Penn State-Iowa Basketball Interrogation With Black Heart Gold Pants
RossWB over at BHGP decided to return the favor of interrogating me about all things Penn State hoops as well as tonight's re-match with Iowa. Why does PSU play infinitely better at home? Does Richie Sambora have any eligibility? What do I miss most about Ed DeChellis? These answers and more, if you click on the link.

I don't think a vote for Chambers has to be a vote against DeChellis
I like Chambers’ enthusiasm as much as anyone else, but I feel Ed DeChellis did a lot of great things for this program that shouldn’t be discounted…especially considering where the program was when he started. For being such a supposedly bad recruiter, he was able to bring in guys like Talor Battle, Geary Claxton, Jamelle Cornley and Tim Frazier. And winning an NIT and getting only the fourth NCAA tournament bid in 40 years for this program is not something to take for granted either.
Sure they have different coaching styles, but I don’t think yelling and stares make the ball go into the basket any more than a more reserved approach does. And the comment about the “ability to sell players and fans on PSU basketball” is questionable to me considering the fact there are normally no fans at games and seem to only cheer for Big Mac promotions. Chambers has a long way to go to get to even the accomplishments of Ed DeChellis. I hope he does great but I don’t think we have to bash Ed in order to praise Pat.

Ed DeChellis had a terrible tie collection.

Seriously.
I was pretty close to mailing him a tie for the tournament game last year, but then I got drunk and forgot.

I agree to an extent
Some of the DeChellis sniping has been undeserved. But it’s pretty easy to get excited about the direction Chambers is taking the program. It might be a little premature to fully assume that results are going to follow, but the excitement he’s creating is not entirely superficial- I mean, the team he inherited had as little talent and experience as any team I can think of in the past 10 years, and he has them all playing aggressively and (even without a whole lot of wins) showing pride and progress as the season goes on.
I’m not blindly optimistic, but if you take the same enthusiasm, hustle, and style of play he’s getting from the current roster and implant it into a team with a lot of natural ability, you’re going to see a lot of W’s. Can’t wait til some of these young guys join the team and start contributing. FWIW, I’ve heard from college basketball “insiders” so to speak that DeChellis ran one of the best practices in the country. And he did have some success. But for a non-traditional basketball power to jump up and be able to CONSISTENTLY win, there needs to be a more holistic change in the program than just Xs and Os, and I’m hopeful that Chambers can make that leap.

Ed was okay.
He was handed a giant bag of crap when he took the job. Not enough players to run a full practice, a non-supportive athletic department…I mean, we know the story by now. If you’re new to caring about Penn State basketball, this is a nice reminder of where the program was a few years ago:
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/columns/story?columnist=oneil_dana&id=3630400
DeChellis got the program from “complete afterthought” to “occasionally punchy against very good teams”. That appeared to be his ceiling, though. Chambers’ job is to drag the program up a few more notches. Based on recruiting so far, he’s on his way.
So if you love basketball, get in on the ground floor now. With the impending talent infusion, they’re going to be competitive before you know it.

I agree with you completely
the one thing that appears, (we’ll see in a couple years) is that Chambers seems to have better recruiting connections. I don’t think he is any more agressive, I just think that his time at Villanova and BU have given him more access to the recruiting area and more face time in that area than ED. It means a lot to the kids, again it appears to mean a lot, that they already know who Chambers is. He came in with a better coaching reputation than ED, since ED was pretty unknown in our recruting area. I liked ED and he did bring in some good players, some of my favorite all time, but he was not able to do it on a regular basis. It remains to be seen if Chambers can be consistant with recruiting but he sure has a nice start.

RossWB is kind of a jerk...
I’m not sure why he feels the need to take shots at our team in his questions. I don’t recall Tim doing the same to him the last time. PSU is pretty bad this year, but Iowa is only marginally better at 5-7 in conference. Not to mention they haven’t had a winning record since 2007.

You're right. I never go there.
But the interview Tim did with RossWB was the last time Iowa and PSU played was posted on BSD and I read that.

You watch your ass!
That’s kind of their thing over there. Since Rambler’s been on hiatus there’s probably a little more pent up aggression than usual.
Be careful, TPTB here wish they were as cool as the ’Pants.

I'm going to change my username to Jerky McJerkface now, to better reflect my true nature.
I’m just having a little fun with Tim. I’m more than happy to respond to similar questions if posed.

Jerky McJerface has a nice ring to it
Kind of cumbersome to say though.

As you can see
my typing prowess is top notch. Up there with the Iowan’s corn growing abilities. I feel that was a lame joke. Does it suffice?

WOOHOO
I only accept payment in Sacagawea dollars and Wheat Pennies. I hope that doesn’t pose a problem.

Hint: I think you'll lock this down if you're willing to accept payment in corn
or crystal meth. Iowa’s top two exports, I’m told.

There was a guy
that was recently arrested in a town near mine. Apparently he was running a meth house. Judging by his appearance, I’m not sure why anybody would be surprised he was cooking up meth.

It would help if he smiled

Please share more of your inside jokes (without explanation)
I will continue to pretent to care. This is undoubtedly more exciting than the prospect of spending a minute in Iowa.

Not fair
We export pigs and bad rivalry trophies too. Then again…I’m sure you guys know something about bad rivalry trophies:

We do
though it was my understanding that Land Grant Trophy was the brainchild of George Perles. So, technically, not a PA export, but from Michigan. Add that to the list of things that Michiganers (word?) suck at building. Cars occupying the first 1,200 spots, of course.

I've done the opposite
Born and raised in PA, moved to the “small wonder” 3 years ago for work. You definitely performed the state swap in the appropriate order!

Same here...
moved to DE for grad school and now work in the First State. Wish PA would consider annexation. They could buy the state, tax free.

You can buy booze like a grown up in Delaware, right?
You win. PA liquor laws are the worst. Combine that with the shitty weather and I wonder everyday why I continue to live here.

I rag on DE a lot..
but seriously, its SUCH A WEIRD STATE.
Most disappointing to me when I moved to Newark was that the beach was still 2 hours away in such a tiny state.
and the people…

Definitely full of characters
I’m in Middletown so not too far from Newark and yes, it can be a deceptively long drive.
I shouldn’t rag on DE too much, I really enjoy the school I work at and the people I work with, but WEIRD is a great word for the state and many of it’s inhabitants. I’m always amazed at the seemingly large culture gap from the north to the south of such a small state. I’m originally from Western PA, so I wasn’t aware of the ‘slower lower’ stereotype until I moved here.
Speaking of weird, closing the bar at 1 am?!?!?! Absurd!

Move to Chicago
Beer, liquor, wine. You can get it anywhere…grocery stores, mini marts, 7/11, Walgreens! Oh, and you can vote like 9x in every election too. Good times!
