For their efforts in the season-finale against Wisconsin, Penn State was selected as the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl National Team of the Week as voted on by the Football Writers Association of America. They were the first team from the Big Ten Conference to be honored this season.

Other winners this year have included Texas A&M (beating Alabama), North Carolina State (beating Florida State) and Baylor (beating Kansas State).

The Nittany Lions have won the award two other times in its history, both coming when they defeated Ohio State, once in 2005 and the other time in 2008.
