Canisius Could Take Place Of Army In Penn State Hockey Opener

Rick Stewart

Apparently this wasn't as resolved as we thought it was.

This morning, Buffalo Business First reported that Canisius may be lined up to take the place of Army in this Friday's home opener for the Penn State men's hockey team if the continued government shutdown keeps Army from being able to make the trip to State College. As of now, no change to the schedule has been announced by the Penn State athletic department.

A Canisius rep told BBF that there have been preliminary discussions between the schools and that a decision would have to be made by Wednesday for them to come to State College for Friday night. Canisius also has a game on Saturday night back in Buffalo against Niagara. More on the logistical problems that may come of this can be found on the Thank You Terry blog.

While football games which included the service academies went on as scheduled last week, Air Force has already announced changes for this week, but this time with regards to their hockey program. They were supposed to take on New Brunswick in an exhibition last night, but that game was called off.

Penn State and Canisius to share a tie in Terry Pegula, the backer of the Penn State Division I program and of the soon-to-come HarborCenter which will house the latter's home games as well as those of the Buffalo Junior Sabres. It's not unthinkable that Mr. Pegula called in a favor to the Griffs in case the opening game in the arena to which his name is attached was not going to go off without a hitch.
