Hey guys, dont get me wrong here I love me some PSU (and am in no way complaining about the success of PSU)but I was wondering what everyones thoughts about having more star players (postseason award winners, Heisman winners, Doak Walker, and stuff like that)and more players going to the NFL on the team under the new coaching staff. Iowa sends more players the league than PSU. IOWA!! It is obviously going to be a more open program with more access to the players which is a good thing because it is basically media driven and preseason hype. Im sure some people are already talking about who is gonna win it 2012 . I know Paterno didnt care about stuff like that. It was all about the team. But cant we have a good team and still have players compete for the Heisman(or other awards) every few years? I followed the link today about the kickoff classic which led me to this. At LBU.com I was watching the 10 min or less videos and PSU vs Northwestern from 2002 came across so I watched it. Larry Johnson runs wild in the first half. Then ends up breaking the single game rushing record after 2 minutes have gone by in the second half. He then proceeds to sit the rest of the game and Tim Shaw future LB starts getting carries. So I did a little calculating just for fun(because I am extremely busy at work today) to see what LJ could have done with some of those extra carries. *This is purely speculation*
So his stats for the season were 271 carries, 2087 yards, 20 tds, 7.71ypc. So that should be 1 td for every 13.55 carries. That avgs to be about 22 carries per game on a 12 game season. Not too bad. When Barry Sanders won the Heisman in 1988 he run the ball 344 times for 2628 yards and 37 tds. So, lets inflate LJs stats to match the amount of carries Sanders had. It would look like this 344 carries, 2652 yards and 25 tds. This is only an increase of about 6 carries per game to 28/game. Also take in to account the never ending love of the fullback by JoePa and we can add I would guess between 4 and 7 more goal line tds that season. He would have been a lock for the Heisman and had one of the best season by a running back in history. What would it have hurt to give the a few more carries in the games?
Wouldnt this have also helped in recruiting some of these big time guys to play at PSU if they think they can become a household name?
Just some thoughts here. But I personally hope to see more PSU players in the limelight. Starting this year with Silas Redd. You hear about all these heisman campaigns for players and stuff. They need to get his name out there and then feed him the rock as much as he can handle. And why not? This is supposed to be a football powerhouse right? Lets prove it.
