The problem with Paterno blame
Child abusers are masters of manipulation. Think about all the people who were fooled or misled by Sandusky. Hundreds, maybe thousands, of friends, family members, Second Mile staff members, police officers, Children and Youth Services, the Department of Public Welfare, the District Attorney’s office…if you accuse Paterno of not doing enough with the little information he had, you have to implicate everyone else who could have known.
The belief that Joe Paterno and the rest actually sought to cover up and protect Sandusky has always struck me as a stretch. I cannot imagine that three or four men would actually conspire to cover this thing up. It is clear that they handled it very poorly. But I believe that Joe did exactly what he should have done. He reported what McQ told him to his superiors. I am a teacher and I was just told that if I suspect abuse I should tell the principal and or school social worker or report it to DSS. If I go beyond that point I am threatening the integrity of the investigation. Meaning if I go and beat the crap out of a parent for abusing a child or go to the press and report it that the whole case could be thrown out and the abuser would get away with it.
