Let me start by saying that being at the game was amazing. Probably the best PSU football experience I've been to live since MSU 2005 to clinch the Big Ten (I only get to a game or 2 a year; just 1 this year). It was made even better by being there with my dad and both of my sons. This was the 7 year old's 2nd game; the other was 409. Maybe I should get season tix with him for next year...It's been said here earlier - under Paterno, we won games we should have won, lost games we should have won, lost games we should have lost, but didn't really win many games where we realistically had no shot. Biggest upset by PSU in 45+ years, or my entire lifetime.
That said, where were the PSU fans? I saw the small contingent at the east side of the south end zone (I assume this was "the visitors section), and Aqua Velva Man was near the tunnel. We were in HH (upper deck, next to the press box) and other than 2 wonderfully vivacious young ladies from State College that were above us in HH, I could see and hear NO other PSU fans. The pre-game pep rally, usually SRO, had empty seats (although it was in a large ballroom, and a number of people stood) - attendance there was way lower than usual. No fan criticism implied here - I know it was a long way from State College, and it was Thanksgiving weekend, and it was cold. Were there more of us there that I just couldn't see?
The Wisky fans I encountered were really friendly. Glad I didn't meet up with any of the cretin-types. They were VERY vocal in discussions about their dislike of Bielema, and post game, most were very quiet - the ones that commented to me were almost universally gushing with compliments about Hackenberg. We had a pretty knowledgeable group of 4 behind us, joking with us about Stave's foibles as well as Smith repeated false starts, but the old guy in the group made me laugh when he told me that he "there when Lou Paterno got his leg broke".
If you have the chance to go to a game here, do it once already. "Jump Around" at the end of the 3rd quarter is surprisingly awesome, and stay for the 5th Quarter band show after the game. Band gone ham. Tons of fun, especially if you are basking in the postgame glow.
The offense was awesome, but good gravy, the pass rush? Insane. They gashed us some with the run, with all of the beef they have up front, but wow, did we bring some pass rush against that beef.
