BSD MVP Week Six: Allen Robinson

Pat Lovell-USA TODAY Sports

An easy selection for MVP honors from a game without many standout performers.

How bad would Penn State's first ever loss to Indiana have been without their superstar receiver? Allen Robinson set season-highs in yards (183 total) and receptions (12) to go with his two touchdowns. His ability to make plays after the catch saved multiple drives from stalling and his second TD catch through end zone traffic gave the Nittany Lions a lead, one the defense would soon relinquish for good.

All negatives from Saturday aside, let's talk about what we have here. There's a tendency by fanbases, of any team, to take an exceptional talent like Penn State's no. 8 for granted. I don't think that's a problem for a program that hasn't exactly been spoiled with NFL-caliber talent on the flanks. Robinson is unlike any pass-catcher seen in State College during my lifetime (read: post-Bobby Engram) and will likely go down as the greatest receiver in school history, both statistically and anecdotally. Even in defeat, it's hard not to appreciate players like A-Rob.

Also Considered

Christian Hackenberg: Had one of those games where it didn't seem like he played particularly well despite his stat line: 30/55 for 340 yds and 3 TDs. Missed some key throws, probably should have been picked off a couple of times and all in all never quite found his rhythm. Perhaps playcalling has something to do with it, perhaps not. We know this: Bill O'Brien really trusts his freshman QB. Maybe to a fault.

You, the loyal fan: You watched most of this game and you deserve something for that. Unfortunately, A-Rob just pipped you for this award, as you had no receiving yards and no touchdowns. But for your unwavering support, BSD would like to offer you this special, non-refundable gift.
