An open letter to PSU players and recruits

Having a little time to let the sanctions sink in, read reactions from the head coach, quotes from players, and the intelligenzia waxing philosophical, I have a degree of optomism for the school I have spent half my life loving, enjoying, remebering, and following. Having so much invested in PSU and with the benefit of being a proud alumni for many years now, I want to say to the present players. Stay.

Stay because you are now a part of something. PSU is more than the team you are a part of, the uniform you wear. It is a living breathing organism. It is a place you will remember fondly years after you leave. The people you have met there will be your friends for years to come. You will see that as you go through life and meet people from Penn State, whether it is at a party, a bar stool, or a job interview, you will immediately have a connection and shared point of reference that other schools simply cannot offer. I have only met one person in my life (trust me I have met a lot) who did not absolutely love their Penn State experience. Few, if any other schools can say that. These are all things you would be giving up if you left, and for what?

Other than a few select schools, there is no guarantee that you would get to a bowl game anyway. Certainly, no guarantee of playing for a national title. No other school can better prepare you for the pros, no other school can boast of the fan appreciation you will receive for sticking it out, particularly now. You will be remembered and praised for staying. You will be another number in a foreign land, if you leave.

To recruits I say come, learn what it is to be a part of a team. Learn what it is to be part of something bigger than a team. Learn what it is to be part of a school, a community that respects and honors hard work and perserverence. Come and be prepared for the next level of football and of life. Come and know that you will help preserve a historic past while at the same time helping to take PSU to new heights. With hard work, dedication, patience, and skill you will be welcomed into the greatest nation on earth... Nittany Nation. You learn why we have been, are and will forever continue to be Penn State.
