An Interview With Class of 2013 PA OL Mike McGlinchey
Though William Penn Charter offensive tackle Mike McGlinchey doesn't have an offer yet from either of the two major in-state schools, he is hearing from some top-end program outside the Keystone State.
"I have offers from Wisconsin, Michigan, Boston College, Virginia, Maryland, Duke, Rutgers."
The offer from Wisconsin is the one that most Penn State fans will appreciate, given the Badger coaching staff's ability to coach up an offensive lineman. Already a four-star lineman on some services, McGlinchey was impressed with Madison on his recent visit.
Not convinced yet?
"I'm 6-9, 280 pounds."
That seems like the appropriate size for Donovan Smith's counterpart.
Linebacker coach Ron Vanderlinden has been by McGlinchey's Philadelphia high school "a couple of times", but he hasn't spoken with any of the staff members directly yet. He's still waiting on that Penn State offer, one that could possibly come this weekend.
"It's obviously 100% Penn State's decision. I'm just going to keep working hard and hopefully it will pay off."
Growing up in Pennsylvania, McGlinchey has already been inundated with a lot of Penn State attention. Nittany Lion fans are hoping one of the top in-state linemen will stay in-state.
"The first time I was [at Penn State] was for the Alabama game this year. And I followed them all the time. They are the main team for everybody in PA. So they are hard to get away from."
Though they haven't offered yet, Penn State would possibly move to the top of McGlinchey's list once he gets that scholarship offer. And his first priority is something that Penn State has prided itself on for some time.
"Academics are huge in my choice."
McGlinchey's out-of-school activities should interest many Penn State fans, as well. He's good friends with Nick Arcidiacono ("I've known Nick since the 4th grade") and has recently become friends with some other Penn State targets, including a top Philadelphia running back.
"I actually live right around the corner from [Archbishop] Wood and I'm good friends with all the guys. And I have become close with Dave Williams from West Catholic."
Like other 2013 recruits, McGlinchey is taking his time and taking his visits. Though he won't be there this weekend (Mike says he didn't find out about the event until it was too late, and he has a family commitment this weekend, regardless), he'll have more to think about. Any chance for a commitment? It's possible.
"I think I will try and commit somewhere before the end of school year this year."

Yeah, all we ever produced was Matt Ryan
And all you produce are beastly girl swimmers. Go Charter!
LOL @ Matt Ryan, what's he ever done?
Our swimming program is awesome. So are our basketball and soccer programs.
What are they feeding kids these days?
6’9" H.S. lineman. Jeewhiz, remember when William Perry was a refrigerator. Nowadays he’d be an igloo 6 packer.

Why does this young man not have an offer yet?
Bookend 6’9" OT’s? DO WANT.
"Every time you go to that cook-off you get drunk as a poet on payday!"
That's what I want to know.
I’m trying to get ahold of his coach, who can hopefully shed some additional light. But on paper and film, this kid seems like a legit tackle prospect, something we desperately need in this class.

Oh God, Fugi really is tweeting about our recruiting coverage?
I thought this was a joke.
I mean, it is. But still.

That is absolutely amazing.
I can totally see him calling up one of his friends later and relating the sick burn he pulled against Eric on Twitter.
"This is being a Penn State fan. We’ll prove it, or we won’t. It’s not about proving it to them, it’s about proving to ourselves."
I get that recruiting coverage isn't for everyone. Really. I do.
But the month of February has brought us the Class of 2012 Signing Day, additions to the BSD recruiting staff, and the first (and earlier than normal) Junior Day for Penn State. Like I said on Twitter, this kid would probably criticize us for covering college basketball in March.
We’ve had a good run today with coverage, and will hopefully have some updates throughout the weekend. But I think you guys will like the 3p story better than anything.

I personally love the coverage.
It has not been the typical psychophantic recruiting nonsense you get from most other sources. It has been relatively detached and objective through the last 5 months. Even losing Williams was taken in stride without a huge deal made.
That and I absolutely love getting an extra PSU voice in potential recruits ears early and often.

Thanks for the words.
When we’re talking with the recruits, we’re not really a PSU voice in their ear. We ask PSU-themed questions, obviously, but we aren’t talking up the program so much as we’re trying to get their take on PSU.

are quite so unbiased.
Junny, respecting your journalistic integrity --
seriously, I am — but asking Penn State-themed questions still benefits us. I mean that as an expression of appreciation, because your questions keep our brand in his frontal lobe — thanks!

Well, yes. That's true.
Insomuch as I’m actually speaking about Penn State with these guys, I suppose that keeps them thinking about Penn State. But it certainly would be tough to write an article for a Penn State blog without asking semi-leading questions AMIRIGHT!?!

I'll echo this
I pretty much never gave a shit about recruiting. I still don’t really care. That aside, I’ve read every one of the recruiting articles. Mostly because its all taken in stride (we haven’t had a stars debate in like a month!) and presented as personal stories about these kids.
I’m interested in some of these exceptional people, and hope that the majority find themselves in Blue and White next year for the right reasons, but won’t get bent out of shape if they don’t.
Excellent work so far with these pieces. Keep up the good work

I just looked up the twitter feed for this "Fugimaster" guy
I vaguely remember him on BSD, was he a contributor at one point? Other than that I really don’t know who he is. So WTF is his problem? According to his twitter profile he is/was a copy editor for the Daily Collegian, so that explains generally why his personality type is “douche” but if he used to be affiliated with BSD, why so negative? Is it because he’s not writing for BSD, but his other outlets (twitter? SB Nation Pittsburgh? CBS Sports (srsly?)) are not as well-read, so he wants to poke at BSD to get someone to pay attention to him?
Its a long story
So I’ll try to sum it up in a few sentences.
1. BSD Mike made him an editor to help out with punctuation marks and stuff because Fugi asked nicely.
2. BSDMike had other shit going on in his life and basically relied on Fugi and NGameday(Ben Jones) for most of the content before the takeover in August.
3. Fugi was a sophomore, and as such, quite immature. He didn’t handle criticism well, and he received some of it.
4. ‘OMG BLOG WARZZZZZZZ’
5. Ruts and Junny took over in August, bringing a consortium of Penn State bloggers with them, increasing the content and letting us swear. By the way, I really fucking appreciate it.
6. Fugi’s immaturity and some previous run-ins with some of the new staff coming over basically prevented him from accepting a position to stay on at the shiny new BSD
7. Something about bloggers not being real journalists and getting to eat food.
I think that about sums it up

Ipso facto, you should be a pro blogger!
Also, shit, I didn’t know we could swear…
I try to limit my swearing
But sometimes a solid F-bomb really solidifies a point. Or adds humor. Well placed swearing is an art, if you ask me.

He lied about his Catholic school experiences.
I’m more than twice his age and went to 6 years of Catholic school. What he claimed happened I never saw, but I think stuff like it happened a lot right before my time and still some when I was there. But by the time he got there I’d bet the house it was 98% gone.
I seem to remember even calling him on his claims. He’s just a very immature person who seems to live in at least a partial fantasy world.

The comments are hysterical...
Mr. Bittner, what you’ve just written is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever read. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone on the intenet is now dumber for having read it. guess I'll get excited about these kids if any of them actually come to Penn State
until then, I’ll assume they’re all super amazing and everyone will spend the next year kissing their asses and telling them how wonderful they are.
Silly q, I know,
but will you guys be posting updates over the weekend? I know a “commitment” at this point in time is written in smoke, but it’s fun to think, if only for awhile, we are building an arsenal of recruits.
