems positive.
Dick Jerardi on the PSU radio broadcast called it a sprained left ankle, but clarified that they have not received an official diagnosis from PSU trainers. The ESPN broadcast team reported on the feed that PSU is calling it an achilles injury.
Whether he'll be ready for Bucknell on Black Friday remains highly questionable.
PSU is winning 36-32 over the Zips as DJ Newbill is having a coming out party in Frazier's absence (14 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals, and 0 turnovers so far).
Tip-off set at 1:30 PM ET and you can watch online at ESPN3.

Full recap of what the scoreboard called a win coming tomorrow. For now, the Lions were able to simply able to get by a very crippled Providence club that had no true ball-handler whatsoever. After finishing regulation tied at 43, PSU 'got hot' in overtime for a 55-52 dub. Tim Frazier unsurprisingly led the way with 19 points, 9 rebounds, and 7 assists.
With the win, Penn State moves on to the 5th place game which will be Sunday at 1:30pm on ESPNU. They will face one of the MAC's best teams, the Akron Zips. Stay tuned for more PSU coverage at the Puerto Rico Tip-Off over the weekend.

The hits keep coming for the Providence basketball team. Their other star guard, Bryce Cotton, is being reported as doubtful to play tonight against PSU according to the Providence Journal. He turned his ankle in last night's contest against UMass, but stayed in the game. The short turnaround however has seen his injury swell and he probably won't go tonight. His absence would leave Ed Cooley's roster with just 5 active scholarship players.
It certainly won't reflect well on PSU if they can't beat a team that has seen its roster deplete over the last week.
After a shellacking at the hands of one of the top teams in the country, Penn State will face a decidedly less daunting task against a team with only six healthy scholarship players.
In the losers' bracket of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off, Penn State will face off against Providence at 7:30pm on ESPN3. The Friars just lost a heartbreaker to UMass, who won 77-75 on a tip-in at the buzzer.
PSU will be catching the Friars at the right time, as Providence only has six healthy scholarship players after a few injuries and ineligibilities knocked out some of their main contributors.
As usual, we're giving you, the readers, the forum to espouse your thoughts during PSU's attempt to slay the mighty NC State dragon. Tip-off is at 5:00 PM ET on ESPN2. If you can't watch on TV for whatever reason, there's always the radio.
