Ok, I understand that O'Brien gets to pick his staff, and Butler is his guy, but I have been giving BOB a lot of credit for retaining the two best position coaches from the Paterno era, so lets be frank
We got consistently gashed in the flats because there were never any bodies in the flats which means:
1. They weren't there on purpose (by design);
2. They weren't there because of lapse or mistake.
I have a hard time believing they weren't there because of lapse or mistake that many times. So, they weren't there by design.
RESPONSIBLE PARTY: DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR (BUTLER)
SOLUTION: DIAL BACK THE BLITZING, KEEP THE SAM AND WILL AT HOME, INCREASE FRONT LINE PRESSURE WITH 4 DOWN LINEMEN.
I am hearing that there was conflict between Vanderlinden, Butler and O'Brien. Here is what I guess the conversation was like:
VANDERLINDEN: I think we should dial back the blitzing.
BUTLER(Jumps up and down-gets pulled back by Fitzgerald): What do you know? You've only coached Pozluszny, Bowman, Lee, Connor, Wake, Hullstache, Mauti, Hodges, etc. etc. I coached at
DUKE! Midwestern State! Bill! He's picking on me again!
VANDERLINDEN: I get it - he's your guy. I am going to go coach linebackers at Alabama, Auburn, or some other program.
BUTLER: FINE! Psssh. Its not like we're known for linebackers or anything.
OBRIEN: Dude. Just shut up.
