As someone who is very proud to have graduated from the great academic institution that Penn State is, and proud of how well Joe graduated his players, I too was deeply offended by the condemnation of our culture. I am glad that BSD has made a point to hightlight the non-sports accomplishments of PSU and its student-athletes.
However, in my view these accomplishments are more powerful as stand-alone reporting of facts, and that they lose their luster when they are followed by "#culture" or a reference to Emmert. I understand that commentary, and sympathize with it. But when it is added, it gives me the impression of vindictiveness and sour grapes, and I feel that is somewhat counterproductive.
Our culture was great before, and I was proud of it before, but maybe a silver-lining in all this is that we are even more motivated to seek out its positive manifestations and celebrate them, hopefully for what they are, and not just as a finger in Emmert’s eye.
