Urban Meyer Recruiting Tactics
I think the only thing that makes this story significant is Barry Alvarez (who I do respect) may go talk to Jim Delany about Urban Meyer's sudden recruiting success in the Big Ten.
I also think over-signing may play a role here. I heard that OSU refused two players who tried to send in their LOI paperwork because they had no scholarships left yesterday.
I haven't found a source on that yet (honestly because I haven't looked), but Meyer will learn soon enough that the Big Ten is no place for oversigning like the ESSS EEE SEEE.
In my opinion, I hope he gets caught with his hand in the cookie jar. His pillaging of Penn State commits at our darkest hour along with his "friendship"** with JoePa have me wondering if he stands to uphold the same traditions OSU has stood for since 2002: win at all costs.
**I put friendship in quotes here because, from the information I have, it seems as if Urban Meyer is playing this relationship for recruiting reasons. He never publicly defended Paterno during the difficult times, but when the media narrative turned positive after JoePa's passing, he was suddenly very vocal about being "best friends" and got the Big Ten Network to focus on him during the Memorial. It's a bit "snake" to me, but maybe that's just my dislike of O$U and Meyer standing in the way. What do you all think?

Meh
Urban was a huge name going to a high-profile program. Most of his “stolen” recruits came from PSU, a program that lost the legendary coach amidst an enormous scandal and waited months to secure a new coach. Even as a fan of PSU, it is hard for me to get outraged. Kids flipping to OSU just makes sense in this scenario.
And Bielema is a douchenozzle, so it is that much more difficult for me to get burned up over something that pisses him off.
Consider this my official declaration of non-support of child molestation.

Agreed.
Considering how poorly our situation was handled and the sort of pull that OSU has had even in its pre-Urban days, it all just seemed kinda predictable. And it’s hard to begrudge a kid for doing what he thinks is best for him, regardless of whether or not we agree with his decision.
I also agree that Bielema is a douchenozzle.
"I just wanted to thank you for everything you've done for this university." "Oh, I haven't done enough." - Joe Paterno.
I just want to beat that team into the ground next season.
And the season after that. And after that. And after that…
Let Meyer have his unseasoned dish and just go out and beat him on the field.

The only thing remarkable about the OSU flips...
is that they are going in spite of NCAA sanctions against OSU. However, by the time it will really effect most of these recruits, those sanctions be gone (assuming Urbs stays out of trouble).
OSU is a good football opportunity that got even better with a good coach. We are an unknown quantity in regard to coach and NCAA sanctions. We were going to lose verbal recruits… that we lost most of them to OSU instead of other lesser schools is, again, not a surprise. Perhaps we should look at that as evidence that our staff (especially the outgoing staff) did a pretty damn fine job of holding the class together through trying times.
Only someone completely in denial or living under a rock could possibly be (negatively) surprised by the outcome of this recruiting season.
Solid point and hope for the future.
It is not as if the PSU recruits left for scrub, or even average programs.
Even Williams waited until near signing day.
I heard that OSU refused two players who tried to send in their LOI paperwork because they had no scholarships left yesterday.
Any idea of the names?
Of the commitments, the 2 who had already signed as part of the 2011 class, 21 who had already committed, and 4 who were waiting until NLOI day to decide were well known.
tOSU has 1 opening under the 82 limit, 2 under the yearly 25 limit, with 2 they’re still pursuing (1 promising, 1 long shot) so i don’t think a big name would have been turned away.
It could have been a couple of lesser recruits who were off the radar, perhaps hoping someone else would back out (or some other similar bizarre line of thought), but I would be surprised – if you are a lower recruit chasing a top program, you know you don’t have the luxury of waiting until signing day.
We are an unknown quantity in regard to coach and NCAA sanctions. If the NCAA injects itself on an off-the-field university issue that didn’t involve any athletes, PSU fans won’t be the only ones giving the NCAA a box of tissues and asking them to go find another corner to squeeze one off in.
