Short Basketball Recruiting Notes

I live in the Philadelphia area and was able to see Derrick Jones (sophomore, Archbishop Carroll HS) play in person, so I figured I'd give my short evaluation since he's on PC's list for 2015. First of all, it's worth noting that Jones was the top-rated freshman coming out of 8th grade. He's very long, and his skinny frame probably makes his limbs look longer than they really are. I was very encouraged to see him crash the offensive boards throughout the game; even after the result had been decided early in the fourth quarter. He also recorded at least 5 or 6 blocks, mostly by coming over to help defend in the paint. Unfortunately, he seemed rather disinterested for most of the game - probably since the quality of his opponent was so far beneath him (the kid guarding him most of the game was a couple inches shorter and couldn't match up with his athleticism). He could've easily poured in 30+, but still scored 16. As with most 15-16 year olds, he has a lot of bulking up to do but that should come with time. I'd love to get to see him play against a higher quality of opponent to see what he does against someone who can play at his level for a full four quarters.

Also, just a small note to take for what it's worth - I spoke with a high school coach in the area who mentioned that Shep Garner's (Roman Catholic HS, 2014) recruitment has cooled off a lot from what it was earlier in the season and last summer. Said he thinks that at this point, PSU has a realistic shot of landing him - probably the best chance that they've had since their recruitment of him started.
