"Snacks on Snacks": There's a Foul Owl on the Prowl!!!

For all of you youngsters who have never heard Boomer & Travis sing this catchy tune in the 1967 movie "In the Heat of the Night", check it out on YouTube asap (I'm not sure what the policy is towards me posting a direct link here -- add it to this post if you know it's ok with BSD). Trust me, you will find yourself singing along: "If you hear him hoot, scoot... if you pass his tree, flee... if you catch his eye, fly... don't wait to say goodbye. He's got a yen for a purty little hen... foul owl on the prowl. He's hungry for a chick, so get home quick... foul owl on the prowl!"

What does a hungry-for-another-win lioness feed to an unsuspecting foul owl on the prowl to lure him into her den?

A Good, Old-Fashioned Chicken Pot Pie... a stew just perfect for a chilly, Fall, Beaver Stadium Tailgate!!!

My recipe isn't exactly like my grandma used to make. It's a spin-off of one of my favorite places to eat in "Old City" Philadelphia: The City Tavern Restaurant. It's chocked full of chicken and vegetables (onions, celery, carrots, potatoes and peas), all "stewed" together in a sherry cream sauce, then, topped and baked with a puff pastry crust. If you have the fortitude to pass on the cheese steaks the next time you're in Philadelphia, take a trip back in time, to 1773, when John Adams proclaimed this to be "the most genteel tavern in America"! By the way, they serve all Colonial fare, including Washington, Adams, Jefferson and Franklin's favorite ales!!!

In the event you can't pass on those cheese steaks, give my spin on Pat's King of Steaks cheese steak sandwich a whirl. This is not Steak-Ums folks! This is real-deal, thinly-sliced rib-eye, piled high on Philly's famous Amoroso rolls. Eating one requires proper sandwich etiquette too, known as: "The Philadelphia Lean". Because the juices will be dripping from your sandwich when it is served to you: Instead of sitting down and bringing the sandwich up to your mouth... stand up, lean forward a take a big, juicy, cheesy, beefy bite! Joefromboalsburg likes his with provolone...

... but at Pat's, 'Whiz' is considered the topping of choice, and, that's jesse.'s favorite too!

Did you know that eating a cheese steak at Midnight is a time-honored Philly tradition?

Too tired to make cheese steaks at Midnight? These hearty snacks (pictured below) are a commendable substitution. After last weeks game I served them around 11:30PM. A few good men sitting in front of 3 TV's in joefromboalsburg's mancave inhaled forty of them before Midnight, so I figured I'd include them in this weeks list of tailgate ideas for you: Apple Butter, Caramelized Onion, Filet of Beef & Horseradish Cheddar Crostini!

Do I feel another win coming on this week? You betcha!

... All you little birds better lock up tight... 'cause there's a foul owl on the prowl tonight. Hey, little lark, get outta the dark... foul owl on the prowl. Hey little jay, stay out of his way... foul owl on the prowl. You just might be the quail he'll tail... foul owl on the prowl. You just might be the swallow he'll follow... foul on the prowl!"
