The Knoxville Nationals are the premiere event in sprint car racing. They are held in the small farming town of Knoxville, Iowa, about an hour and a half southeast of Des Moines.
Central Pennsylvania sprint car racing consists mostly of local drivers, who despite an underdog stature, routinely beat the World of Outlaws when that touring series comes to Pennsylvania tracks (guess that's why the Outlaws have to make rule changes to stop us; if only our local tracks would grow a pair, anyway...). However, our PA heroes rather rarely claim the big races outside of the Keystone State. Though the great car owner Bob Weikert of my own Adams County won the Knoxville Nationals with Sioux Falls, South Dakota's Doug "Lone Wolf" Wolfgang, the only PA drivers to win at Knoxville were Bobby "Scruffy" Allen of Hanover in 1990 and Tim Shaffer of Aliquippa in 2010. Mostly Knoxville is won by fat rich boys like Donny Schatz, tools like Danny Lasoski and Sammy Swindell, and, of course, the respectable but still dislikable (because screw the outlaws) Steve Kinser. Well, tomorrow night, Stevie Smith (son of the awesome PA driver Steve "The Black Bandit" Smith), born and raised in New Oxford (717! ADAMS COUNTY REPRESENTIN!) and residing thereabouts when not residing in Broken Arrow, OK will be starting on the pole at Knoxville. Other PA drivers in first eight rows will be Lucas Wolfe (son of the fine driver Randy Wolfe) and Lance Dewease of Fayetteville.
ANYONE BUT SCHATZ OR SWINDELL, BUT LET'S GO STEVIE! 717 REPRESENT
