After today's two commitments, PSU is up to a total of 9 pledged for their 2014 class. As Nick indicated in his first Recruiting Roundup, Penn State likely only has 10 spots available for this recruiting cycle (pending further transfers). This leaves PSU with only one scholarship remaining which could be utilized to fill several different needs. My question is- what direction do you expect the staff to go in with this last remaining schollie? Will it be:
1) Saved for an elite level prospect (Peppers, Eluemunor, Holley)
2) Saved for a specific position of need:
2a) Quarterback (O'Connor)
2b) D-line (Walker)
2c) O-line (??)
3) Granted to any recruit offered outside of the currently loaded positions (read: anything but RB, WR, DB)
4) Granted to the next recruit willing to commit regardless of position
I think a genuine fear that is some kid will "commit" knowing this is his last chance to grab a spot, but will keep all recruiting channels open. Then he could end up committing elsewhere later in the process and PSU could have missed out on an opportunity to court some of these other highly interested prospects.
My predictions- I thought Vincent Jr. (CB) was a likely commit but now I'd guess BOB tells him their DB quota is full. O'Connor is the next to pledge and, for the time, completes the class. Later, someone backs out on their commitment and the staff fills their scholarship with an off-the-radar lineman.
