LBU, LBwho?

Last year I wrote a several fan shots on the NFL value of players from various universities. PSU has been very good at graduating productive NFL players compared to other universities. I followed that by showing we have a more solid claim to RBU than one would have expected, though America’s Brightest Orange or the U have the best claim to that title. Fortunately, all those posts were written in a drunken stupor while drinking good beer. Unfortunately this post is written in a drunken stupor while drinking cheap beer (Tecate Las Bitches).

Some time afterwards I wrote a fan shot asking for LBU contenders and was presented with the U, tOhioSucksUniversity, USC and PSU. And oh boy do I have some data that surprised me. I decided to look at the value of the Top 30 LBs in the NFL from each university and add up their total value. (Now, this can get a bit tricky as in the early days, many players played more than one position which would increase their value.)

University Total Value Avg. Median

USC 1851 61.70 51

PSU 1400 46.67 41

tOSU 1256 41.87 35

daU 1313 43.77 33

Holy Jebus, USC has produce quite a bit of LB talent value in the NFL, however, like I stated there are a lot of old players from multiple positions. USC, being a historical power has a lot of players at LB that have also played at other positions. So how many players does each university have at LB that were active in 2012.

University Players

Meami 10

PSU 7

tOSU 7

USC 6

Well now, for the first time in history, Miami is the head of the class and this ain’t about giving head.

Further more, how many players does each university have at LB that are in each skools Top 30?

University Players

Miami 8

PSU 6

tOSU 2

USC 2

What we see here is a clear distinction between PSU/Miami and USC/tOSU.

Thoughts

Given the data at hand, it is really quite comical that tOSU wants to place themselves in the LBU discussion. As for Miami, they are significantly helped by Ray Lewis and Ted Hendricks and their amount of current players in the NFL. As for USC, it is undeniable that they have produced a lot of NFL talent however most of the value was produced in the early days of the NFL but they are still ahead of us despite what our egos want to believe.

So, what do you guys and gals say? Are we truly LBU? Does USC have the right to the title? Can el U take it away? All I know is that I am una cerveza from finishing my 12 pack. As always, I post, you discuss….
