Yeah
I am sitting here bored, so figured I would do this and try and get some chats going, to stave off my boredom.

BJC is still rocking.
Super packed in here this year.

Never got to do THON
Since I didn’t go to PSU, but my brother did at the end of the last century and into this one, and he said that usually the crowd fluctuated. he was still in rec Hall for it, but once the total was about to be announced, everyone would pack in. I hope that more people stay around, especially in those early hours to keep the dancers going and energized.

I'll give this a shot...
So I was a captain back in 04 and 05 and had the privilege of getting to do a number of really cool things. Maybe it’s just me, but i’m shocked by how exponentially THON has grown since I left HV in 06. I remember back in 04 helping R&R close the doors somewhere between 1 and 2 pm. (I was not R&R for the record) That was 5-6 hours before THON ended and only an hour or so before family hour. Now you pretty much have to be in line by 9am on Sunday just to get into the BJC which is a much larger building. Also, the amount of people staying through the overnight has increased which is amazing. It’s unbelievable that the event has come so far so fast and will almost undoubtedbly break 10 million dollars this year.
For everyone who has helped support this amazing cause,
you have my utmost respect. It really is indescribable and I can only hope it continues to grow at an unbelievable rate.

BoB spoke at THON
He needs to work on his pep talking ability. Also he needs to learn that it is We Are…Penn State. Was putting to much space between We and Are, real weak on his part…but he is learning atleast.

I missed this but...
BoB said that whoever raises the most money, he will buy them season tickets that fall.
That is a tradition that woudl be nice to see started yearly. A little extra motivation never hurts.

I was saying more in general
He needs a little work on speaking to a large crowd like that.

I guess I will throw out a random question for people to ponder
Favorite BBQ? Is there a region you prefer, a type of sauce, a cut of meat that is better than all the rest. What do you like?
I prefer a ketchup based sauce nice and thick, with some heat and sweetness to it, and pork ribs for me are my favorite. Will say that I hated Carolina chopped bbq, with their vinegar based sauces.

Haha...I'm just the opposite
I thoroughly enjoy the tangier, vinegar-based Carolina BBQ. The Kansas City style, which is usually sweeter, is okay but gets old quickly for me. I also think it puts more emphasis on the sauce and less on the awesome smokey taste of the meat itself. Takes diff’rent strokes to move the world. :)

I just don't like the vinegar based sauces
I think they are too bitter and over power the meat. Living in NC for 2 years, just pushed me over the edge, from its okay, to full on hate it.

Any kind of BBQ pork.
I’m definitely a beef & steak guy, but when it comes to barbecue, it needs to be pork. Preferably a whole hog on a spit with a nice dry rub on it finished in a Jack Daniels BBQ sauce (homemade, not store bought).

Agreed.
Back in the late ‘80s we lived where it was hard to find and I’d take what was available , some not even good. Learned to like pulled, shredded, chopped … prefer tomato based with cole slaw (mayo based)

Memphis style dry rub
With a thinner vinegar based sauce on the side. Or to put it another way, the right answer.

Yeah the right way to screw up
Perfectly cooked ribs.

I actually want to fight you.

I know people are really passionate about their barbecue
but I never really knew/understood what the regional differences really were.
That, and I fail to see how anyone could want to fight with a belly full of delicious meat… regardless of animal used, animal part used, or whether it had sauce, vinegar, or whatever other edible sauce/condiment/flavoring agent.
And the best barbecue I’ve ever had is the kind I smoke out over an open fire pit in my backyard while consuming copious amounts of beer and running the hose to make sure the flames don’t get too big while I slow cook it for most of the day. After a few hours of smelling that barbecue and working up an appetite… nothing is better. The only thing that might touch it is fresh from the bay steamed clams… and there’s nothing saying you can’t do barbecue and clams.

I will ask Anuj for an update tomorrow.
I’m guessing they’re still a little busy today!
