Penn State Football Sanctions - Post Season Ban & Recruiting:
I was talking with a few buddies this morning over coffee about how Penn State can still attract top talent even though the football team is banned from post season play. I started thinking about what would sell me on the experience of playing major college football other than academics. I think a good start is playing for a coach with NFL ties. Another bonus of playing major college football is participating in a bowl game or conference championship. Unfortunately, Penn State can't offer recruits either opportunity.
Well what can PSU offer that is potentially cooler than travelling to a bowl game or conference championship game????
How about taking a page from Notre Dame's playbook? (NOTE: I just threw up a little in my mouth referencing Notre Dame) Two trips across the Atlantic Ocean to play against the service academies and four trips to Hawaii would be a pretty big deal. For some of the kids playing major college football, international travel and trips to Hawaii aren't in the cards. Penn State could schedule two games against Army and Air Force oversees to start the season. An oversees game against a service academy will offer our Alumni base an opportunity to travel, reward our players with two vacations they likely won't see at any other university, and pay tribute to the members of the military defending our freedom around the Globe.
Why stop in Europe??? Let’s schedule four season-ending games at Hawaii. It goes without saying, but most of us will never see Hawaii in person. Scheduling a season-ending game against Hawaii will also reward our players, coaches, staff and alumni base.
Penn State travels extremely well and that will continue with rare opportunities like I previously mentioned. Most importantly, it allows us to give a big middle finger to the NCAA and Mark Emmertt.
