NCAA President hasn't ruled out "appropriate penalties" against PSU

Seems the pressure is getting to Mark Emmmert. The ESPN headline says he is signaling "heavy sanctions" against PSU, but the actual text of the article doesn't appear to state that anywhere. It is quite clear however that Emmert is feeling pressure, does not seem to care about precedent, and is looking to get the public off his back.

He will wait and discuss the issues with Penn State officials before making his decision. One important quote i took from this:

"This is completely different than an impermissible benefits scandal like happened at SMU, or anything else we've dealt with," Emmert said. "This is as systemic a cultural problem as it is a football problem. There have been people that said this wasn't a football scandal.

"Well it was more than a football scandal, much more than a football scandal. It was that but much more. And we'll have to figure out exactly what the right penalties are. I don't know that past precedent makes particularly good sense in this case, because it's really an unprecedented problem."

Again, I still find it totally absurd to hear people acknowledge this issue goes way beyond Penn State football, and then decide the best thing to do is penalize Penn State football. Its such an odd stance to take.

Sanctions are a band aid on the leaking dam of a larger moral issue, which goes far beyond the borders of Centre County. They also will never be good enough to appease the insatiable public thirst for blood here. Its gonna get even more interesting in the coming weeks, if you can believe that.

Buckle up.
