I found this article rather interesting, in hindsight, for the accolades it showered over him.
Here are a few examples:
"If Sandusky did not have such a human side, there would be a temptation around Happy Valley to canonize him: Saint Sandusky, leader of linebackers, molder of men."
"( Tom Bradley, a former Nittany Lionsplayer who is in his 21st year as a Paterno assistant, is more colorful in describing what it's like to follow a legend: "Next guy in always gets whacked.")"
"Here's the best thing you can say about Jerry Sandusky: He's the main reason that Penn State is Linebacker U...and linebackers aren't even his enduring legacy."

Yeah, the guy was kind of a big deal
And still sort of is, football-wise, anyway.
It’s articles like this that help paint the picture of how people did not see the dark side of what appeared to be a great man. Heck, the guy even had a (now defunct) creamery ice cream flavor named after him (Sandusky Blitz, which, sadly, was pretty good). Not many folks can say that.
And Not a Single Quote
from Paterno saying how much he appreciated all JS did for the program. So much for all the folks claiming Joe and Jerry were great friends.

What articles or quotes are you referring to? Joe and Jerry were never great friends.

That is what I am saying
There are a lot of articles out there claiming Joe covered for JS because he was an old friend. My point is that, if that were true, you would think the SI reporter would have gotten a quote from Joe about what a great guy JS was, instead of from Matt Millen.
Jerry even says they weren't friends.
Also, they must have forgotten to talk to all of those people who had been hearing things about Jerry Sandusky being a pederast.

Yeah – the “Joe had to know” crowd seems to think that he and Jerr were inseparable pals. It’s an understandable supposition to an uneducated outsider, but another case where folks do not want to be bothered with the facts.
M-dog – it’s extremely telling that Paterno is not quoted in that article.
The quote from Scrap is especially poignant – if he only knew….

Correction
Page 2 was slow to load and there is one quip from Paterno.
“I bug Jerry,” says Paterno, “but I drive Fran absolutely nuts.”
Still that’s almost a stock quote from some other article. What’s the writing equivalent to B-reel?
Joe to ME.....
“Jerry was a good coach, but I felt that he wasn’t going to be in line for HC because of his attention to Second Mile….I told him I wasn’t going to retire and that he had a choice because you cannot serve 2 masters effectively….it was either assistant coach or Second Mile.” And the rest is history and I, for one, believe Joe no matter what the revisionists say. Look, if JS says anything different now, then he just incriminates himself and I don’t think that he would….anybody??

Joe could just be ashamed of his longtime coordinator, if he really did know about the 1998 incident.
